I really liked "AMEN" it was a funny show. And I liked Thelma and Reuben the most. To me they had a great chemistry... When he took her to her high school reunion, he showed how much he liked her even if he kept on denying it to himself... and finally he had to admit that he loved her just as she loved him... that just shows people that beauty is within the inner person and not just physical like everyone thinks.
Amen jumped the shark (btw: the "shark" had a excellent "feast") when Thelma married Reuben. Why would Reuben wanted to marry whiny Thelma?
I absolutely adored this show and cant understand why there are so many negative comments posted. I used to watch this show as a kid and continue to watch now that it is back on tv. I love the interaction between Thelma and Reuben because it shows that looks arent the only thing that matters when looking love. Now Anna Marie Horsford is definately not ugly at all and the chemistry may have been unbelieveable at times between her and the pastor but I still loved the show. The show was good in that it was comical and implemented the reinforcement of religion every once in a while. I believe all the characters were great and deserve their praise for a job well done. Afterall, if it wasnt good, you wouldnt have been able to critacize as you have, showing that you must have watched a couple or most of the episodes.
I actually like the episodes when Thelma joins the army. All she ever did was whine and complain, she should have stayed there.
Was there anything she could do right?
The actress was much better on The Wayans Bros. show.

Definitely when The Reverend & Thelma got married. The chemistry seemed forced. They were as mitched matched as two left shows.
Growing up Catholic, I used to think that Amelia and Cassietta--with their lack of male companionship and constantly being called "Sister" by each other and the rest of the cast--were some kind of nuns.
Folks acting crazy at church...nothing new...but the show outside of Sherman H. was the burning question of when and IF the Rev actually wanted to be with Thelma. I was young then so I need to watch in now to fully understand the real concept of the show.
This was the worst show Sherman Hemsley played in because it wasn't as funny as his previous show, "The Jeffersons." Thelma was a whiny spinster who always had some of the bougiest friends when she didn't have no class herself. The Rev was so high and mighty to the point it got unbearable. The Hetebrink sisters were pains in the ass who seemed to never find a date. Rolly and Chris were the saving graces of the show. Clarence boasted about his looks too much. Lorenzo, Inga, and Leola (Rolly's wife) had no significance to this travesty of a show. Wasn't all that religious to begin with.
A poster below wonders why Thelma liked the Reverend. The question should be reversed. What in hell did the Reverend see in THAT butt ugly broad who, IMHO, is only one step above Shirley Hemphill in the looks department? Thelma looks like a man in drag. Not to mention that absolutely GRATING VOICE. He could have done SO MUCH better.
The show jumped big time when Thelma married the Reverend. It was a little unbelievable that the Rev would even date Thelma, let alone marry her. They had NO chemistry. I agree with another poster (and was secretly thrilled that someone else noticed this too!) in that Roz Ryan always found a way to sing. ALWAYS! Enough Roz, we get it. You like to sing, you think you sound awesome now, please, shut it!
Anna Maria Horsface was the weak link of the cast. Other than that, it was a warm, G-rated thirty minutes that provided a good laugh or two every now and then.
This was a funny show but the pastor was batter not being married to Thelma she was too much of a whiner, but she was a big woman. But all in all I loved her and the show
