Man I loved that show. I recorded the theme song also with my tape recorder and played it while I rode my bike pretend ing I was driving the cool Firebird they drove around on. I also remember the curly goovy boy had a sled he drove and they called it the gross machine... Man I wish this would show up on DVD somewhere...
Our 4th grade class went on a field trip to CBS Studios by the Farmer's Market. We were lured to the studio by the promise of a tour, but all we saw was the news set (Jess Marlow, anyone?), and the only reason we saw that was it was on the way to a screening room. We were actually there as a focus group for a hot new dramedy called "California Fever". We watched the pilot, almost two hours long, with a red button in our left hands and a green button in our right. Whenever we saw something we liked we were instructed to press the green, something bad press the red. I'm confessing this as proof that TV in the seventies was pitched at nine year olds, and even though some crap like "CHiPs" turned out to be classic in spite of itself, most TV sucked ass because little kids like me were dictating what the world would be watching. I wore out that green button. Rex Smith and his pirate radio station jammed, baby! There was plenty of singing and dancing, too.
As I recall Jimmy had a band that performed in the garage and they were gearing up for a competition and played two songs, which I recorded by holding my grandfathers tape recorder up to the TVas I did with the theme song(s). One song went, "Nah nah nah nah, are you satisfied?. Nah nah nah, I wanna know yeah." The satisfied line was sung by the girl in the band and the last one by Jimmy but I don't remember the name of any of them. When I was a kid I thought Jimmy McNichol was so hot (lol). Thank goodness his sister was also in the biz. I wanted to get a poster of him but was afraid to ask my mother because she might suspect that I was gay so I chose a poster of Jimmy & Kristy together (thanks Kristy). I also remember the wacky sidekick was Jimmy Olsen from the Superman movies.
When Rex Smith showed up to plug Jimmy's 10 watt radio station, while fighting off the FCC. Sure did 'take my breath away".
I just wanted to add what I recall was the opening theme song (and vote that the show never jumped). My friend and I used to sing it on the way to the bus stop. We loved Jimmy McNichol. Here it is: Maybe it's the ocean, maybe it's the air. Maybe it's the sunshine that gets in my hair. Maybe it's the ladies, or the clothes that they wear. I don't know. I don't care. I just got to be there... California, here I am, and I love you. (I got the fever for you). California, sunny skies, I got the friends that I need, I got some livin' to do, and looooove you!
just some more info for you regarding the tv show 'california fever' (not dreaming). it did star jimmy mcnichol and lorenzo lamas played 'rick' the owner of a new age health food stand located at the kids fav hangout. there was also a 'wacky' curly haired fellow and their catch phrase was 'let's jam!'. they also said 'bro' alot. i loved the show.
Correct me if Im wrong, but didnt Lorenzo Lamas play one of the characters on this show? Its run was probably too short to have jumped the shark.
