has it been long enough since the death of lady di that we can remember how hilarious the sketch was where dana carvey as prince charles sang that brit pop style song all about how he wishes he could just decapitate his ex wife like english royalty of the old days with the guest verse done by a clutch cargo animation of a painting of henry the 8th followed by a beatles animation style trip scene talking about living in "no alimony land"? i left out my name just in case it hasn't been. but that's probably my fondest memory of this show that hasn't been mentioned yet. oh yeah and the two racist guys that just sat and whittled on the porch. "what you whittlin' there?" "hatred stick to beat the queers" "how about the henderson queer? he's a good'n" "yup" i was in middle school when this aired there was probably even more clever stuff i didn't catch. also does anybody else remember the commercials for it where dana carvey thanked tim allen for his awesome time slot in the garth voice? but then they had to change it to his regular voice. that was lame. but i didn't understand ownership rights and copyright law and all that back then.
If someone is reading----Get this thing on DVD!!! This short lived phenomenon would sell a million copies with its cult following. Could you image the outfall this series would've had if it aired during the Bush Admin's tenure!!!! Such an outlandish show, but def. worth watching. I want my reruns. Pat Buchanan's illegal immigrant heart eating, food network after dark, Clinton's nipple suckling.
For the record these two series need DVD compilations:
Dana Carvey Show
Gerhardt Reinke's America

It went too far with the breast-feeding of the dogs; that was over-the-top vulgar. I appreciated all the other skits to varying degrees as far as I can remember.
Pepsi owned both Taco Bell and Pizza Hut back then. Also, it was the greatest collection of writers ever assembled for a single undertaking...Writing credits (if there's no parenthesis, they should be obvious geniuses) Steve Carell , Dana Carvey, Dave Chappelle, Louis C.K. (SNL writer, new show on HBO "Lucky Louie"), Stephen Colbert, Spike Feresten (Seinfeld, Simpsons, Space Ghost), Jon Glaser (Conan, Daily Show, Upright Citizens Brigade, Aqua Teen Hunger Force), Charlie Kaufman, Robert Smigel (SNL, Space Ghost, Conan (Triumph the insult dog), Crank Yankers), Dino Stamatopoulos (Conan, Letterman, Mr. Show, TV Funhouse, Mad TV), Michael Stoyanov (Conan, Mr. Show, Mad TV)
This show NEVER jumped shark. It was only canned because it lightly made fun of its sponsors at the beginning of each show. The big companies were too sensitive. If anything, Carvey's beginning sketches made me think about his sponsors MORE.
Jumped when "The Szechuan Dynasty" presented "The Dana Carvey Show." Just kidding, but that did seem to signal the end to this great show, not having the Pepsi sponsership. But we all now know the incredible writer/performer credits--I think the best you'll ever see (Colbert, Chappelle, Carrell, Smigel, Kaufman, etc). A cool sidenote: Stephen Colbert is the voice of C-SPAN as he introduces maybe the best sketch--a great Howard Stern impersonator (believe me, I've listened to Howard for 5 years) roasting Bill Clinton (with Bill just LOVING every raunchy joke, to the dismay of Hillary). The dinner is the same event in which the real Colbert famously just skewered president George W. Bush.
The show was actually on Tuesday nights (I worked for the show--it was my first job and I was crushed when it was cancelled). The best skit that never aired on the show was Ted Koppel pre-taping possible news stories that might air while he would be on vacation (Gerald Ford was ravaged my bears today...and I am gay). Dana did a version of this skit when he hosted SNL the following season.
It never had a chance, because it was not on long enough! Even if it made it through a whole season, it would not have jumped! It was too funny, and I still miss it all these years later...I miss your comedy show, Dana!
PEPSI - "Is chock full of vitamins/Chock full of minerals/High in fiber and electrolytes! - Pepsi, repels mosquitos/Will lower the crime rate/Brings old people back to life! - If you drink a Pepsi you can understand/What elephants say to other elephants - If you're in a cab and you need some change/You can ask Pepsi and he'll loan you a dollar - Cuz Pepsi likes everyone! - Except for his father/They've had a bad relationship/But nobody's perfect - Before you judge Pepsi, take a look in the mirror/When was the last time you called your dad? - Now, here's our host of the show..... Dana Carvey!"
This show wasn't as great as everyone here is making it out to be, although it WAS hilarious at times. A favorite skit of mine (which has since been ripped off) was when Dana and some other guy went to a drive-thru and paid and then sped off laughing hysterically. The same skit had them shoveling an old ladies snowed in drive way, and when she came out to pay them they had already made their escape. I found this to be genius. The Germans who say nice things got old after a while, even for the short time it was on...Does anyone remember Martin Short's short lived show from around the same time? There was a great skit when he was an old woman and described everything as "puddin'". Pure genius.
I'm another person who totally forgot about this show until I saw it listed here, but I have to agree that it SO NEVER JUMPED. As mentioned, the 'Wizard of Oz' bit, with the "cut" character who needed the wizard to give him and ass, was brilliant. I also remember the skit with "Bob Dole" pumping iron to 'Rocky'-style music during the 1996 election. My favorite bit was "Germans who say nice things." I'm not really sure why I find it so funny but, to this day, thinking about it cracks me up. This show was pure, hilarious, surreal genius. Didn't it only last half a season or something? Stupid ABC.
Never jumped. But it will not be seen for a generation because of the trippy Charles-wants-to-behead-Diana sequence
This show never jumped. Ranks up there with the most creative TV comedy concepts of all time. How about the fake Oscar ceremony with Gregory Peck presenting Oscars for best documentary, etc.? Or Carvey and sidekick shoveling the old lady's sidewalk and then peeling out in their AMC Pacer before Grandma has a chance to pay them? Absolutely priceless.
