The whole "Hurricane Andrew" thing where the tree fell on the house, almost killing them (hello, isn't this a *comedy?*).
Dave's World used to be one of those numerous family sitcoms that were just okay and just kind of slid by for more years than I realized. When it was cancelled I didn't even notice. The very attractive wife played by Delane Matthews and Dave's secretary, Maya(?) were reasons enough to keep me coming back to watch but not enough to engage my higher brain functions and actually care about the show. Yes, Dear and Everybody Loves Raymond are both lesser shows that are following the same path without the pleasant wife character. To be honest, I'd rather check out reruns of Dave's World than watch 90% of the current sitcoms.
Actually, Dave Barry has been married THREE times - Beth was his second wife. And I love the real Dave, but thought the show turned him into Erma Bombeck on steroids.
GOD! I only recently found out that Dave has been married two times! I thought Sophie (his toddler daughter) was from his 1st wife. Actually, although I saw the words "my wife Beth ate a whole strawberry pie" or "to my wife Michelle who makes me endlessly happy and takes me to basketball games" in his books, I kind of WELDED the two into one person. Oh well.
An episode from the second season stole a scene word for word from an episode of the Brady Bunch. In it, Dave/Mike Brady was teaching his son not to open the door for strangers, and decided to 'demonstrate'. He walked outside and started doing a fake voice of a 'stranger', at which point the son (for unexplained reasons in both shows) walked away and another character (in this case, his wife - originally it was Alice) approached the door, confused. I gotta say, at this point I was so appalled I switched the channel and never watched another episode ever again. It wasn't so much the act of plagiarism that put me off so much - but to plagiarize THE BRADY BUNCH??????
This was a fun show that first introduced us to the guy who played Puddy on Seinfeld and the Tick. It did end just in time because if it went one more season Delane Matthews's shorts were going to be so incredibly skimpy it was going to be an adult version of "Here's the Beaver"! She was cute, the legs livened up any dull episode.
On this show, the father got no love at all. Hard to believe this show was supposed to be based on Dave Barry's columns. Barry himself said that if they were to make a show out of his columns, "each episode would be 5 minutes and end with an exploding toilet". Quite frankly, I would rather watch that than this crapola sitcom. Harry Anderson deserved better.
Every so often a show comes along that makes you remember to turn on the TV. That was Dave's World. Easy going concept, clever dialogue, realistic touches, like the grazing style of their dinners and the missing tile on the counter...I know these people! And Delane Matthews, where has she gone? Winner: Most telegenic and believable TV wife, great legs. Trivia: j.c. Wendel's mom is the dizzy landlady on Third Rock.
I don't think it ever jumped. This was my favorite show, I loved all the people, the house and furniture. Bring it back.
This show jumped when Dave Barry (the real one) got a divorce from his first wife. Before that the show was hilarious, and it really seemed like it could be almost sort of based on Dave Barry's real life (if he had 2 kids and 1 dog instead of vice versa.) But after his divorce, they couldn't really pretend that anymore (it's not as if the tv characters are going to follow suit) and the show just turned into a typical sappy stupid family show.
This was a great show from its premiere in 1993 til its departure in 1997. The series had shadoe stevens who is very funny and such lovely actresses like j.c. wendel as mia and delane matthews as beth barry. the reason it died was when cbs put in on friday night were it died against the painfully annoying family matters. it was a stupid move just like when abc put coach on saturday night
Hi- my name is jc wendel- I played MIA on daves world, & wanted to respond to some of the comments I just read about our little show- and I might add...one of the best experiences of my professional life. I agree- with most of what folks wrote- our show got shafted because of politics happening at CBS when we were in our 4rth year- let me go on record as saying that harry anderson, delayne mathews shadoe stevens ,meshach taylor and Partick warburton were some of the coolest funniest, most laid back people you would ever want to work with. Our directors were never that pressured-jaimie widdoes from Animal House, and Charles' In Charge... was one of our exec producers, and for the first 2 years our constant director- after that we had guest directors come in- one of them was Henry Winkler and hers what embodies the cool factor of our littel show that no one saw--when he took his curtain call as director... (henry).. - (the barry's supposedly had a working jukebox under the window of their living room)..well; Henry came out and b4 bowing to the audience & us- went over & banged the juke and it started playing -guess what- it was THE COOLEST MOMENT OF MY CAREER TO DATE THERE WAS THE FONZ WHO HAD JUST DIRECTED ME ALL WEEK- BANGING ON A FRICKIN JUKE BOX ON OUR SET!! there were other terrific delicious, delirious , incredibly FUN moments on that set I will never forget as well..Soooooo: when you guys rate our little show-remember 2 things- only the first year was traced from the incredible mr. barry's life- the rest was fabricated by very talented writers AND: that the original shark jumper was allowed to direct some of our little show- and the thrill of those memories live on with some of us..*a show is a family, and when families get trashed they tend to stick together- so I'd wager that my compatriots out there probably feel exactly the same way as i..thank you- jc wendel-august 23rd- 2004- studio city ca, PS: check out my new website if interested of course; : www.jcwendel.net (waa-haa)!!
