I wished that Ed would have showed that selfish Carol that it wasn't alright to jerk him around for all those years while he worshipped her. Frankie was a better match. She was kind, adorable and treated Ed with respect, but of course it was more important to show that the nerd can get the golden goddess eye candy trophy woman. Nice girls finish last. When Ed tried to convince Frankie that it was over with Carol and she said "It will never be over", it broke my heart. I expected him to go after her after the dream became reality and the sex was disappointing, but he never did. Boo hoo.
This show had some of the best writing ever to appear on television.

The stories were quite imaginative and always held my attention.

It's too bad that the somewhat crummy shows go right to disc but the really good shows like "Ed" are wrapped inside legal wrangling.

Still I wait....
Letterman is not doing anything right now. Someboday ask him to get on the phone, and call whoever he needs to to get Ed on DVD. I WANT ED ON DVD!!! NOW!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Never jumped. And can this show pleas be on DVD or reruns or something? I need my Stuckeyville fix!
Wasn't he the one that found "the love of his life"every 12 minutes?
I LOVED Ed, it was one of my favorite shows! Thomas Cavanagh is so funny, I loved him in the (very) short lived "Love Monkey" as well. Anyway, I wish someone would pick up "Ed" for reruns, I miss the quirky comedy.
I had previously posted that Ed never jumped, but now - two years after it signed off - I still think about that series finale and decided that it actually jumped with that episode. Ed was soooo in love with Carol, and was such a romantic that there is just no way (even in the surrealistic land of Stuckeyville) that he would have even contemplated that scary circus wedding, and he would not have gotten married at the bowling alley either. Ed and Carol would've gotten married at the community church that was featued in a previous episode or at the duck pond. The writers had it wrong when Carol let Ed plan the wedding, Ed would've tried to give Carol her fairytale wedding. The party might have been at the Stuckeybowl, but just as easily could have been at the Smiling Goat where they seemed to hang out even more often. Still one of the best shows of all time, though. Apparently the ratings on TBS sucked because it disappeared pretty fast. A darned shame.
They went on for several more episodes, but it was like they were just phoning it in until they could get to the big wedding finale. It's a shame, because they had a really good cast, with the exception of Michael Ian Black (that guy sucks).
I did not watch ED regularly when it was on prime time. However, I did watch it from the pilot until the last episode on WTBS. ED was basically a poor man's NORTHERN EXPOSURE, which is one of my all-time favorites. The main character is ED STEVENS, combining my 2 favorite characters on NX. ED tried too hard to be quirky, IMHO. ED was a decent enough show until Ed and Carol did it. The show crossed over into goofiness from that point.
This show jumped the shark with the arrival of Sabrina Lloyd (Frankie) who was basically Natalie from Sports Night. She sucked.
Ed never really "jumped the shark" it was a great show. However, I did not like the episode about the lucid dream. Mainly, because I do not want Ed with any one but Carol and that whole episode focused on Ed's journey to discovering his feelings for Frankie!!
When Ed didn't choose Franky. Or when Warren slept with Carol Vissies sister. Or when Ed sold the bowling alley. or when Mikes dad turns out to be Burt Reynolds. SICK.
When they got rid of Frankie. A sub-shark was getting Ed and Carol together but the show could have survived that jump if they hadn't dumped Frankie like a hot brick. When Frankie arrived she injected a spark and energy that the show had been lacking. She had great chemistry with Ed and showed us that there was an alternative to Carol. But they steamrollered her out of the way to pair Ed and Carol off. Then in the next episode... she's gone. One mention of her name and a shrug from Ed and that's it. That told the audience they could forget about the quirky, offbeat show they enjoyed because now it was ALL about Ed and Carol and nothing would be allowed to get in the way. The way Ed shrugged off Frankie like she was nothing destroyed his nice guy image and I really didn't like him much after that. The only way to save the show once Ed and Carol were together was to keep Frankie in there to mix it up. She would have made Ed feel guilty for dumping her and make Carol insecure by staying around and working with Ed. Instead, the rest of season 4 was one long turgid, predictable trek to the wedding (which tells us that the writers knew full well the shark had been jumped because there was surely no better way of saying "The End").
Ed definitely ranks in my top 10 best shows of all time. Thanks NBC for keeping it on the air 4 years despite bad ratings. I wish Ed had been given a chance in a later time-slot when more adults watch t.v. The writers, actors, and producers pulled off the rare feat of blending comedy, romance, and small-town sentimentalism well. I had predicted Ed would jump when he and Carol got together but even the last season was pretty good. In the world of television it seems that being good means being too good to be true.
In its first season, Ed was a smartly written, acted, and directed show where the quirky characters in Stuckyville were a superb support to Ed's homecoming to woo his high school crush. It had wonderful moments throughout season one with cool episodes that were immersed in the framework of Ed's legal practice. Then Season Two started to get lame and by Season Three it was just a shadow of its former self. Very sad.
