Can anyone explain why P&G ditched Paul Taubman's brilliant opening theme? There was nothing as chilling or as immediately recognizable as that piano intro..followed by the announcer's classic 'The EEEEdge of Night'. The second theme pales by comparison.
Great show. Sorry to see it end like it did. I love the previous post as to the small tribute to Henry Slesar. He was fantastic as the headwriter. That man could plot. Sad day when his last episode ended. Would have enjoyed seeing him write the series finale. Also, I am looking for the episode(s) where Eliot Dorn is murdered. I had it at one time and it was destroyed due to flooding of my home. My email address is: natural61866@yahoo.com. Thanks.
Kelly mcgrath had such an Evil Looking clown Puppet that Molly Sherwood would use to Impale Elliot Dorn in the Back while Holding dagger, very bloddy,it was such a Classic plot,During 80/81...
I really miss The Edge Of Night so much.I think that Lee Sheldon did a fabulious job. I always thought that Dennis Parker who played the police chief was a excellent actor. It is a terrible tragedy that he committed suicide. Does anyone know where I could see the episodes of Louis Vandyne Jerry Zaks. This in my opinion was the best episodes ever of the Edge Of Night. I commend Lee Sheldon with his great insight and terrific storyline. Please,CBS,NBC,ABC,USA NETWORK,SOAPNET,PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE BRING THE EDGE OF NIGHT BACK...PLEASE. If anyone knows where I can get or see over the internet the Jerry Zaks Louis Vandyne episodes, please email me at michaelthebner@bellsouth.net. Thanks.
BEYOND MONTICELLO...
I will never forget Henry Slesar's facial expression when I asked him what he would have done with EDGE'S final show if he had been given the opportunity to write/co-write the final episode. He said that he would have "brought back old friends and unexpected enemies." Henry was unsure, in that moment anyway, of who he had in mind.
He absolutely loved writing for Sharon Gabet who portrayed "Charlotte/Raven" so well. Some of his other favorites were his "wakiest" creations: Denise Norwood/Cavanaugh, Nola Patterson/Madison, Molly Sherwood, and Nora Fulton. He also had a profound fondness for the character April Scott. Terry Davis was perfect for this role and he knew it.
I will always remember Henry's humble approach of his replacement with Mr. Sheldon. Henry told me, "Better to have been ordered off the bridge before the ship went down." In any case he remains the champ as the only head writer to remain as head of the helm for over 10 years!
In any case, getting back to my initial rant, I STILL resent the fact that P&G would not consider having Henry contribute to the final storyline. I do know that he would not have ended with an outrageous plot. He would have given us a the twist (with integrity) that Henry Sleasr is and will always be known for. Just for the record, in my opinion,P&G should have given the ax to Exec. Producer, Erwin/Nick Nicholson (nothing personal Nick, may you RIP) and Producer Jackie Haber before letting Henry go. Henry was such a loyal human being. He never became bitter. He was GRATEFUL for the opportunity he was given all those yeats to work with such wonderful, creative people. Henry, God bless... you are loved and missed!!!

I watch this show from day one and my favorite was the Teal Ames and John Larkin version. It had it all action suspense and family.
Besdides switching over to ABC and making cahos for it's Affiliate also Edge Jump The Shark when Laurie Ann Karr Mike and Nancy's Daughter was sent to Sanitarium at the end of 1977.Of the six different Actresses that played Laurie.Emily Prager is My favorite when she was with Edge between 1968-1972 the same time when our Brave NASA Astronauts were setting foot on the Moon and I especially like Emily long Brunette Hair and she did one excelent job and I hope youtube.com will have Edge Of Night Episodes when Prager played Laurie.
Great show! Sadly, I missed most of
it, due to the "bad press" given to most soaps at the time I did catch the part where Mike Karr goes blind...and was amzaed that he stayed blined for about 2 years. (Very realistic for a soap!)
I also didn't watch "Edge" because it was deemed "the most masculine of the soaps" by one fan magazine....and I was a real patsy for the media in those days. (My dad wanted to teach me to drive, but I said "it's not feminine"....boy, was I brainwashed!!!!)
I feel I....and so many others...have missed a wonderful, exciting story. I wish that "The Edge of Night" would 1)Reurn to TV 2) Have a DVD set made of the entire series and/or 3)Have a movie/stage show version made of the set.
I wathed, and remain a fan of other quality TV...."Dark Shadows" and "Alien Nation" being my favourite fantasty and sci-fi shows, respectively. "The Edge of Night" HAS to be the best "modern life" soap opera/daytime drama ever. I want to see it! I'm sure lots of other people will too! Please, copyright owners, give it a chance....a one-shot TV special of the Edge's characters, as they would be today......or in the 90s, etc.
The Edge of Night is too great a show to just be a legend. Audiences appreciate quality....especially today! Bring it back, please!!!!!!

I first saw Edge in 1969 when I was a little. I remember coming home from school and my mom was finishing watching the "Secret Storm" and I would watch Edge with her. My favorite storyline was the Jonah Lockwood/Keith Whitney storyline.I still remember that well to this day. I wish there were a tape or some footage of Edge during that storyline. One idea I had was that if the Edge before they left the air in 1984 if the writers could somehow would incorporate that the character of Keith Whitney only to discover that he was still very much alive and showed up in Monticello discovered by Sky Whitney and sending his mother Geraldine into a state of shock and faint upon seeing him for the first time since his so called death. That would have been a very interesting storyline. Edge had an exceptional talented cast and crew. Edge jumped when CBS was forced to move the show to 2:30pm EST. The time change lost most of the core audience. At the time I felt Edge could have stayed on CBS because CBS canceled one of their game shows "Give N Take". CBS could have moved the show to 4pm EST but P&G did not want that. Edge would have lasted had they stayed on CBS.If CBS would have canceled "Love of Life" that would have freed up the half hour CBS needed to keep Edge but I really couldn't see Edge on that part of the day at 11:30am EST because Edge is more of a late afternoon show.
If CBS does, indeed, cancel Price Is Right, this soap ought to be brought back from cancellation, with all the others in the CBS daytime lineup moved up one hour earlier. Imagine the 21st Century plot twists such as Monticello now being a mega-city relying on ethanol as its major industrial source, run by a power mad Sam Lucas-type crook. (Remember Somerset?) There should also be an opening credit shot of New York's new Freedom Tower against the skyline as it goes from daylight to dusk before the first commercial break in commemoration of the 2001 terrorist attacks.
For me the show jumped the shark when P&G started interfering bad. First, they moved the time slot. Very bad choice. It was doing wonderful where it was. Ratings went down and they decided to move it to ABC. That hurt. Second, they started interfering with the shows storylines. Henry Slesar knew exactly what he was doing. He was a master at what he did. His last storyline about the murder of Nora Fulton was great. At first I had no problem with Lee Sheldon. He knew he had an uphill battle to climb. I never was a big fan of his work but I loved the show and characters hoping that things would change. It just kept going downhill. Hated the fact that the show seemed to revolve around Sky and Raven. Goofy storylines. Older characters wasting in the background. I suppose it was a good thing to pull the plug than allow that.
It jumped the shark when Lee Sheldon came aboard and killed off Nicole, turned Raven into a younger Nancy Karr, (love Nancy Karr but that was not Raven), broke up Jody and Gavin, and paired Jody and Preacher. I loved the Martyr of Eden storyline and Jody and Gavin were THE couple teenagers watched it for, but I hated the whole Louis Van Dyne storyline of subliminal messages, Video Disco, (where 4 people counted as a crowd), and Robbie Hamlin.
I wasn't born when this show was still making episodes, but I have episodes of it and I have to say this show Jumped the Shark in 1983 into 1984,However it was starting to Jump in 1982,But in 1983-1984 It was first
When they got rid of Henry Sleazer and brought in Lee Sheldon.
The Louis Van Dine Storyline when he was trying to Brain Wash the citizens the of Monticello.
The whole Video Disco Story was very Odd.
However it was still a good show even when it became Strange.
