During the final season, many mistakes were made IMO. First, they bring on a British woman only to kill her off after several episodes. Second, after previously showing single guy Joey making eyes at the divorced mother, the writers reveal in the first episode that they were an item. Then, all too soon afterward, she is pregnant with their child. These swift developments led me to believe that the actress was pregnant, and the writers were trying to include her condition. It would have been more believable if she had been made pregnant by an off-camera date.
The show didn't jump and I thought Tony did a good job! The one episode I remember in detail was when the woman spanked her kid at a department store and she got in trouble for child abuse. The give and take between Tony and the woman he was dating about the issue presented both sides pretty well. The Monday 10pm spot seems to be cursed for CBS despite the high ratings the 8-10 sitcoms get, but looks like CSI Miami will finally break it.
As if hiring mental midget Tony Danza (fresh off his stellar work in Hudson Street) wasn't painful enough, the producers (quite the brain trust, let me assure you) go out and hire a real midget to portray attorney life in all shapes and sizes. Quite uplifting, so to speak. Also pleased to note that Dixie Carter's bourbon-honed southern drawl is still as shrill and unnerving as ever.
I loved this show but i hated it when Randi's lover....can't think of his name...Christian was his real name..anyway when he left. I thought he was so cute and when he left it was sad.
I don't think the show jumped. I LOVED it and was sad to see it go. Tony Danza wasn't the best lawyer, he should stick to what he does best which is comedy. Kathleen Quinlan was too passive and never really made an impression on the show. The cast addition of Meredith Eaton is what drew me in. I am an admirer of her work and think she is sassy and intriguing. I also am surprised that people are calling her a "Midget" when at press interviews she makes it clear she is a dwarf and midget is a derogatory word. As always Dixie Carter is talented and a sketch of class. Overall, sad to see the show go.
I was annoyed when Tony Danza joined the cast for this reason: In the first season Julie Warner had the special last billing (the "and" billing). When Tony joined, Julie was shoved back to the "with" billing so he could have the "and" billing. I thought that was rude and unfair to her. I also thought the show lost something when Julie Warner left. That being said however, I think the show never jumped the shark. It was always well-acted and well-written. As far as issue shows go, this was one of the few shows (perhaps the only show) to genuinely present both sides of controversial issues. The show even had a Christian character who wasn't either preachy or loony (as such characters are often unfairly portrayed). I thought the cast was all wonderful and welcomed the addition of Meredith Eaton (the dwarf lawyer) who became my new favorite character after Julie Warner left. I didn't always like or agree with the outcomes of their cases, but it was still spellbinding to watch.
Tony Danza and the stunt casting of the midget lawyer. Maybe Tony can give her a boost up so she can jump the shark herself and then he can follow.
I think Family Law is the one of the best shows on tv. The cast is excellent. Especially Dixie Carter, Kathleen Quinlan, and Christopher McDonald. The relationship between Rex and Lynn was a really good idea and I think helped the show. I don't know how anyone could not like this show cause it is amazing.
I say it jumped on day one. I've only seen it a few times, and I think Tony "worse than McGinley" Danza came aboard well after the ship hit the iceberg. In fact, I'd say they were already on the bottom and even Danza can't make them sink much lower. I base this on last night's episode. It was so far below the worst muck on TV that it only could have achieved such a low if in the first episode the cast had just cleared the shark pit without even getting their leather jackets wet. Last night (3/26/02), one stupid lawyer tells her client to lose his job so his kid can get some medical procedure, then when they are accused of fraud (can you say disbarment??!) the lawyer ups the ante and has them divorce. Then they give the kid to the state in a last ditch effort to get medical treatment. Not only does the judge buy this still steaming pile of diarrhea, but he goes on to accept a motion making the parents the kids foster parents. They all should have been thrown in jail for contempt, or just for stupidity. My guess is the writers are trying to wreck this train, as they'd rather commit suicide than write for "The Worst Aspects of 'Who's the Boss' Moves to a Law Firm."
First time when Rex & the firm partner slept together and now they are suppose to be married, come on she can do better than Rex. Bring someone else on the show for a love interest.
Tony Danza's playing a guy named Tony? What are the odds? I can hear Robert Shaw screaming at Chief Brody already! To the above poster: Was and is there ANY law show that had/has ANY semblance of realism? Jeez, where's Perry Mason when I need him?
I'll just say this much - Family Law is the second-worst lawyer show on television. (Family Law is "bested" in this regard only by the atrocious First Monday, through which I lasted approximately eight minutes of the first episode.) As a lawyer, I can say this show fails hands-down when it comes to the law. As a television viewer, I can say that this show fails hands down when it comes to writing . . . and acting.
