Shark Bytes
This is one of those shows that inexplicably received absolutely incredible reviews before it even aired, yet when the show premiered, it was unexceptional to say the least, and nobody watched. Why are so critics so out of touch with the public they supposedly write their reviews for?
I remember the first episode being hilarious. Then it went downhill, although most episodes were at least "OK". The character was based on an actual person who was working in the mailroom of a talent agency and was hired by a top Hollywood star as his agent.
THE FAMOUS TEDDY Z was a short-lived sitcom which starred Jon Cryer as a Hollywood agent. The show was a little on the cheesy side and situations were contrived but Cryer was amusing in the title role as was Alex Rocco, who actually won an Emmy for his work on this short-lived series. With some sharper writing, this show could have really developed in to something special, however, I do not believe it was on the air long enough to actually jump the shark.
Yup, this junk was hyped as "one of the best new shows of the season". It had low production values, a cast of third raters, and not a laugh to be found. We are supposed to route for Jon Cryer, as the Horatio Alger/child of immigrants, but he comes off as charmless and weird. Worse, he is supposed to represent the world's greatest movie star, but when we meet this supposed great actor, he comes off as a pompous old homosexual fop. This show could have been daring and parodied a Jack Nicholson or Warren Beatty-type, but instead presented us with a caricature from the 1930's, a character we never believe is a top movie star, or one whom Teddy Z would devote his career to. And oh yes, before this thing ever hit the airwaves, there were whispers of Emmy Awards for Jon Cryer and Alex Rocco- the two of them couldn't get jobs as ushers at the Emmy Awards.
This would have to be a 'Day One' judging by my memory banks, but I do remember the grandmother character making me really laugh out loud once. I don't remember the situation, but she was trying to cajole him into not doing something and her desperation while trying to sort of act upbeat was really hilarious. No way this show could have lasted though.
This show was crap from the start. And yes, CHEESY, CHEESY, CHEESY. I agree the everything the guy above wrote except about Jane Sibbett. She may not have been that hot on Teddy Z but she sure was on Herman's Head. And I think her character as Laurie Parr was a forerunner to Heddy.
This show was a born shark jumper b/c of two things: First, it was hyped as "one of the best new shows of the season!" These never work. Anyone remember "Daddio"? These shows suck automatically. Secondly, it starred Alex Rocco. This is the guy who played Jo's dad on "Facts of Life" and he was the Ted McGinley of his day. When he shows up, it's over. His problem is that he's still playing that character he played in "The Godfather," Mo Green, the one who gets shot in the eye while getting a massage. Sort of like what happened to that show! Also, that annoying girl from "Herman's Head," the one who eventually played Ross'lesbian first wife on "Friends," was in it. She's supposed to be the sexy, love interest? I think not.
This was a great, cheesy show. I don't remember what station it was on, I only remember watching it when I was about 11 or so. Then a few years ago they had a marathon of it on Comedy Central. It stared Jon Cryer as a guy that gets turned into this Hollywood agent. Stupid, yes, but also extremely funny, at least to my 11 year old mind.
