I think it was right about hte end of the last season were the plot of this odd "dark-overlord" type thing was introduced.
Gigantor
Gigantor
Gigaaaaaaaantor
Gigantor the space age robot
He's at your command
Gigantor the space age robot
His power lies in your hands
Bigger than big
Taller than tall
Quicker than quick
Stronger than strong
Ready to fight for right against wrong
The age of color TV; Gigantor wasn't big enough to overcome that. "Bigger than big, stronger than strong, ready to fight for right...against wrong!" Words to live by when you are six.
This show never jumped; when I was a kid, I wanted to be Jimmy when I grew up-- then when I did grow up, I barely remembered this, thinking it was just a cheap anime cartoon, so I must not have been a very smart kid! Then I began reading reviews here, and I saw the Cartoon Network began replaying Gigantor again; now I see it was probably about the best cartoon series of all time. I was smarter than I thought! And it's clear that Gigantor is also smart, not just an automaton as some believe.
Of course I watched it. It was a great show. I especially loved when Gigantor energized by putting his fists together over his head. I remember the episode when he had his arms tied down with chains and couldn't energize, until he finally broke free. Great drama
I liked the episodes where Gigantor would fight other giant robots -- one was Toro, and the police chief yelled at him, "Toro, you're a big bully!" Quite a clever pun to a four year old. But I didn't like the non-giant-robot fighting episodes -- like when the crew had to find spies, or something like that.
Gigantor the Space Age Robot He's at Your Command, Gigantor the Space Age Robot His Power is in Your Hand Bigger than Big Taller Than Tall Quicker than Quick Stronger than Strong Ready to Fight for Right...Against Wrong
Gigantor flew thousands of miles over many oceans, but he never jumped the shark! Forget Frazier-Ali or Hagler-Hearns -- G vs. Smoke Robot #6 (who looked like a male version of the Statue of Liberty on steroids) was the all time great bout -- talk about rock'em, sock 'em robots!
This toon rocked!!! The theme was the best, and an excellent cover version was done by metal/hard rockers "Helmet" on the Saturday Morning Cartoons Greatest Hits compilation CD that came out in the mid 90's. I remember that one of Gigantor's antagonists was a robot w/ a big "M" on his chest ( Robot M ???? hey, it was 35 years ago) and he was controlled by shouting out numbered/lettered commands from a code book. Why some one else just couldn't yell out other commands and hijack the controls didn't occur to my 7 yr old brain at the time.
Great Show! I remember watching it as a kid. It was wild to find out that the producers also created Speed Racer another of my favorite shows as a child
It never jumped for me. I always liked the show as a kid. Does anyone remember the theme song - Gigantor the space-aged robot/he's at you command/gigantor the space-aged robot/his power is in you hand. Was there any more to it?
I was but a wee lad when this show came out(and remember watching it when I was preparing to leave for grade school in the morning). I loved the theme song and it was my very first exposure to the wonderful Japanese amime that was destined to come and change the face of cartoon animation as we knew it. Big ups to Toei Studios(& Trans Lux for the english translation)for exporting such a wonderful cartoon for us kids in America.
Actually, it's a lack of color..."Gigantor" was animated in black-and-white at a time when television networks in the U.S. and Western Europe (not to mention "Gigantor"'s home country of Japan) were rapidly converting from black-and-white to color broadcasting. Had "Gigantor" been done in color, it's reruns might still be widely syndicated even today!
i have never had the pleasure of viewing what sounds like a fine show (automatic points for anything with robots), but i am very familiar with the kick ass theme song that the above posters mentioned. i have never heard the original theme song, but i love the 1980's era SO-CAL punk rock band "The Dickies" cover version of said theme song. i'm not sure which album it is on, but it might be on their popular "Snukas over Disneyland" LP. perhaps another poster who is more knowledgeable about "The Dickies" could give more details.
I have been asking other people if they've ever seen this show. I get the weirdest looks, especially when I start singing the kickass theme song.
