Day One
Where's Shaina?
Puberty
That damn pelican
All about Okra
Shark Bytes
Gullah Gullah Island was mostly annoying. Too much singing, and that pesky pelican and, yes, Mr. Ron did have some wide gums. Shaina the Second couldn't act worth a damn. I'm all for educating kids about different cultures, but Miss Natalie always tried to come off like some down-to-earth African embassedor just 'cause she had some dolls with Kinte cloth dresses and always wore cowrie-shell jewelry. She got on my nerves! James and Vanessa were fairly normal kids and that saved the show from being a lotal loss. Too bad cool stuff like backyard camping and pajama parties came with all that singing!
i read an interview with shaina that she went on vacation with her family and learned what childhood was like. she didn't want to go back
Can anyone tell me where to find a dvd of gullah gullah island? I watched it as a little kid in the 90's and a friend brought it up to me and I'm dying for a trip down nostalgia lane.
Did anyone else find it extremely messed up that the little black kid was named "Simian," a word that means "monkey-like?" And it turns out that's the actor kid's real name. What was wrong with his parents???
Unlike many of the children's shows that we see today and yesterday the show Gullah Gullah Island was not merely about some toad and or pelican. My belief if I'm correct (and I've heard the two main adult charters’ speak at engagements that it was to inform and enlighten others of the way of the Gullah culture. If you watched the show you may have seen that there were many guests (non actors) on the show. Unlike Barney one big purple dinosaur with how many colorful (annoying) friends, Tele Tubbies (what is language they are speaking? and what is the history and culture behind it?)
As for the behavior of Brian in one of shows as noted in another byte, as a "badass Harlem boy" well I'm not from Harlem and have never been there but I have visited many countries and lived in many states and can say that it is a behavior of a overzealous Youngman". ET two! For Shania and the rolling of the eyes. I believe these behaviors were depicted to show how children may act. Was it not corrected and addressed? Huh! The old Shania must have stole the cookies from the cookie jar, the cookies first then her. All in All I must say I found the show enlightening and refreshing.THE PELICAN DID GET ON MY NERVES!(HAHAHA)

This show was probably one of the dumbest shows I've ever seen. I absolutely loved (sarcasm) it's portrayal of stereotypical african-american attitudes such as the episode when james wins a game against his friends and then afterwards, struts his stuff chanting "i win, i win, i win" like a badass harlem boy; what a great way to teach kids how to be egotistical morons. I also did not appreciate one episode when Brian states an observation about something and Vanessa rolls her eyes and scoffs "DUH!" in his face... yet another great way to teach kids how to be rude.
this show jumped the shark from the very beginning.

I hate hate hate that theme song, because it got stuck in my head and I can still sing it to this very day!!
I believe I stopped watching this show after they added Chansen the pelican. When the commercial introducing him came on I found him unnecessary since it already had Binyah Binyah the polywog(I might have spelled that wrong). I saw 1 episode when they pretended to be superheroes, and Chansen thought he had "the power of hurt" because his beak got hurt and he got a bandage for it. LAME.
Gullah Gullah Island jumped when the kids got older, both the children my age and the ones on the show. This show was captivating to me. I always and still want to know "who stole the damn cookies from the cookie jar?"
This show actually makes you feel sick to your stomach. The kind of sick you feel after eating rancid pork or something. That frog is the most annoying thing ever put on television since Al Molinaro from Happy Days. The songs they sing sound as if they were made up on the spot and I really wish the United States government used this Island for Nuclear testing.
