Jumped! The Hardy Boys books were all about action: fist fights, ambushes, explosions, speedboat races, car crashes, getting conked on the head. The only action in seasons 1 and 2 of the television series was the hair tossing. (I've never seen season 3.) I was 8 years old when the series debuted and (mercifully) too young to realize back then how bad the writing was. I had already read most of the books and Frank was my favorite character. I thought Parker portrayed him well, but I never was a fan of Shaun. I cringe through these episodes over and over for the sheer nostalgic thrill.
Got Seasons 1 & 2 on DVD and watched them. I have no real complaints about the Hardy portions, other than it does occasionally get tiring when they showcase Shaun Cassidy's singing.

HOWEVER, they botched the Nancy Drew portions from day 1. Pamela Sue Martin was good as Nancy, and her character was fine, as was Carson Drew's. The characters of George and Ned, however, suffered in the transition from written word to screen. What happened to George being a strong tomboy character? And Ned...poor Ned. He's a total wimp.

The re-casting of Nancy Drew, George, and Ned didn't help matters, either. Nor did the re-introduction of Ned, completely ignoring the character's appearances in Season 1.

In short, the folks in charge really dropped the ball as far as Nancy was concerned. A shame.
I think that the show jumped when Pamela left the show and was replaced by Janet Louise Johnson. I mean, she was good, but I missed the original Nancy. Also, I was sooo disapointed when the whole Nancy Drew series was dropped. The Hardy Boys were also fantastic, but they just weren't like Nancy Drew.
I the pam is better at nancy drew! I just do not like that janet louise johnson girl!!!!! I WANT PAMELA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Being 28? Shaun Cassidy was, I believe, 18 years old when he got cast as Joe Hardy. No idea how old Pammy Sue and Parker were, though.
I STILL love Shaun's song "That's Rock-N-Roll"!!

The show definitely jumped when Pam was replaced by Janice Johnson, or whatever the heck her name was. Didn't PSM leave because she wanted more mature roles? It was amazing when she appeared in Playboy, then "The Lady In Red" ... only to blow it again years later when she dropped out of a plum role on "Dynasty".
Although season 3 only consisted of 10 episodes, I hope that they will be released on DVD as well. The series is still really a lot of fun to watch today.
You can find both volumes (first and second season) at many stores: Best Buy, Target, Wal-mart, etc. Just keep your eyes open. Or you can go online to Amazon.com or Overstock.com.
anyone know where I can get a copy of the Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys shows?
i grew up reading the books in the 90's, and mi padre always told me about the tv series, but I never got to see them!I would like to see them now???
Shaun Cassidy...Sigh!!!!

Even now, at my age (44) I still enjoy watching. My favorite episode is the two parter "...Meet Dracula". I just love the ending.
i dont think this show jumped i think
its an entertaining classic. the episode where joe's fiance is killed
is the best work parker and shaun ever
did, they finally got to do something
for themselves and not other people
shaun deserved an emmy nomination for
that, and for like normal people
The show jumped from day one. I'm sorry but I could NEVER see Pamela Sue Martin as Nancy Drew. I grew up reading those books and she didn't begin to resemble her in looks or personality. It may have been a good show if they had called it something else. Bonita Granville in those early B&W movies from the 1930's was by far closer to the book. I wish they'd stop re-making Nancy Drew! Pamela Sue Martin was a raving beauty but she was a Fallon-type to me before Dynasty even existed. Whoever chose her to play Nancy Drew must've been the same person who talked Aaron Spelling into hiring Emma Samms to replace PSM as Fallon.
I thought that Pamela Sue Martin had the whole "Nancy Drew" character nailed down pat. Janet Louise Johnson was bland in comparison but when they dropped the Nancy Drew character altogether, the show went downhill. Bad decision! ABC should have bent over backwards to keep Pamela Sue Martin happy cause without her the show was crap.
Ok as a kid the episode where Joe's fiancee dies was my all time favorite ep, but then I didn't give a hoot about the books, and refused to watch any of the single Nancy Drew eps, it was all about Shaun for me and pretty much all my friends, so as long as he was on the show it never jumped:)
Pamela Sue martin leaving caused it to jump the shark. Nobody wanted a new Nancy Drew. The episodes are still fun to watch today Look for season 2 on DVD June 2007
