Unfortunately, this show started out on the wrong side of the fin and tried to work its way back. By the last episode aired, it was starting to get better and the actors were starting to get into their roles. I REALLY enjoyed the final episode, Out Of Time, about the feuding families and the princess that had been dead for 200 years. Lots of culture in that one. I don't think the producers had any idea what to do with the actors and characters - not enough time with the last-minute changes. Michael Biehn was substituted when Michael Madsen dropped out. Of course, Biehn was the only reason we gave it as much of a chance as we did.
In response to the above post about people just wanting "the sun and the beach and vacations and half naked little women," that couldn't be further from the case. That's all this show had to offer and that's why it failed...miserably. There was very little in the show that had to do with real Hawaiian culture. Granted, there were sporadic instances of Pidgin being spoken by some of the actors. A few customs were explored, but for the most part it was a pretty silly cop show that was set in Hawaii. Frankly, the Honolulu police are much more professional than what you saw on the TV show.
I couldn't always watch this show because of the timing. I've always known Wednesday to be my boring TV day so i hardly ever watch. But I was really sad to see it get cancelled due to low ratings. Maybe people didn't want to watch all that tribal cultural Hawaii stuff? I just thought it was really educative of what Hawaiian culture might really be like, but I guess all people want to see about Hawaii is the sun and the beach and vacations and half naked little women. Oh well.
Ladies and gentlemen, this show has been cancelled! After only 7 airings (an 8th has been shot but not shown) I agree with the other posters, this show jumped as soon as it started, it has no plot, no acting, no connection with any of the characters! Aya is a hot babe and will get another gig soon I'm sure because of her 'assets' but plz tv land stop putting crap like this on. I had high hopes like the rest of you for this show but there was nothing at all to like
I thought this show was going to have promise because of the beautiful scenery and potential for a strong storyline. But it all went downhill very quickly and turns out there is no storyline... and then, the plot needs an imaginary island 60 miles from Oahu that is supposed to be an independent "micro-country" outside of the U.S. (and growing acres of dope, to boot)? Phenomenal elevation over the dorsal fin- but still good scenery (natural and female)!!
When Officer Tomiya decided to scale the fence at the Air Force base to pollinate that rare hibiscus flower. Apparently the nut in jail caused her to take leave of all of her good sense. Dumb move for someone wanting to make detective. The writers must have been thinking it would give them the money shot of Aya Sumika in a snug tank top with her hair down. Frankly, I'd be surprised if this show made it through the season. The writing has gotten dumber--and it's only September! The actors try way too hard. The police force is ridiculously incompetent to the point of being unbelievable. It's as though the producers have gone for a cross between Hawaii Five-O and Magnum (with a little Miami Vice thrown in for good measure) and failed miserably. Too bad...because the Oahu scenery is beautiful. We watch the show just because it reminds us of our time there.
I have tried real hard to like this show, but I just can't. The detectives all dress like gangsters and act like Hollywood actors playing detectives. They seem to come and go as they please. And tooling around in a red convertible? Could it be any more conspicuous? Generally, I like one character and stick with the show, but on this one, there isn't anybody I can relate to. I can no longer Tivo this show.
Day One. The show is *terrible.* Just unbelievably bad. The dialogue, the literally unbelievable cases, the ridiculous shoot-outs, the fact that everybody looks like a Playboy or Playgirl model... Deader than shark meat.
Good thing they didn't put a "5-0" after the title. No resemblance at all to the Jack Lord masterpiece. Bad thing: everything else. Five episodes to Aloha tops. Place your bets, haoles.
I honestly think they figured if it was beautiful to look at, they wouldn't need a plot, acting, or anything else. Wrong!
The pilot was awful. Eric Balfour, the next Ted McGinley? Sheriff Akins exits ER as doc from Chicago. His character enters Hawaii as a cop from Chicago. Cross over? I don't think this one is going to last. I lost interest after the 1st 20 minutes. 5-0 was a much better show. Do the networks sometimes put these shows on just to cancel them after premiere week? It seems there is always at least a 1/2 dozen throw away shows (cannon fodder) that the networks put into the new line up only to cancel them after a few episodes.
