This show, along with Liquid Television and Get A Life, were the hour and a half of television I never missed. 7-8:30 on Sunday evenings was TV bliss. I remember that this show was very subversive and hilarious, like Get A Life. Remember when Eddie The Flying Gimp was flying around the house and convinced the little boy that he could jump out the window and fly too? Of course the kid hits the ground and screams in agony, and his legs look like 2 pretzels. When the parents get home they find out what happened, and tell Eddie they're going to kill him. So he flies around the earth and reverses time (Superman-style)and makes it look like he was trying to stop the kid, so the parents think he's a hero. Of course, he still lets the kid jump out the window and maim himself. Also, the Snuggles family, where the family always beats the crap out of each other. I still remember when the wife and kids are up late waiting for dad to come home, and they're very worried. Dad staggers home bombed, and says "Honey, I'm home, and I'm DRUNK!!" and punches her out. This leads to a vicious brawl between mother/father and brother/sister. I should stop before I write a novel here.
I totally never jumped! What stands out most in my memory is the flying gimp, but remember the movie parody of Rainman 2: Electric Boogaloo? That one still makes me laugh! "I'm an excellent dancer" and "Hit me one time...ow!...hit me two times...ow! ow!...hit me exactly 4,275 times..." Hillarious!
The Idiot Box was one of those shows where a warning should have been displayed beforehand, letting you know to swallow any drink you may have in your mouth. Mention of this show brings back a lot of good memories, I'de totally forgotten about the Flying Gimp... I remember the segue CGI Robot guy... "Home, home on the range, where deer and antelope are slaughtered on a regular basis by bloodthirsty men in checkered coats..." And the convenience store guy... with his caffeine pill and beef sticks... I really wish MTV would release some of it's old stuff, like The Idiot Box, Aeon Flux (not the show, but the Liquid TV sketch), Headbanger's Ball, Award Shows segue skits, like the William Shatner parody of Seven, or the Welcome Back Carter parody of Pulp Fiction, or the Partridge Family version of Speed...... the list goes on.
why was idiot box cancelled? Bellylaughs! I remember Willard Shreck, who produced his own late-nite variety show via the security cameras in the 24-hr minimart where he worked. and Diver dan, and the GIMP. the gimp was hilarious. Why does Keanu still have work but not Alex?
Never Jumped. The sketches were all hilarious. The only thing that sucked was that half the show was videos. Funny that MTV doesn't even show videos now, but back then, they took out half the show. Wisey Wisenstein is the funniest character off all time. BABALOO!
Never! Cutting edge absurdist comedy. *sigh* Not for everyone, I know. But the Burrowing Bishop will always hold a special place in my mind.
This was a pretty good show for its time. Eddie the Flying Gimp stands out the most. Remember that time the son was having trouble with a bully, so Eddie decides to fly to school and KILL the bully? He meant well. What about the guy fighting back against prank phone calls by electrocuting the callers? (And it was that same kid that played the little redhead on Diff'rent Strokes, another shark moment altogether...) This idea was later stolen by The Amanda Show. Remember Alex Winter tied up in the back of a sedan, trying to introduce the show while getting beat up with a bat? Hah! Unfortunately the show was littered with music videos. Oddly, when you watched repeats, there'd be different videos every time. The list goes on...well,not really, it wasn't around very long. It was good while it lasted.
This is one of the funniest shows of all time. PLEASE MTV!! Give us videos!! Please!! The Burrowing Bishop was a brilliant sketch. It was about a Bishop who had the ability to spin on his head like a drill and travel underground to wherever danger may be. Eddie the Flying Gimp was pure brilliance. (Actually, I think Beavis and Butthead ripped it off.) There was this flying gimp from outer space that would pull his shirt over his head, with just his face poking out, (Like cornholio). He would then fly. I know it sounds dumb, but you have to see it! Is he a bird? Is he a blimp? NO, he's Eddie, the flying gimp............ From outer space!!!!!!
For those that don't remember this, The Idiot Box was lumped together with Liquid Television on MTV. It was a 1/2 hour sketch bits show similar to The Kids in the Hall or the Upright Citizen's Brigade and starred Alex Winters (Bill from "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure"). They had great skits like "Lockjaw" which is about a private dick with tetanus & "Damn These Eyes!" Truly subversive & ahead of its time.
