Excellent show - used to watch on Sunday mornings when I was in junior high through high school. Spoke to me spiritually in a way that traditional church could not do.
Wow, Insight! They force fed us the Martin Sheen "Clowns of Freedom" episode every year at Catholic High School...We shall all be free one day, free to laugh and free to play, free to fight and go our way, yes we shall all be free...
Actually it was produced by a Catholic Paulist Priest by the name of Elwood E. "Bud" Kieser (aka "The Hollywood Priest") and his Paulist Productions. Morality tales, to be sure, but not heavy handed or preachy. Hip, edgy, and one of the few series to clone the Twilight Zone sense of irony and angst. Even Rod Serling wrote an episode. Plenty of A-list actors signed on to do episodes (James Doohan, Walter Matthau, Ed Asner, Jack Albertson). Never jumped. Insight is currently being rerun on the Odyssey Channel.
Insight was a drama anthology show that I think aired in the 70's originally on Sunday mornings. It was made by the Lutherans and was supposed to be a series of stories that conveyed a moral message. Kind of like a Christian "Twilight Zone" perhaps. Some of the episodes were even kind of bizarre. But this show was simply wonderful. I am not religious, but you didn't need to be one of the "converted" to enjoy this show. And the reason was simple. It was VERY well written. Great writing can transcend everything. While some episodes got heavy-handed, most were very subtle and it was always interesting. I remember a few great episodes including one where a hit man is trapped in an airport with some other people and has a change of conscience. Another one had the president facing possible World War III and trying to get the other world leaders to solve their differences before the whole world got blown up. It took place in this big war room with giant screens. The all time best was one starring Bud Cort (from the movie Harold and Maude) as a disfigured guy named Teddy who was pretty much isolated from the world by his mother, who was afraid people would pick on him. His only contact with the outside world was a "girlfriend" he spoke to on the telephone and an old guy who would sneak in and visit him when his mother was away. Eventually, his friends convince him to leave the house. It was amazing. I found out about this show from a Catholic friend who used to watch it all the time and told me how great it was. When I watched it, I was hooked. This show was so intelligent and well-written that it can be addicting. Some of the episodes are more realistic/dramatic, dealing with stuff like divorce or death. Some are more out-there. But it's always interesting. Some episodes mentioned God, but most didn't. And it had a lot of famous tv celebrities from the 70's in it. You'll be amazed at how many familiar faces you'll see. I don't know if any stations show this anymore, but this was a really great show.
