When the evil criminal genius that he put away years ago came back to get his revenge. I'm sorry, but this is just plain daft - even stupid criminals don't behave that way.
And, by the way, that particular plotline was the beginning of the end for Columbo, too.

This is the best scripted show on TV. I have the whole series on video. Each episode leaves you feeling satisfied and hungry for more.
Morse, the terminally morose dwarf who tells everyone to call him "just Morse," goes all gushy when a middle aged woman shows him attention and divulges his first name. WHY? Colin Dexter just wants the American fans to love him. This horrible plot turn (his first name is Endeavour - now you don't have to watch that episode) entailed another: Morse's girlfriend. Watching Morse grow happy is like watching Chris Farley get skinny. To make matters worse, this wretched harridan helps Morse solve a 100 year old mystery from his hospital bed...did I mention that during Lewis was mysteriously absent for that entire episode? I'm going to puke my guts out.
"Every single episode, some "respectable" member of the patriarchy was revealed to be a rapist, child molester, pervert, deviant, etc. And any female who did wrong did so because she was abused by some man." What? What does respectable member of the patriarchy mean? Have we been watching the same series? There are plenty of episodes ("Deceived by Flight", "Greeks Bearing Gifts" off the top of my head) where the woman is shown to have done wrong without any extenuating circumstances, and plenty of shows ("Absolute Conviction", "Deadly Slumber" to name some) where the man is revealed to be the murderer but with enough extenuating circumstances to gain our sympathy. Try actually watching the show
this show NEVER, EVER, NEVER jumped! morse and lewis are two wonderful characters - thaw and whatley an inspired pairing.

Morse reveals his first name. Why? Author Colin Dexter specifically said he wrote the novel in order to please the American fans. The enigma is gone, the humor lost, the shark jumped.
Wonderful, each and every episode. True characters, well acted, terrific story lines. Having read the books as well, true to the originals. However, refused to watch (or read) the last one simply BECAUSE I like to cling to the idea that Morse is still out there with Lewis doing all that they did best.
I agree with all the comments above. A wonderful, intelligent, thought-provoking show. I will always be indebted to "Inspector Morse" and Colin Dexter for clarifying my concept of the "Oxford comma," and ". . . the subjunctive, Lewis, the subjunctive." Regarding the last show and the Inspector's death? It's very hard for me to watch it without reMOrse. (A petite theft.)
The few of these I saw were marvelous. But the last show distressed me terribly, when he died of a heart attack and his partner walked out of the room weeping. That was a gutsy ending to a series, especially when people hate to see characters they love die. We want to believe that they go on forever, somewhere in a fictional world where no one ever dies. American television would never be this courageous. Kudos to the Brits.
Never. I'm not embarrassed to say that I cried during the last episode. PBS just won't be the same without Morse.
While Inspector Morse never jumped, he was better in The Sweeney. Some of this old tinged self comes out, e.g., in one episode where he leaves a phone message for a woman who later turns out to be the murderer.
