The New Munsters
Same character, different actor (Marilyn)
Marilyn doesn't notice (again)
Day One

Although New Munsters, actually "The Munsters Today", had an appalling first season with only one tolerable episode, (yes, I'm a masochist when it comes to bad television), I was amazed that the 2nd season was actually for the most part watchable. Alas the third season of it was stuck in a general feeling of malaise. Plus Moosie Drier guest starred on an episode during the second and third season and I have always been so gay for him!
This was one of the best sitcoms to come out of the 1960s hands down. Fred Gwynne created one of the most lovable, memorable characters of all time. Yvonne DeCarlo showed that she was an amazing comedic performer and Al Lewis...well, an eccentric character in real-life can only be eccentric on TV too. I don't even think they needed Marilyn & Eddie, just Gwynne, DeCarlo and Lewis were enough. The show suffered a big dip in the writing quality for the second season which is what caused its cancellation really. It remains one of TV Land's most watched shows.
No matter how many times I see a rerun of any episode, this show will always remain hilarious. It never jumped the shark.
Nor did The Munsters Today jump the shark, either. There were two problems with it, however: the beautiful Hilary Van Dyke, who played Marilyn, does not look like Marilyn Monroe, after whom the character was named, at all, and it was not nearly as funny being shot before a live audience. But it was still good.

Ironic how everyone consider Morticia to be the beauty while Lily was supposedly a frumpy housewife forgetting that IRL, Carolyn Jones was pretty and tall but she couldn't hold a candle to Yvonne DeCarlo's exotic beauty . Miss DeCarlo (born Peggy Middleton) had been a hot pinup from WWII onwards and was considered one of the most beautiful and glamourous actresses in Hollywood prior to putting on the green makeup for 'The Munsters'! Miss De Carlo took the role for the dual reasons of needing to support her family after her stuntman husband lost his leg in a stunt and because she always loved horror movies . Still, I wonder how she felt knowing she'd be remembered for the ghouly, middle-aged, vampire housewife Lily instead of the gorgeous, glamourous young pinup star she'd been?
Wow, alotta intersting posts here.Taking the Munsters abit seriously aren't we? For the record the show that set the standard for dopey bumbling husband and razor-tongued belitteing wife was The Honeymooners(1950's), also by far the funniest of the aaformentioned shows.
You are right Jim Taggart, the New Munsters was not the same show. The Munsters never did jump because it's aims were simple - it was pure silliness and just plain funny. It was much funnier than the Addams family. The Addams family was weird but not funny. I loved the goofiness of the Munsters and how childlike Herman was for example.
One of the greatest if not thee greatest shows of all time, never jumped (I dont consider the new Munsters the same show)
Favorite line:
(Family receives a call from someone claiming to be Dr. Frankenstein)
GRAMPA: Dr. Frankenstein? He's been dead for 100 years. But take the call anyways.
So many great episodes.

The original show was great, but then they had to go and ruin it by creating The New Munsters. The New Munsters was one craptacular show.
I don't think this show quit had a shark jump but it came close in season 2 when Hermann called Granpa a creep for running out on the family to marry a lady (who ditched the old bat). Maybe it ended just at the right time as how much longer could the family go on not realizing that they frighten people as bad as Saddam Hussein would later frighten Iraqi kurds?
PS Speaking of Hussein did you know the Iraqi mass-murderer and the woman who played Lily Munster (Yvonne DeCarlo) both actually dealt with the Shah of Iran at different times? DeCarlo was the Shah's lover in the 1940's and Hussein personally made a treaty with the Shah in 1975! Yes, this was the same Shah kicked out by Khomeini in '79!
