Jumped the shark with the New Kids on the block episode, they pretty much ripped each other through the whole thing.
I think somepoint they'll bring this show back. But only to cover Britney Spear's career. How she made a Greatest Hits album even though she wasn't around for 10 years nor does she have 10 albums. Then how she randomly became abysmal dismay because she's losing popularity. So the only way she can get back into popularity is to pull stunts like what Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton pulled.
Then to end it all as soon as everyone is slowly beginning to cater to her, it will leave to her saying "Oh by the way, NEW ALBUM SOON!!".
I've always hated Behind the Music. Because after I watch an episode of it even if it's artists I don't like, I thinka a lot on it. Especially the Pantera one, Was Phil really rejected from attending Dimebag's funeral? Was Phil really hated by a lot of Dimebag's friends and family? I've always felt confused on that episode.
Thank god it has been off though, we've already got enough shows covering artist's OUTRAGEOUS actions. If it isn't just the artists, then washed-out celebrities with no credibility or barely any these days. Who cares? I just want to listen to music, now the only way we can listen to music than to watch channels that barely care, we have IPods and MP3 Players. Not to mention Radios too.

Jumped with Chris gaines.
However, the Milli Vanilli episode was so GREAT that it should be on DVD. I mean, c'mon, after watching that episode one learns that the guys in Milli Vanilli found out that they were exposed while they were running track at UCLA....
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
The thought of those two guys running around a track ("Girl You Know It's True" playing in the background) and somebody interrupting there run to tell them that everybody knows that they are a fraud is FUNNY AS HELL!!!!
Another great moment of this show came during the rarely shown Meatloaf episode. I recall a scene where Meatloaf got pissed about how his voice sounded on television and how it drove him into depression. The next scene was some sort of re-enactment that showed Meatloaf yelling and running in slow-motion through the woods.....
Funny As Hell...

Jumped with the Shania Twain episode..
They really did do a Chris Gaines episode...Garth Brooks sat there with make-up on and everything...I think that it only aired twice....

Jumped because nearly every episode became sadly predictable in the exact same way (excess, rehab, overdose, repeat). I don't enjoy watching pathetic jerks waste huge piles of money or kill themselves.
For me, it jumped whenever the subject matter was a singer/band that I didn't care for -- which would be about half the episodes.
Three favorites are Def Leppard, REM (but I'm extremely partial, as they are my favorite band), and Metallica.
One poster said that they did one on Chris Gains. Now how was THAT possible - he's the thin figment of fat Garth Brooks imagination. Who did they interview, Chris's mom? His 3rd and 4th grade teachers? It boggles the mind.

Sublime? I mean i love that band, but...Sublime? that's all they could think of? And the fact that it's no longer on...i mean, isn't Husker Du just screaming for a Behind the Music? And Weird Al...i mean, he himself asked why they were doing a BTM on him....
This show definately jumped the shark when the Shania Twain episode aired. Not that I have anything against that hot chick, it just was not right and the show started to cater to more mainstream acts after that...
Great moments= 1. The Milli Vanilli episode...possibly the funniest 60 minutes ever shown on TV....
2. M.C. Hammer....possibly the second funniest 60 minutes ever shown on TV..
3. Styx...funny as hell, but not as funny as the Milli Vanilli or Hammer episodes..
4. Steve Perry saying that he never felt like he was a part of Journey...HAHAHA
5. The Twisted Sister episode...

By far theworst was Leif Garrett who was high during the entire interview and claimed he was no longer using drugs.
I used to love watching Behind the music when it first aired. I find myself in agreement with most other posters here in that a lot of the later ones they did were of people in the music industry that were about to release a new album within the space of a few weeks or days of the premiere of their BTM special. Creed, Faith Hill, Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls...ect, were to my mind a little too current and didn't have enough musical history to have much to say other than "we've got a new album coming out soon". That is not really a knock on those artist, but I'm just saying that those don't provide a good enough background to do a whole BTM on. Most of the BTM that I do like are the ones that focused on artist from the 80's ,70's and 60's. Those bands/performers have a certain history (be it serious rock or bubblegum music) and are in a position where it is easier to get a more thruthful account of those days, since alot of them are no longer in the music industry and don't have the agenda of selling a current album. I have read back on alot of the messages left on this site and it is interesting to see the Britiny Spears backlash. It is comforting to know that others here are tired of being told by the music industry and media about who and what we are supposed to like or not like.
This show was always endlessly entertaining, even if the artits they began to do were completely unworthy. This show used to be on literally 7 times per day. Now it's rarely shown anymore. Now all VH1 ever airs is crap like "Lindsay Lohan's Wackiest Car Crashes" or "Scott Baio is 45 and Still Sucks". It's a shame what happened to this channel...
I wish they would come out with some new episodes of this show, as there are still many more artists that could be covered. And I mean artists substance who really had to struggle to make it...not manufactured pop artists whose body of work will have zero shelf life after their heyday has passed (Britney Spears, Nick Lachey, etc.). But even episodes showing the low points for artists like these can be entertaining in a "can't look away from the car accident" sort of way (the Vanilla Ice episode comes to mind).
There are some great profiles offered on this show, and some really funny and even startling insights and recollections. Here are my two favorites:
1.) Tommy Shaw from Styx talking about having to go out and perform their "Kilroy Was Here" concept album in front of about 70,000 drunk, rowdy Texans at the Cotton Bowl Stadium. Hilarious! I think I would have bought a ticket just to hear the audience that night!
2.) The footage of Heart on stage the night that guitarist Roger Fisher lost it because his ex (Nancy Wilson) was now banging the drummer. Watching him sling that guitar around beats anything I ever saw Pete Townshend do in his stage routines. Ever. Absolutely savage!
The Aerosmith episode is probably the best one...very thorough. Theirs is a great rags-to-riches-to-rags-and back to riches story anyway.

Behind the Music JTS when they decided 70s pop star Leif Garrett was worthy of a full hour. First of all, Leif was hardly what you'd call a 'real' musician. Second of all, they basically talked about his descent into drug abuse because (duh!) his music career died before he was 18! The worst part was the reunion of Leif and the guy he paralyzed in a car crash because Leif was high on drugs at the time. It was an uncomfortable moment that probably would've been more heartfelt & meaningful had it NOT been on camera. The crappiest part of the Leif story is that the dude is still on drugs! His career is still in the toilet, he's made no comeback and he's still getting high. What exactly is the point? There are respected musicians who have awesome bodies of work that VH1 could've covered (Jimi Hendrix, for one) but, it seems VH1 was more interested in creating their own version of the E! True Hollywood Story. I have to say though, a few episodes were quite good. I'm not a fan of Pantera but, the BTM covering their long career and the death of Dimebag Darrell was compelling and well made. That just showed that BTM had the potential to cover some musicians that deserved attention & respect and whose stories weren't told all over the place. Instead, they pandered to lame clichés and picked half assed musicians to talk about.
