Now, I have to admit, I'm remembering based on when I was actually in this show's target audience, when I also thought Encyclopedia Brown was a total badass. Because otherwise I'd be all over this for how utterly cheesy it was. But it was a live-action Nick show, cheesy is practically a requirement.

However, as someone who actually lived ten minutes from Cocoa Beach, FL most of my young life, I was absolutely crushed when the show moved to Boston. Like most shows that move locations, it also dropped the entire cast save for Shelby, and it never kept me interested after that. As it was, young me had a hell of a time watching it because Nickolodeon thought Sundays at 6 was the best time for a family show, ignoring the fact that Sundays at 6 is usually sacred family dinner night, which means TVs are off. It was a royal pain for me to try and watch it, so when they did the huge overhaul, I was significantly less interested in trying to find ways to watch it in the awful timeslot.
Perhaps the same kind of Chinese who name their daughter "Irene"(yeah, that could never happen).
What kind of Chinese people name their kid "Shelby"?
aw im so nostalgic. i loved shelby woo. 4 me the sharke never jumped
I remember this show being mildly amusing with mediocre (at best) acting, but it didn't help that Nickelodeon insisted on replaying the episode about the missing dolphin over and over and over again.
Token minorities? What the f are you talking about? This show was unique in that it had no token minorities. In fact, the majority of the cast were minorities, though there were only 5 people in the cast. Shelby Woo was the **** and I'm shocked that's not getting the props it deserved for being one of only two shows to star an Asian American (we all know about Margaret Cho's All American Girl). This was a smart Nancy Drew-type show about an inquisitive girl who solved mysteries around her neighborhood with the help of her friends, the spunky, adventurous, danger-loving Cindy and the skittish, shy Noah (who later plays the homicidal misogynist Warren on Buffy the VS). This was a great show and would have been a great show...had they not dropped Cindy, Warren and the Detective that Shelby worked for at the police station and moved Shelby and Grandpa (played by the incomparable Pat "Mr. Miyagi" Morita) from Florida to Boston. The show just lost its original appeal as cute as a button Cindy was replaced with obvious lesbian, Annie, and equally cute Noah was replaced with cute but no personality, Vinnie, who served as a love interest for Shelby. Also the Detective, who I loved was replaced by a female detective, who had nothing really going for her. Pat Morita was still there but he could only do so much and between him and Shelby, their English was still only half good. What a shame because before the move, this show was the best thing Nickelodeon had going for it on the abominable SNick.
Space Cases was one of my all-time favorite shows, and they bumped it for yet another Nancy Drew wannabe? I watched a couple of episodes to try to change my bias, but it didn't change a thing - always, Shelby hangs around the office. Something fishy goes down, and she's on it before the cops even set down their donuts. She is almost killed by an unattractive adult. Ultimately, she saves the day without an ounce of suspense. They took away my "Kristain Ayre in a cheesy sci-fi" fix for THIS?
I was excited when this show came on because it was filmed near where I lived. I really liked Shelby for how smart she was, though the plots did get rather unbelievable at times (the vet locking Shelby up in a pet crate). But when they took it out of Florida, it lost it's local charm, and had also, by then, run out of any good ideas.
They ran out of ideas and so they could repeat ideas and have new developments with the neighbors they moved.
Ok, when a character's catchphrase is "I know" in this really over-exagerated, almost breathy voice, you know the show sucks. And it was always the same exact formula. The crime occurs, Shelby's at the scene of the crime, she's a suspect and must clear her name. Then, when she's on the trail of the criminal, she always ALMOST gets killed, only to cut to a commercial. And how come it's always her, and not that detective who is now in the car insurance commercials, who figures out the criminal? This show sucked majorly.
This show never JTS. It was a great mystery series that I always enjoyed wathcing. Too bad I can't watch it anymore. I think they should bring it back, maybe on a different network, like FOX. Someplace where this show will get recognized for what it is really worth.
When Shelby moved from Florida to Boston. It went downhill from there.
I hate my ex roomie and she had a small appearance on a show and after it came out she showed it to everyone at least 100 hundred times!!!!!!
So what if the show was cheesy. The mystery files of Shelby woo was kind of funny. Then they let go of all the token minorities and the show went way down hill.
