From season 1 through 6 I tuned in to watch NYPD Blue for the writing and to watch Dennis Franz. The guy is a great actor and the perfect tv cop. However, it came close to JTS when Jimmy Smit's character, Bobby, dies and they replace him with Ricky (Silver Spoons) Shroeder! Horrible idea. Ricky can't act. He's worst than the entire cast of Friends.
Still though, it was difficult for me to stop watching when the show still had that unbelievably sexy voice of Andrea Thompson.
Yeah, the show had major eye candy in the last few seasons. Rita and Connie especially in the last 4 seasons. That scene where Charlotte Ross is suprised by the boy in the bathroom is priceless.

I was a loyal viewer from beginning to end, but the convoluted plots got annoying. And while it made the show easier on the eyes, it was hard to believe the female detectives over the years -- tiny, gorgeous women in 5-inch heels, one after another. Except for Sipowicz and Medavoy, it basically became Baywatch.
This show NEVER JUMPED. Characters may have come and go, but Dennis Franz was the glue that held this show together! Dennis Franz made overweight, bald, middle-aged men SEX SYMBOLS in the 90's! Even George Costanza had a 24x36 poster of him in his bathroom on Seinfeld that he pattered his hair styling techniques from in '98.
Besides Dennis, my favorite character was John, the gay PAA (receptionist). I loved his looks he gave to every situation that went on in the detective squad. What was going through that little mind of his? This show rocked!
I wish they'd release more DVDs. All they have are the first four seasons on DVD. I'd like to own the whole set. RELEASE THE OTHER SEASONS, FOX!

this was the best t.v. drama ever....hands down !!and fox tv if your reading this were ready for more seasons on d.v.d.
Never jumped... the storylines with everyone close to Andy dying were getting old, but there was still alot out there to write about. Why can't they come out with the rest of the series past season 4 on DVD???
The first year of NYPD Blue was one of the finest seasons of any TV show. David Caruso was outstanding as John Kelly and was the perfect complement to Andy. Had the show ended upon Caruso's departure it would have been the greatest cop show of all time.
Jimmy Smits coming in allowed the show another three or four good years. It should have definitely ended when he left. Did they have to kill him off?

Morons actually think that hiring an actor is jumping the shark? Oh yes, hiring one actor is totally jumping the shark, what perfectly clear, logical thinking. If you honestly think that's jumping the shark, you have no idea how TV shows work out. While you may not like an actor, that isn't jumping the shark - that's just a bad judgment call.
The first jump the shark moment was when they turned this into the "andy show", just like what 24, turning it into the Jack Bauer show. The second jump the shark moment was is that everything bad happens to Andy, to the point that it became like a one-trick pony.

Duh. That's what I've thought all along about this stupid show. The greatest irony however, is that when David Caruso starred in the first season, it was actually watchable AND he was a good actor (unlike his posturing on CSI: Miami nowadays). It was as if he knew that Bochco and co. didn't really WANT him on the show in the first place (and indeed they didn't, they ALWAYS wanted Jimmy Smits from the start), so Caruso tried his best to prove them wrong and do the best work he could, and the first season reflected this urgency and tension.
But once he let the fame and hype inflate his ego, Caruso became so difficult that when he quit, everyone was glad to be rid of him and replaced with the more reliable Smits. And THEN they got the show they wanted all along, a complacent, cliche'-ridden load of crap that coasted on its early hype and promise that it never lived up to since. And that is why NYPD Blew BLEW, because it WASN'T brilliant, but it deluded itself (and viewers & critics too afraid to admit otherwise) into believing it.

Not sure when it jumped exactly, but it was when I realized, probably around season 3, that every show was identical. Bad crime, Sipowicz and current partner go out, bring in the perp, break him/her in the interrogation room. I couldn't watch it any more after that.
This show never jumped. Ever.
Dennis Franz was truly the heart of the show, and who could ever forget him.
I still watch the reruns all the time.
My favorite scenes were with Andy & Bobby - but any time Dennis Franz was on the screen, it was good - it was very good.
The show's guest stars and extras were the best of the best, and that was because they were (very often)Broadway actors - free to work on filming during the day because the show (being filmed in NYC) allowed them to act in plays in the evenings.

Why couldn't anything good ever happen to Andy? Nothing turned out good for him. How sad, because Andy was a good guy.
The guy that played the PAA, the gay guy, was brilliant and I loved his facial reactions peppered throughout the show. He brought pure gay brilliance to the NYPD precinct.

I loved Bill Brochtrop on the show and his non-verbal gestures and facial expressions were priceless. In the end, I watched the show for him alone. And Andy was such a homophobe. I love this show. It only got better after Caruso left. Good riddance.
I think the only 'jumping' took place when the show was taken off the air. Crime always happens, so there'd be lots of story left to tell.
Like the 'Law & Order' franchise, character replacement never seemed to do any harm to the show, in my opinion.
I was a little leary about 'Zach Morris' coming in as Andy's partner, but he did great.

One of the great shows of all time.
Got stupid and jumped the shark when all this bad stuff KEPT happening to Sipowcz. Wife dies, son dies, second son gets cancer, partner dies, blah blah.
Didn't think I'd like his new partners (Schroder and Gosselear) but I did.
Also thought it was stupid that all these hot ladies fell for fat, lots of issues, Sipowicz.
