There's gonna be a Smurfs movie? I would go to see that. Hopefully it won't include long boring situations with Yohann and Pee-Wee, because those two medieval-acting dorks were what caused the show to jump. My favorite Smurfs were Jokey and Harmony, and one of the coolest episodes I remember is the one where the Smurfs turned an alarming shade of violet and ran around shouting, "G'nap! G'nap!"
The Smurf movie will be CGI. Not sure Gargamel will be computer generated. It would really be weird to see a live action Gargamel with CGI Smurfs.
There's a movie on the way...God, I hope it doesn't suck as bad as the Alvin and the Chipmunks movie.
While The Smurfs themselves didn't Jump The Shark per se, the rock band Scorpions did in a song from their 1984 LP, "Love At First Sting". In the song "As Soon As The Good Times Roll", lead singer Klaus Meine sounds like Papa Smurf on steroids! I always get laughs when I hear the tune on my CD player, knowing I can't enjoy the guitar melody without hearing how wretched Meine sounds on that track!
How can "Tail-biting smurfs" get any votes? That device should cause the resurrection of any show. Just imagine any show where cast members bite each other on the ass.... it would be gold. As for the smurfs - it was one of my favorite episodes and as an 7 year old I would hop around saying "Ganap" and pretending to bite my sisters. Wrong - yes - Shark jumping? no.
I liked the original Smurfs a great deal, but then someone had to go and tweak it by adding the Smurflings and the show was ruined.
This happens all of the time in sitcoms, when the kids get too old and all of sudden, someone gets pregnant. They are just trying to catch lightning in a bottle again but that seldom works.
It is really never a problem for a cartoon because the characters never have to age.
The Simpsons have been on for many years and Bart, Maggie and Lisa are the same age. I don't know why the Smurflings were added, they just weren't needed.

FYI, Smurflings and Americanized Smurfs are the same. It's pointless to have them as two separate reasons. And yes, the introduction of the smurflings turned this cute and fun show into crap. Papa smurf was the leader who made sure things went right, but when the smurflings came along he became little more than their 24/7 babysitter. Then came that damn puppy, making things worse. I loved this show, but...the Smurflings ruined everything.
I think the show started its decline with the introduction of the Smurflings in 1985, though the downslide was rather gradual than drastic. I personally didn't like how they introduced the Smurflings into the show by having three adult Smurfs de-aged and having a young female Smurf created the same way Smurfette was created. Around that time I was busy working on my fanfiction novel EMPATH: The Luckiest Smurf, which would (and now that it's finished, does) take place a year after the Smurflings were introduced, basically ignoring later introductions such as Grandpa Smurf, Wild Smurf (which to me seemed like a copy of my Empath character, only Tarzan-ed), Nanny Smurf, and Smoogle. I totally tuned out when the show reached the "goal-oriented" season of time-traveling, which to me said that this show has just about reached its limit.
I was getting too old for cartoons when this came on, but I watched it anyway. The stories were quite good for any age.
I will agree with most other people here. I could no longer watch once they added those younger smurfs. I think they had southern accents. Then where did those two young humans come from. I think they were princes. One was named Yohan.
Who created the smurfs anyway? I remember there was a good wizard named Omnibus. Maybe it was him. First there was Papa and other smurfs showed up.
My favorite was that one where Brainy ran the whole village when Pop was away. There was a lot to learn in that story. Lots going on.
The only one I liked with the baby smurf was when he spoke his first word. Pop discussed other smurfs first words. I forget what they were, but they were an indication of what the smurf would grow up to be. Baby's first word was "Gargamel". Good foreshadowing there.
Does anyone remember the ***** game? It came out I think in 1981 or 2. It was on the ColecoVision system. The company that started Atari's downfall. The Smurf game was real simple. You just walked the forest and avoided stuff and rescued Smurfette.

When Snappy,Slouchy and Nat went in Father Time's clock and came out as Smurflings. I have two words for that.BBBBBBBBBBIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGGGG MMMMMMMMMMIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSTTTTTTTTTTAAAAAAAAAAKKKKKKKKKEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!
Is Smurfs on DVD yet? I watched this series as a kid and these days there are no more sat morning cartoons like we had in the 70s-80s. Smurfs were good clean American cartoons.
"The Smurfs"had TWO REALLY GOOD episodes-These were early ones(I think,WITHOUT those little Smurflings,Grampy Smurf,Scrupel,or Yoaann and Peewit)1)"The Master Smurf",in which for a brief time,Greedy became a tyrant known as "GREEDY-THE MASTER SMURF!",he chuckled maniacally, while wearing one of the "crown of the titans".And in that one,it was a classic scene in which Gargmel took orders(under the crown's spell before wising up)from Greedy.Another one,was 2) the classic one where one of them(I don't know who)was bittewn by a fly on the tail and turned purple, and grinned evilly, and shouted "G'NAP)and bit the rest of them.
