This takes me back. Loved this show. I guess I was younger than I thought when this ran on PBS, since until just recently, I thought Greg Brady had found another gig as Jeff the mannequin. (I thought I was crazy until I looked at one of the previous posts and someone referred to the mannequin as Greg.) Being around 9 or 10 and not having any money, I remember drawing a book with these characters (one of my many volumes of artistic work from 1985 to 1992) to give as a birthday present to a younger friend. I would give my life savings to see this book again, along with the Inspector Gadget comics I drew, my original Lobsterman comic, and the Tiny Toon Adventure book I bequeathed to future generations at Madison Middle School.
Like Square One TV taught me math, Today's Special taught me how to write in cursive, or at least I remember practicing writing in cursive while watching Mrs. Pennypacker. Being as young as I was, I could still tell that it seemed like Jodie and Jeff liked each other and would have made a good couple (and to another, creepier extent, Sam and Muffy.) Just seeing the name of this show, I have a song loop in my head thanks to Sam- ("yo heave ho, sailing across the ocean blue", or something to that extent) and remembering everything in the control room going haywire and shaking side to side. The only instance where I can remember the mime is when she was running in place and I thought that was so cool. Like the moonwalk, after hours of practice, to this day I still cannot get it to look right. Today's Special, thanks for the memories, and I hope to see you soon on DVD.

guys...help me out! i am trying to think of another show, probably PBS in the 80's, that reminds me of Today's Special. All I can remember is that it took place in a store that was ran by an old man...and there was a long counter., but i know it wasn't Today's Special...
i know, that's hardly any detail but that is all i can remember...
anyone know?

Wow, I have been wondering if I was the only one who remembered this show! I live in NH in the US and I watched it all the time, loved it! I also remember the show "Read All About It"...I must have been watching Canadian public television...? There was also one that maybe was Canadian (?) about a bee that did the news... can't remember what that was called...
This show never jumped the shark, and there are still many nostalgic Today's Special fans that miss the show.
ALL the episodes need to be on a DVD box set!
I loved Today's Special ever since I first watched it on Nickelodeon as a small child. In fact this show is as old as I am! This show never jumped the shark!
Today's Special jumped the shark with the episode about the drunk photographer taking pictures in the store.
I seriously love this show with all of my heart and always have. I must say I almost peed my pants when I saw, "Jeff lost his hat...again." Does anyone know if you can buy this show in DVD form? Seriously....nothing would be better.
Today's Special never jumped the shark. It was always brilliant! Although some people seem to have been frightened by the idea of a mannequin becoming a human being, I was in love with the concept.
LOVE THE INTRO MUSIC (something like this) Today's special...it's about to appear Today's special " With magic everywhere A world for us to share And friendly faces hoping that you'll want to meet us there For today's special REPEAT Today's Special YEAH shout it loud and clear...Todays Special
I don't think Today's Special ever jumped. It was an extremely weird and cheap show but I always got a kick out of it. Does anyone remember the live special they showed on Nickelodeon, with Jeff getting all excited about finally being able to leave the mall and singing "We're goin' out!"? And at the end Jody is singing a lullaby to Muffy as they ride home in a limo? I had my mom tape that and watched it like a mofo when I was in first grade. Also, to the person who asked about Under the Umbrella Tree--I used to watch that all the time on the Disney Channel when I was in grammar school. I loved it. Iggy was a scream.
I remember watching this show in the mid-80s (About 1985 on), and I liked it then. I realized how horrible and convoluted it was once I was old enough to recognize that there are essentially bad kiddie shows(I was probably 12 by then, and it was the mid-90s, way after this show was gone). Everything about this show was aggravating--particularly Jeff the stupid-ass mannequin (who just happens to share the name of my stupid asshole ex-bf--I hate you Jeff!!!!). Sorry bout that. I feel better now. But, anyways, this show reaked. Sam was stupid, and so was his computer. Jody--I dont even want to know. Muffy?? MUFFY?! Somebody murder that stupid mouse. It's reminiscent of the one we killed in my house when I was 4. It was so bad and cheesy, and I wish I noticed it MUCH sooner. and by the way, go to hell Jeff (both the mannequin and the ex-bf)!!!
This show never jumped! I used to love watching this show! I wish they'd show it in re-runs here in Canada, because, even at my age, I'd watch it again.
I miss seeing Jody's pink jumpsuit... I used to want one like that, LOL.
Never jumped...I recall watching this show on Nick in the mid-80s when I was little, and even then, I thought it was just so cool...looking back now, I realize what an underrated gem this Canadian import was...it taught kids about both simple concepts, etc. (noses, trash, dancing, etc.) as well as a straightforward-but-realistic approach when dealing w/heavier issues like death and drinking...and yes, to that one poster, the latter ep did indeed Gerry "Doc" Parkes from Fraggle Rock as Phil, the alcoholic magazine photographer...kudos also go to the producers for their excellent handling of the subject on said ep. Oh, and Jodie wasn't that bad-looking, either.
