This show was wonderful! I loved the original premise the most but I still enjoyed the almost home episodes too. I do agree with people when they said it jumped the shark when it was renamed and moved to seattle. Dorothy Jane still talked to the man on the moon even after they moved and I appreciated that.
Just to clarify since someone falsely claims that they moved with their father: THE steven floyd and ruth ann disappearance was NEVER explained-not even in the first episode of almost home, and if you watch the episode of almost home titled you ought to be in pictures, chuckie lee refers to himself as the middle child and the only male in a family of female siblings. before, ruth ann was the middle child and it also ignores the fact that he ever had a brother. so it does appear to just be the chuck cunningham syndrome...
Also steven floyd and ruth ann were only different actors in the very first episode (played by Elizabeth Poyer and Benj Thall-from homeward bound) the rest of the season they were played by Aaron Michael Metchik, and Anna Slotsky-who went on to be on sister sister for a while.
hopefully this post answers some people's questions.

didn't this show have a name change too? I only saw a few episodes but it was a cute show. I'd love to see it come out on dvd.
Jason Marsden was NEVER in Xmen.
JAMES Marsden played Cyclops.
From time to time I would think about this show, but I could never remember the title. I remember watching reruns on the Disney channel with my older sister.
I like the episode when Dorothy Jane tried out being blond.
The episode about the party dress is one of the episodes I also could not forget.
DJ also had a certain obsession with the "Ice Queen". What was her name again?

I loved the Torkelsons. I really related to Dorothy Jane at the time that the show initially aired. I was a teenage girl living in a small town in the middle of nowhere. When they moved the family to Seattle, they lost me. I guess the NBC bigwigs didn't know what their audience really wanted. It is too bad. There are not a whole lot of truly good things to watch as a teenage girl. Maybe that demographic doesn't make enough money for the TV stations.
"Moving" is an oversimplification of what was done to this show. It was butchered! And I think the "city kids = evil" theme was used for the recent godawful remake of Cheaper By The Dozen. Every character on the show save Perry King (picking up a paycheck) had to be either sickeningly sweet or wretchedly unlikable.
If by then you weren't sure that this show had JTS'ed, it was confirmed by the guest appearance of one Joseph Lawrence, who'd been repulsing viewers (especially male) since his first appearance on Gimme a Break. I swear if you put milk in front of him it would turn into cottage cheese.

That show was great! Just one away from Flash Forward. I loved that each child had two names. I also liked the "Almost Home" episodes. I though it was so cool to see Brittney Murphy as a teen in her debute roll. I loved the Disney Channel!
This show really should've gone on longer. Even when they moved to Seattle I still thought they had catchy plots. RIP.
The show was pretty cute, sweet, innocent. It was a Disney Show, so I think it was primarily for kids and I was watching it from like 9-12 so it hit home with me. I do not recall Ben Affleck on this show....
It was kind of hard to get used to the family moving from Oklahoma (and the loss of practically the entire cast?!) but it was fine after that.

I am going to sound like the biggest dork ever here, but- the two missing kids went to live with there father. It was addresses in the first episode of "Almost Home"
Also, James Marsden went on to play Psyclops in the X-men series, Jason Marsden from Almost Home went on to play pivotal characters in Step by Step and Full House.
And the show definitely JTS when they moved.

Once again a series falls victim to the show doesn't need fixing it just needs a better timeslot. The original The Torkelsons was a great sitcom, it had down home values, and a certain type of appeal about a family struggling to get by. It had issues and situations we could all relate to. I liked the original premise, I liked how Dorothy Jane would talk to the moon, her rivalry with her sister, Ruth Ann (is her picture on a milk carton along with Steven Floyd's?) and how she had a major crush on an older boy and was the object of affection for another. I liked how the mother worked as a sewer and doing odd jobs to support her family, how they took in a border who became like family to them. This was a great show, then the next season comes, hey new timeslot but guess what also big JTS moment, because apparently NBC got it in their heads that this type of situation comedy, which was refreshing wasn't what people wanted to see, so take this southern family subplant them in a high society house with snotty kids, and make the mother the maid, gee have we seen this before, maybe more then once, oh and don't forget Ruth Ann and Steven Floyd have disappeared without a trace or a single mention but we the viewers are too dumb to notice. WTH, sorry don't buy it, and didn't buy this totally unnecessary retooling.
When the show moved to Seattle some of the main cast disappeared! What happened to some of the Torkleson kids? Was it an Oregon Trail thing and they died of cholera on the journey?!
It definitely jumped when the family moved to Seattle and two of the kids suddenly vanished. It went from being a wonderfully well-written program to just another lame-ass will-they-or-won't-they sitcom. When it was The Torkelsons it was the best show on the air. Not every episode ended happily. Does anyone remember when Riley Roberts rejected Dorothy Jane and the last shot of the episode was Dorothy Jane sobbing in her mother's arms on the front porch??? You don't see things like that on television EVER! Why did they have to re-name it Almost Home and ruin it?????
This family cracks me up. It's so obvious why they moved in the fist place. Psycho case mom went a little wacko and murdered Steven Floyd and that other ugly girl that no one really cared about, then she brainwashed her other kids that she randomly decided not to kill, and then moved in with Brittney Murphy pretending all is well and she is completely normal. Oh yeah, and how the hell did that loser Dorothy Jane get a date with that hottie from the football team, she made a more realistic couple with that Kirby boy. And does anyone else remember that really ugly hicky girl that Dorothy Jane was too bitchy to invite to the party?
