I don't get all of these posts that say TRL sucks, and what happened to my MTV? They don't play videos anymore like they used to.
I'm sorry, but if you can still remember what it was like 20 years ago when MTV played videos, then you need to get a life people, your in your 30's! MTV is for kids!

This show WAS terrible from day one. Promoting crappy music on a daily basis. Obviously, geared towards people who don't know what real music is supposed to be. I didn't care for Carson either I thought he was a tool. kind of like Ryan Seacrest but less annoying.
It is without a doubt, that this show was the final bullet that destroyed MTV. The Real world had already taken over the weekends a couple of years before this show appeared, so the afternoons were still free for videos. I recall that when this show first came on, it was called just "MTV Live", and featured news segments and videos that fell into the alternative/rap genre of 1992-97. I remember tuning in one afternoon and MMMBOP from Hanson was on. My friends and I could not believe how wussed out this was.. then, BAM...all Carson Daly and teenybopper crap. Hanson were the warning sign, but I had no idea how bad things were going to get. I would love to get at least one full hour of footage from MTV from an afternoon from the summer of 1983 and beam it onto MTV, disrupting TRL. It would be so wonderful to see a ridiculous Eminem interview be interrupted by "Twilight Zone" from Golden Earring or "Promised You A Miracle" from Simple Minds.....
I knew that MTV would do that because the ditzy Paris-obsessed 15 year olds clearly beat out emo kids with brains on TRL...
Thats so true that TRL doesent show the full video anymore. I remember voting and praying that My Chemical Romance's new video Teenagers would make #1, and when it did I was so happy, but my joy turned into frustration when I only saw a few seconds of it. Then the video was interupted by fans clapping and an update from MTV News on Paris Hilton. I was so pissed I changed the channel. I hope MTV openes their eyes, eveyone is loosing intrest. MTV, you SUCK!
As much as I think Carson Daly is a tool, he was one of the reasons that made TRL big back in the day. He really did know about the music industry coming from a radio background, and he was likeable (i know, hard to say now) during those early years. But once he got popular and was blinded by all the money he got, he became increasingly obnoxious.
The ONLY good part of TRL ever since I was 10 was the summer of '05 when Mariah Carey's Shake It Off (who was expecting to be #1 until the vid retired) was beat out by My Chemical Romance's Helena, which was EPIC. You VERY rarely see the emo/punk/metal band beat out the pop/R&B/Britney GARBAGE. Then Helena stayed at number 1 for THIRTY EIGHT DAYS (OMFG)...until freakin' Kelly Clarkson and Behind My Hazel Eyes beat it. Which was crap because Helena is one of the most innonative videos I've seen since, um, 2000. And BMHE is the SAME CRAP REHASHED.
So yeah.
So yeah.
I think that this show is LAME! Why would they have the top ten videos or whatever.. and not play the ENTIRE video.. how stupid... seriously though, its a waste of space for another show... I TRL!
I remember when this show first started and they showed the top five requested videos in their entireties; at that time the Goo Goo Dolls song Iris was probably the most over-played song on the radio but it seemed OK for City of Angels was a hit at the box office and MTV hadn't yet realized that the best and easiest way to make loads of money was to promote the Backstreet Boys as much as humanly and when that happened each day was: "Here at number one are the Backstreet Boys with. . .". After that, it was all about who to promote 24-7 so MTV can get richer faster namely the teenpop goo. I'd stopped watching the show long before this happened, but had the misfortune of catching bits and pieces of some loser girl say: "I'm requesting NSYNC's song BYE BYE BYE because I told my ex-boyfriend bye bye bye! WHOO!" TRL is a fine example of how MTV doesn't give a damn about real music anymore; it's all about money. Why else do we never see fat and bald but smart-as-hell-when-it-comes-to-music Matt Pinfield anymore? Why else would MTV have spent 60 to 90 minutes on how Britney Spears is the First Lady of TRL?
Man, soooo terrible sooo sooo terrible. I have nightmares to this day of screaming idiot teenagers on TRL and I haven't seen that show since I was in high school. (that was a while ago...)
I've just read that TRL is only live twice a week (M/W) and then tape a show afterwards. From what I've read, the video positions are the same from one day to the next. Um... as my posting below reveals, the music videos on TRL, just like on MTV are an afterthought. TRL just shows 5 second clips of videos these days and then cram as much MTV promos, celebs and artists who want to promote their latest work, and recap celebrity juiciness. All that is confirmed when I was sick from work a few weeks ago and ended up watching TRL.
HEY MTV, WANNA KNOW WHY YOUR RATINGS HAVE PLUNGED ON TRL, FORCING YOU TO DO TAPINGS? No, don't look to Carson Daly leaving the show. Blame it on MUSIC VIDEOS leaving the show. You see MTV, teenagers vote for music videos they want to SEE on the show - back when the show started, TRL actually played just about ALL the video. Hey MTV, when you only show 5 seconds of a video, there's a reason your audience will tune out and go online to sites that will show the WHOLE music video.
Get a clue MTV! The less music videos you show on your network, the more people tune out. The same goes for TRL. Why bother voting when you can't see the video you voted for?
I think this is nothing more than propaganda for bubblegum teenybopper music. I have never liked this show because I just couldn't stand how they just waste their time glorifying no-talent crappy ass boybands and bubblegum crap like *NSYNC, BSB, and Britney Spears. It's like they don't even care about real music like Coldplay, Linkin Park, Keane, U2 or any other talented bands that aren't manufactured crap. I think this is extremely unfair to people like me that don't like this trash. The only thing this stupid thing is good for is proving that music is not about talent anymore. It's about artists with no talent that somehow manage to make it big in the whole American music scene, not because of talent but because of their image. I hate when people only listen to an artist becuase "OMG THEY'RE SOOOOOOOO CUTE!!!!". That really pisses me off. I have no respect for this so-callled tv show.
Once upon a time, TRL was a show that actually showed a FULL music video (or at least most of it). Then, hosts stepped in. Gradually, TRL became an infomercial about pop culture and less about the videos as sometimes, only a 5 second clip of a music video was shown. Wow, this sounds just like how MTV itself evolved. Someday, no videos will be shown and teenagers will still be voting!
TRL has gone too far now. A recent episode I just saw had special guest stars, Avenged Sevenfold. Their first two albums were great, but their third album is whats making them MTV stars right now. First their on Headbangers Ball, now TRL. These guys suck now. They say they love bands like Pantera, Megadeth, and earlier Metallica, and they play metal, but how can you be a metal band when you have pop punk vocals in the mix? Its bad enough that we have to deal with the likes of Limp Bizkit, N Sync, Nelly, Britney Spears, and 50 Cent, but now Avenged Sevenfold just got added to that list. TRL has now gotten beyond worse. Its hard to watch when you have a band that was once metalcore on there and is now a mainstream alternative-metal band. I'm so pissed that they have so many fans and are selling so many copies of their new album. Way to go MTV. You just made a good band go bad, just like you did with Metallica.
Carson is a tool. Notice how he acts differently depending on the genre of music whoever he's interviewing performs? For example, when Metallica came on the show, he had his nails painted black and was acting all bad ass. When Eminem came on, he was a;; "gangsta" and doing the handshake. When the Backstreet Boys were on, he was all clean-cut. It was so obvious and so annoying to watch. What a nauseating jerk.
