Most people say that "My Mother The Car" was the worst sitcom ever. No it wasn't! "The Ugliest Girl In Town" though had a very catchy theme and an intriging title, was poorly executed. When it first premiered in 1968, it's the tilte of the show that attracted me to the series. I remember thinking, ugliest girl? So I watched, but even at 13 years old, I thought it was bad. I did, however; like "My Mother The Car" and I was only 10 years old. Outrageous premise too, but better written. And most sitcoms of that era were unique . . . Bewitched My Favorite Martain I Dream Of Jeannie The Flying Nun The Second Hundred Years Mr. Ed Arnold the pig on "Green Acres" I know there are a bunch more, but that's it for now. I think TV Land should rerun "Ugliest Girl" in a box set of unusual sitcoms of the 60's.
Recently I obtained some VHS dubs of "Ugliest Girl" and I'm glad I did because the last time I saw this sitcom I was twelve years old. Even back then I thought the show was a stretch! I also think the best thing going for this show is the catchy little theme song, so I'm archiving my copies of this show just for the theme. I must say that every time Peter Kastner dressed in drag he not only became the ugliest girl in town, but he also JTS! Sorry Pete.
I haven't seen this show in over 30 years, and yet I can still remember every damn word of the catchy theme song: Who owns that fabulous face? The Ugliest Girl In Town Who's clothes are setting the pace? The Ugliest Girl In Town Since the day she made the scene She's made the cover of every magazine She's got the whole world in a spin She's so far out, she's in! Guys are bustin' to date The Ugliest Girl In Town Girls are trying to imitate The Ugliest Girl In Town You don't have to be a Mia or Sophia This is the year of the clown Be the chikiest, kickiest Ugliest Girl In Town! Other than that, the only thing I can remember about this show was that the main character's girlfriend was this really hot blonde named Julie that I had quite a crush on.
Peter Kastner, fresh from starring in Coppola's first major effort "You're a Big Boy Now",decides to risk it all by putting on a dress and starring in one of the crummiest shows of all time. The show is promptly cancelled. Peter Kastner, where are you?
