If pressed, I will admit they may have done it by bringing in the actress who'd done the sexy mom character on Who's The Boss (Katherine Hellmond sp?). That was a rude bit of stunt casting. Having been subjected to the US series I found this to be an improvement all around. Must defer to the earlier poster about the Scouse accent as I'm no expert there. I remember seeing this in Canada and not being able to believe what I was watching...they were using the same scripts. Now I find this past year that there's been a UK version of Friends called Coupling and NBC made an American version of that. They messed it up of course.
This show about a shrew-like woman Caroline, her twerpy public schoolboy son Tom and her beady eyed mother, played by Honor Blackman, and their "comical" interchanges with a scouse handyman who kept dropping letters to sound "cockerneeeeeee" and, the only redeeming feature in the whole sorry tale, his pretty daughter played by Kellie Bright all under the confines of a plywood living room/kitchen backdrop jumped the entire aquatic population on the first ever show. I remember this show featured heavily in the ITV schedules in maybe 1993 and the fact that I haven't ever seen it repeated leads me to believe that the rest of the nation hated this cheese-fest even more than I. The single most annoying factor of this show though was the god awful mother with the piercing stare that could have curdled milk and the shrill voice. Kellie Bright cropped up in Ali G the movie but does anyone remember the show she got famous in? That's right....T-Bag. Now thats another matter entirely. Whatever happened to Tom though? I remember the older he got the more annoying he got. It seems odd but could his TV work have come to an abrupt halt as soon as this monstrosity was hauled off of the airwaves?
Why did an English TV producer decide to make a series based on one of the worst US sitcoms of all time, "Who's the Boss?" As if that weren't bad enough, they used scripts from the original version! Cue the theme from "Jaws..."
