One thing Jonathan could not do was play it straight. His interest in girls was so fake that it was hilarious. The episode when he steals Tony's Jeep to impress this goth girl, it was hilarious when he asked Tony's advice!
The show jumped when Tony and Angela finally admitted that they were in love. I have to be honest and say I wanted Tony and Angela to get together but when they did the wait was over. The audience got what they wanted.
Who's The Boss is one of those few shows where it's hard to say whether it jumped or not. Personally, I lean towards NO, for these reasons:
#1. Billy must go down in history as the LEAST annoying new cute child actor ever brought on to a sitcom. His banter with Tony and Mona was actually very funny, and they refrained from giving him the kind of obnoxious lines and storylines that occurred with Olivia on the Cosby Show. Plus, they never made him the focus of any particular episode, to my recollection (yes there were episodes where the main storyline revolved around him, however it was always more in the context regards to Tony's and Angela's reactions to it). One simply cannot conclude that Billy's addition was a jumping point.
#2. To back up point #1, some of the most hilarious episodes I can recall actually occured in the Billy years. Remember Billy's birthday, in which Tony and Angela were competing with their snobby neighbours? Tony asks Angela how much she'd be willing to spend on the birthday, and Angela defiantly responds "a quarter of a million dollars!". So funny.
#3. Yes, Jonathan was a boring character, but he was ALWAYS boring so that didn't make much of a difference regardless of the season.
#4. Aside from Billy, who I've already addressed, the show never really left its original premise. The characters did progress, but in reasonably believable ways (Tony goes back to school, Angela loosens up, and obviously the kids grow up). Mona served as a bit of an anchor since her character never really changed.
#5. The series finale was tasteful, making reference to the very first episode and following a very funny three-parter in which Angela tries to adjust to life in Iowa by, among other things, knitting blankets: "another day, another Afghan".
The contrast between Who's The Boss and Growing Pains (it's Tuesday night partner on ABC) is striking. Growing Pains basically ruined itself through a series of boring new characters, unintersting plotlines, and a surplus of "special episodes". Who's The Boss, on the other hand, didn't take itself as seriously, remained true to its original premise, and was the funnier show as a result.

Danny Pintauro aka Jonathan joins the list of cute kid actors who became an unnecessary character who was annoying. There was the Tony-Angela relationship with the banter of Mona and the hotness of Samantha. But the writers did nothing but make Jonathan a whiny annoying kid who is also a nerd. Then like all shows they bring in another cute kid when the old one grows up. Danny was in a no win situation. If he quit no one would care or when he stayed and even when the fired the cute kid he became a seldom used character. It was unfair that Tony Danza didn't come to the shows writers and help fix the Jonathan character.
loved this show. billy was adorable, they should have made him as tony's son when the show started. he kinda looks like tony, it would have worked. eleven year old sam and baby billy moving to connecticut and metting angela, jonathan, and mona
Tony Danza is a funny guy and I really liked this show. Even now, I can watch an occasional rerun and be entertained. I started to lose interest toward the end because everyone was growing up (so was I) and new characters were introduced. I think the woman who played Mona is great - I also liked her on Coach and Everybody Loves Raymond. I give this show an A+
Danny Pintauro wasn't on the show towards the end because he was caught touching the boy who played Billy inappropriately! When questioned by police, Danny replyed, " I just wanted to find out if he had 18in. of fun,rock-hard manmeat"!!

i read this article. i find that hard to beleive. because he was on the show until the end. if he did do this he probility woul have been arrested and convicted of the crime. also it would have been publicised. john

ok, don't get me wrong, i'm an avid wtb fan/watcher, but wtb went downhill when they added billy in the 7th season. annoying doesn't even begin to describe him. oh, and when tony got that teaching job in iowa. that kinda ruined it for me too, but the show was pretty much over at that point anyway, so wtb jumped when they added that annoying little brat.
Comments and random thoughts on Who's The Boss? from your boy.
1. I think the fans deserved to see an actual wedding.
2. Tony and Angela worked out, yes, but I would have loved for him to bang Angela's friend (played by Marilu Henner) in the basement. I know I would have.
3. Mona vs. Blanche? If it was a life or death situation (or a slow Friday night), I'd bang Mona. Blanche did nothing for me. The redheads get me every time (aforementioned Marilu, Mona, Simone on Head of the Class).
4. Speaking of Mona, loved her on Soap (Jessica Tate!) and later on Coach.
5. Loved where Tony tried to propose on the scoreboard (I have now learned that this is a serious proposal faux pas).
6. Loved the softball episode with Bob (paraphrasing "If they turned this place around, I'd be in the front row") Uecker. (Side note: Can I get Mr. Belvedere on DVD yet?)
7. Loved Tony's other work, (Taxi was hilarious. Character name: Tony.) She's Out of Control was his best movie in my mind, where he had the hot teenage daughter (sounds familiar), Angels in the Outfield (my only known, uncredited movie appearance to date: I was one of the hundreds of extras in the stadium scenes at age 14. They filmed a lot of scenes here in Oakland, CA.), and I also liked Hudson Street, (character name: Tony) where he was involved (married?) to the gorgeous Lori Loughlin. Additionally, Noah (with the lovely Heddy from Herman's Head!) was decent.
8. Alyssa Milano is a little overrated in the hotness dept. (Caliente meter: 8.5 out of a possible 10) but I loved her as Samantha Micelli.
9. What the hell was Judith Light smoking when she signed onto "Phenom"? The only thing that saved that show was William Devane.
10. "A O! O A!" was extremely catchy.
(Runner-up catchphrase: "O A! O A!" by the guy on the Gloria Estefan classic "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You."
P.S. to Jared: Alvin Pfeiffer/ Buster Arnold here. The Wonder Years page needs you back. You may be the only person on Earth that knows more about TWY than myself, and I can't hold it down alone.
I hope you enjoyed this trip down memory lane. Thank you, Who's The Boss? fans for your time, and good night.

Who`s The Boss JTS right around 1989 when Billy, that annoying kid showed up.He used to annoy the hell out of me, i was thrilled when he left, but by then the show was over anyway. Adding the so called adorable, barf, little kid is always the kiss of death for any show but the show had been declining in quality by then anyway. Then tony and angela hooked up and suprisingly, even though they had good chemistry, after all those years it was just...blah. It wasn`t the same anymore, it just got boring around 89 when Tony went to college, Sam and Johnathan grew up, Tony and Angela hooked up
Day One. How in the world could ANYONE stand that ancient, wrinkled rhymes with rut that was Mona? She made Blanche Deverau (sp?) look like Mother Theresa. And Jonathan was going around the maypole if you know what I mean from day one as well. Angela had a broom up hers the entire time. I couldn't stand the episodes where Samantha very obviously had a tooth missing - what was that, for about 2 full seasons? Could nobody involved with the show or her agent find a lousy dentist or something? Tony was the only one I liked, but I also find it annoying that the only name he can apparently respond to is Tony. How slow do you have to be?
