The great, great tragedy of this show is that NBC never got behind it. It is, in my humble opinion, the best family drama ever made. From the miniseries right up to the one full season it was always spot on perfect and didn't have that Freshman weakness that many first season shows have. It seemed to have always existed.
Richard Kiley was extraordinary as the patriarch of a Seattle family and who could resist the rest of a brilliant cast?
On Wednesday nights with St. Elsewhere, this was a perfect marriage of two wonderful shows. It debuted the same year the equally wonderful but different in tone Thirtysomething premiered.
This show was a perfect 10. I will never forgive NBC for not standing behind A Year in the Life!

What a great show this was! Great writing, great acting, real characters. There was a little cutie on it -- I think his name was Trey Aames. At the time, I loved him. I would love to see this show on A&E or some other cable station!
Although this show was not on long enough to jump, we were treated to a pre-breast implants Sarah Jessica Parker. I remember an episode when she's sitting in her laundry room on top of the dryer having a serious talk with her love interest. No bra needed. Then low and behold, the show is cancelled and she pops up in a Bruce Willis movie with a brand new rack!
This was a good show that never found it's audience. I really liked the characters and the actors who played them
I still miss this show! It's one of my all time favorites and if it was produced today would still be excellent and would hold up. It was realistic and touching. The only show to have the same level of quality since is "The West Wing".
"A Year in the Life" was one of three great television programs to feature Wendy Phillips playing the mother figure. The other two were "Homefront" and "Promised Land." And all three of them were cancelled well before their time.
This show never jumped the shark. It was a well acted, well produced television series. It was developed into a series from a successful mini-series that starred Eva Marie Saint and Richard Kiley. It was a touching and realistic view into an American family. I think it was on NBC. Too bad they didn't have the guts to stick with the show. It ended way too quickly.
