I would buy the DVD - if only for Sam Elliot....but in truth, I did enjoy the first ten shows or so.
it was a great series wish it was still going
The Yellow Rose was one of the best westerns on TV at that time. I loved their theme music and really fell in love with Sam Elliott. It was a great show and I wish they had some re runs on now a days
The show hardly had time to JTS with only 22 episodes to its name. Originally the story dealt with a south western ranch family by the name of Champion and their ranch The Yellow Rose. The family struggled with making ends meet financially. The owned a huge ranch that sat on a ton of oil but wanted to run the land as a cattle ranch and not use it for oil drilling. Most of the early episodes had the Champion's warding off attempts of a take over of the ranch by a neighboring oil baron Jeb Hollister. The first 11 episodes were fairly well written. The last 11 episodes pretty much stunk. Some examples of the week episodes had the Champions helping an old prison con escape, rescuing little 12 year old L.C. Champion from a child prostitution ring in Los Angeles and Chance McKenzie (a Champion who used a different last name) preventing an ex con he served time with from harassing the Champion family. Clearly the writers were reaching for material when writing these episodes. So while the show may not have ever JTS that is only because the powers that be terminated the show before the storylines could become any more ridiculous. However if your able to catch the first 11 episodes that deal with drugs coming across the boarder from Mexico onto the Yellow Rose or the modern day cattle drive check them out they are pretty good and Sam Elliot is excellent as Chance McKenzie.
Never had time to really jump the shark although it was a pretty terrible series. The only thing I really remember about it was that it did feature the beautiful Susan Anspach in all her faded glory. No longer the babe who rejected Jack Nicholson in "Five Easy Pieces," she still held onto her looks far more than the infernally overrated Cybil Shepherd. Although she had a relatively small part, every one of her scenes shined. It's a shame she never got more TV and movie work after her excellent performances in Mazursky's "Blume In Love" and Makavejev's "Montenegro" theatrical releases. Oh, Sam Elliott was good, too. But overall this show just did not last long enough to make a big impression either way. Too bad, it might have had potential along the lines of a Larry McMurtry screenplay.
Evidently the show was about to be canceled, so in the last two episodes they threw in everything but the kitchen sink. In one the heroes shot it out with rustlers while delivering a baby on the range. In the other the daughter was kidnapped into a child brothel. The show was canceled anyway.
Great show, for the short time it lasted, with an awesome cast. Remember former 60s cowboy actor Chuck Connors as the unscrupulous land baron? Even though it barely made it through one season, this one deserves another run.
I can't believe this show ever jumped the shark. I don't think it was given enough time too. I think anything Sam Elliott is in is noteworthy. I mean he is to a western what Bogie was to a mobster movie. S Sheperd was great too, but I think all credit to this movie should go to Sam Eliott. What a great show, can't believe it ever got canceled. Never do see any reruns of it either. What a burn. Long swim the shark, but never will it get The Yellow Rose of Texas
The Yellow Rose also starred sexy '40's and '50's star Jane Russell in her swan song. She was at this time a sad caricature of her sexy looks from years past. Her breasts, long her mainstay, at this point were sagging somewhat awful. She had also put on weight and looked more matronly than sexy. She was also doing Playtex girdle and bra ads at this time.
Didn't Sam Elliott and Cybil Shepherd star in a modern Western called "Yellow Rose" in the 1980s?
