As one of the original parties to the creation of Teddy Ruxpin I would like to mention that the original name for the story was "The Adventures of Simian Greep" (created by Bud Bankson) and Teddy's name was originally Simian Greep. "The name of "Teddy Ruxpin" was originally a minor character called a "Spungid".
Ken Forsse decided to switch the names as the name "Greep" was not a good name for a lovable character and the name "Simian Greep" went into oblivion as TeddyRuxpin became the lead character.
Hey, guys! Dan Lalande here, one of the writers on this series (I also worked on "You Can't Do That On Television" and "The Raccoons.") This show, a Toronto-Ottawa-L.A. co-pro, was a weird amalgam of "Care Bears" and "Lord of the Rings." Despite its ambitions, I must side with those on this site who maintain that it jumped the shark as soon as it hit the water.
It never jumped, because it never really had any opportunity to jump. There was never anything so radical in the show that you knew it was just going downhill...or at least, not to my memory.

It was a fairly flat show, but you have to give it props for having a lot of thought behind it. There were lots of interesting creatures, places, characters, and plotlines that just sound absolutely fantastic on paper, but just come out flat in presentation. Perhaps someday someone'll remake it to where it's not so dull, because there really is a lot to work with.

By the way, there was no character by the name of "Grumple". There was Grubby, and there were a species called the Grunges, but no Grumple. :D
How can anyone say a show jumped the shark on Day 1? It has to be a show you like before it jumps the shark, I don't think the show ever did jump the shark, due to the fact that the story retained continuity of both plot and quality of writing from the first to the last episode, as if the entire thing were already planned. I was a kid in the 80s, and I owned the bear before the television show even aired. The first incarnation of the show was a "land of the lost" style show based on the bear, in the cartoon they started the story earlier, included the part that had been live action, and then took the story to what became it's end. The intire second incarnation was animated. Keeping in mind this show WAS designed to entertain preschool age children and not adults, it was a great show and completely served it's entertainment purposes, if only barney could have been as cool as Teddy, we wouldn't want to destroy every purple dinosaur we see today.
oh please, if you freaks didn't watch the show when you were little, it would be very hard to understand the appeal. there's a REASON it's called a kids' show; it's for kids. duh.
Please someone confirm for me that there was a character named "Grumple" in this freakish show. Thank you.
I hated this show with the fire of a thousand suns. Teddy Ruxpin and all his friends were beyond gay.
I remember discovering Teddy Ruxpin late. I was never a fan, but one day in the year it was canceled I decided to watch a show and was immediately hooked. I deeply regret not watching the show and was only able to watch it in reruns for about two years. It was easily one of my favourite shows. Because of my age at the time I believe one of the major problems with Teddy Ruxpin is that it was intended for older kids (mid-late teens at the youngest) but the marketing was aimed at people around grades 3-7. So on one hand you had the marketing make the show seem infantile, so few older kids would admit to watching it, and on the other hand you had the show itself which younger kids didn't get, which made the show somewhat unpopular. A tradgedy.
I got the new Teddy Ruxpin made by Back Pack Toys Inc.

When they gave Teddy's wrm-like friend a love interest!! I thought Teddy was supposed t be the leading man in this. And, how was it even possible that they actually got that gorgeous cattapillar with the big boobs who looked just like a cartoon version of Britney Spears to be in any way attracted to that fat, ugly yellow turd?!?!?!?!
Teddy Ruxpin was the biggest puss of a cartoon bear ever. Damn you stupid bear grow some sack and eat that stupid old man.
When both Tweeg's and Teddy's absentee fathers showed up in the animated series. They seemed to arrive at the same time. Tweeg's dad was some surfin' grunge and Teddy's dad was a kind of mysterious hermit that had some issue causing him to run away from friendship of any kind (that issue turned out to be having his memory erased by the black box). Teddy's dad and Mom met in the final episode, which sewed the plot up for better, or worse.
I was a little kid when this show came out, 87?, and I suppose I watched it a few times, but the chief thing I remember was that one of my friends had the toy bear-must have been a rich one, too, 'cause that bear cost a lot of bread, and there's been inflation since then. But why dance around the fire?-what creeped me out were the eyes-I had nightmares about those eyes-in another life that stupid, incredibly overpriced toy could have been a cult object.
Teddy Ruxpin, like Transformers, Gobots, G.I. Joe, and a host of other children's shows of the 80s, was nothing more than a thinly veiled marketing tool designed to get yuppy larvae to make their self-absorbed parents buy them a toy-in this case a stuffed bear that appeared to talk when you inserted a cassette tape in him and turned him on. For many years I had the urge to put a tape of Andrew Dice Clay or Sam Kinison in the Teddy Ruxpin display model at our local toy store.
This was a gem that should never have been canceled, but due to the 1987 stock market crash and Worlds of Wonder going under, it was inevitable. I vaguely remember a live-action segment at the beginning and end with a guy in a giant Teddy Ruxpin costume. Am I thinking of something else, or is that Teddy Ruxpin???? LOL. I still own my Teddy Ruxpin, and it works and looks really good! It's almost like it was never played with! This was a cute cartoon.
