How about the fatc that there's never enough rock on this show to make it worthwhile? The first time I sat and watched this show (out of boredom one night) was in 1993. I had to wait well over 2 hrs. till Metallica showed up. Little did I realize this was a token modern rock act. The next year I waited over 2 hrs. again to hear Page & Plant do "Black Dog". I pretty much surrendered after that. Practically all music awards shows have become R&B/Country shows. It pretty much JTS years ago.
As long as we're talking Duran Duran...I think they suck! First, they're music videos are incredibly sexist and exploitive to women. Considering thei'r majority of fans were young women in their teens and they were being exposed to women being painted up and strewn over a boat completely nude. Britney's videos are just as bad. Alicia Keys is the greatest because her videos are tasteful and she happens to be a great role model for women.
I look over these comments here, and I see contrasting styles between generations past and present. This is a good explanation on WHY the American Music Awards jumped the shark. When Guns N' Roses accepted their awards in a totally plastered state in 1990, there was no way the producers could prepare for the f-bombs; there was no time delay; who knew if they would even say it again? Because of that show, the spontaniety of the show was gone.
However, the show still had talented artists gracing the stage for at least 6 years more. I feel the jump point happened when they started having comedians and ABC stars host the show on a consistent basis. (Keenen Ivory Wayans hosted the show in 1991, but I can forgive that because of the success of In Living Color, and this was before shows had network biases and loyalties.) The humor just wasn't there for me.
After 1999, that was it for me. The music became so dreadful to the point the show was neither here nor there. By the time the show moved to November, it was a done deal. This is not completely the fault of the American Music Awards; music as a whole has become total trash, and I feel Britney, Hillary Duff, Justin, Miley, the Jonases, and the other "looks without talent" troupe (I dare not even go into hip hop) are the fault of this. Once the industry embraced these hacks, they did themselves in.
Now, I don't even watch the show anymore. Until I find someone who has the old shows, I have to resort to finding clips on youtube to remind me how music (and the AMA's) was great in earlier years. It's that bad, and it's really sad.

I loved this year's show, but it jumped back in 1999 when teen pop took over and it was all about Barbie and Ken types flashing their torsos all over the place while singing crappy music. By the way, I happen to love Duran Duran and I think their music is alot better than any crap Britney dishes out. And their new ***** was loosely based on Britney, Lindsay and all these other messed up starlets in rehab, but it doesn't mean they fancy any of them. Anyone in their right mind who still has a thing for Britney is severely messed up themselves.
I agree. Even though on a side note I heard Duran Duran kind of have a thing for Britney, because they made a ***** based on her.
Are you guys kidding? I would much rather see Duran Duran sing Hungry like the wolf for the millionth time than see Britney Spears lipsinc anyday..
WOULD YOU GUYS GIVE THE BRITNEY SPEARS CRAP A REST ALREADY?!?!?!?! Thank you!! Anyway...I for one found the AMAs alot more entertaining than the Grammys this year, because the music acts were better. Nothing against nastoligia acts, but I'm 18-years-old and I like me some high-powered performances. I was hoping Fergie would do her thing like she did at the AMAs. Aside from Tina Turner and Beyonce' the Grammys was a snoozefest. The AMAs were great this year. And I for one am glad UNFITNEY didn't show her annoying face at the AMAs because it wouldn't be fair to the other acts who work really hard at what they do to be sidelined by some messed up tabloid targed who USED TO be a hot pop star!! I loved seeing Duran Duran, because I happen to like their songs and I think alot of the best acts out there today take their influence from them. Beyonce always dazzled me, because aside from being gorgeous, she's talented beyond belief and she can sing any style of music. Fergie...she is so hot it's crazy. Maroon 5...I love these guys. So many great people at the AMAs it's hard to name them all. But the AMAs jumped the shark when UNFITNEY showed up last year and when it catered to a much younger generation with all the teen pop CRAPOLA!!! In fact, the only part I hated about this year's show was when Myley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers and the "Highschool Musical" cast took the stage.
The show this year wasn't great. I can't really put my finger on it, but I felt like something was missing. I don't know what it was. Oh, wait, I remember now...
BRITNEY SPEARS!!!! >
BRITNEY SPEARS!!!! >
The show had shark written all over it when they got '80s hasbeens Duran Duran to perform there at this year's show, because the producers knew there was no way they'd be able to get Britney to play there. I personally think the people at ABC should have gotten Spears to perform because I know she is capable of doing a much better job than she did at the VMAs. That and her music is alot better than Duran Duran's and she's alot hotter, too.
I do remember the Drunken Slash moment, but I do not think that this show jumped at that time because I guarantee you that noboby saw that coming. Nowwadays, something like that would be staged. This show obviously jumped when top 40 music jumped, becoming nothing but manufactured performers like Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake who are just like the "Replicants " from the film "Blade Runner"...
The one problem that myself and a lot of people seem to have with 99% of music today is that the groups or the bands making it just do not have the credibility that the great bands of the past did..
Sure, there were some bad bands in the 80's, but at least they were actual bands that played instruments and performed live at times..
Now, people say that a person is talented because he "has good beats"...Hell, animal from "The Muppet Show" had good beats also, and he was just a muppet. I listen to a lot of music, and what I hear now is just plain bad. Likin Park sound like nothing but ***** game effects. I know people that think that the leader of Korn is some genius....I found that absolutely hilarious!!!!!...Thank God Radiohead are around, because I believe that they are one of the only real bands out there...
I wonder what Frank Zappa would think of our times????

First of all, Nick Rhodes is one of the founding members of Duran Duran and without his keyboard mastery, they wouldn't have their signature sound. And he happens to be a very talented and extremely attractive man still in his late-40s.
Second of all, I wish none of the guys ever had to leave. For the record, I miss Andy terribly and I wish he stayed because Duran Duran without one, or two, or three ect. of the original members is not Duran Duran to me.
Third of all, why are be so busy debating between Duran Duran and Britney Spears when we are supposed to be talking about when The American Music Awards jumped the shark? BTW, I love Duran Duran, but Britney's music is alot better and she's more fun to watch onstage. But that aside, I thought the show jumped the shark when Slash tumbled out onstage back in 1989/1990 and he was so drunk he could barely stand up and he kept belching and cussing into the microphone. Since then, it has been no holds barred.
BTW, I loved when Britney Spears hosted the show back in 2001, and I loved last year's show when she walked out onstage ressembling the old Britney again. I feel sorry for her and I wish she'd get help and that her CD did better on the charts because "Gimme More" and "Piece of Me" are better than anything else out there right now.
This year, the show was okay, but I could have done without The Jonas Brothers and "Highschool Musical".

duran duran's a great band, but i wish it was nick rhodes who left instead of andy taylor! as long as they keep john and simon, it's still duran duran!
The Amerian Music Awards have officially reached a new low, roping in has-beens like Duran Duran. Even when Britney showed up at last year's show, they could have given her more time, like maybe let her perform one of her songs, or something. She looked amazing and seemed to be in shape. The last good AMA was when Britney hosted. After that, it went downhill. All the newer acts suck and are not nearly as great as Britney. And maybe all you ladies out there love Duran Duran, but us dudes and the masses who buy music don't want to see a bunch of old farts trying to convince the world they're still sexy when you have Britney who is already sexy making great music.
