the guy below pretty much explained it all. this show never jumped.
Batman: The Animated Series is probably the best cartoon series created....EVER! It was amazing! The retro-animation look was great, the storylines were incredibly well-done, and the score was perfection!
I also loved how dark, gritty, and true to the source-material it was. Usually cartoons "dumb things down" and change things, whereas Batman: TAS was incredibly faitful to the comics. I loved how there were so many layers to the show; a five year old could enjoy it along with his teenaged siblings and along with their parents. It was actually incredibly grown-up for a cartoon (drug use, sexism, domestic abuse, feminism, mental illness were all issues dealt with). I applaud everyone involved with this cartoon for not "dumbing it down". Well Done! Although I didn't care for the animation changes once the series moved to the WB, the series was still good. All in all, I would say Batman: The ANimated Series NEVER JUMPED!
The Batman animated series on FOX and CBS both rocked for different reasons--the 1970s version stayed true to the campy series a decade earlier, though the addition of Batmite was definitely unnecessary; by contrast, the FOX animated series was darker and grittier and should not have been allowed to jump ship to the WB. I do not like the current Batman series, though, since it is not faithful to any of the previous incarnations.

Perhaps there should be a Batman movie in which the Caped Crusader meets the Super Jetsons--with Jane emulating Batman himself--only a lot sexier than Batgirl could have ever hoped! Perhaps a plot could be incorporated--one in which the Riddler, Joker, Penguin, Catwoman, Poison Ivy and the other villains escape into the future-- joining forces with Knuckles Nuclear, Mugsy Megaton and Dr. Radius--now that would be quite scary for both Batman and the Super Jetsons!
THE BEST CARTOON EVER PRODUCED PERIOD. KEVIN CONROY SHOULD GET A CAMEO IN THE NEW MOVIE.WISH THEY WOULD MAKE MORE.
"While it neverQUITE JTS, the change in the look of the show deffinately hurt it, however, even at its worse, this show KICKS "The BATMAN"'s( The crappy current series , where Bruce Wayne looks like Jackie Chan!!!?? {Wtf?} ) @$$!!!!!!!!!!"

...Can you speak english please?
Batman:TAS was the second best thing happened to Batman since The Dark Knight Returns and the mid 80's retooling of the DC Universe. Batman became a relic and a joke because of the TV show and the Superfriends. Batman became so weak that every Superfriend had to rescue Batman and Robin. And he was too happy and lost his true nature and don't get me started with every lame Bat gadget and Robin's horrible Holy This or That.
I liked how unlike most cartoons the villains weren't just one dimensional charicatures of good versus evil they were allowed to show their side of the story. For example Poison Ivy was an environmentalist who tooks things too far and Catwoman was an animal rights activist who went too far too. Clayface is the tragic result of an aging actor's attempts to retain his youthful appearance and Harley Quinn is involved in an abusive relationship with the Joker. Pretty deep for most cartoons of the time.
I was never a fan of this new batman and stopped watching after 2 episodes YEARS AGO.

Then 1 night ..I saw that boomerang was going to show the series from the first episode. I thought, great ..i'll give this show another chance...and guess what , it's great .

Sure it's different from the batman that we all grew up with (new voice, new look and new look villians) but it's a great show once you stop comparing it with the old batman.

Too bad the stupid boomerang network stops after "grundy's night" and then starts back to episode 1 because I'm hooked . I want to see every episode in order all the way up to season 5.

Looks like i'll have to download episodes after grundy's night ..but this new batman is a winner in my book . Sorry I never gave it a chance years ago .
I'm going to say "never jumped" because I consider the WB version to be a different series. Yeah I know the creators disagree with that, but the WB show had different major characters and everything. It's sort of like "The Practice" morphing into "Boston Legal."

Although a few episodes were weak it had some of the most classic tragedy in TV. By classic tragedy I mean the character having a fatal flaw that leads them to ruin or madness or both. Mostly this is true of the villains, but Batman is in many ways a tragic figure in himself. His single-minded pursuit in many ways leaves him isolated and neurotic. He has nightmares of having let down his parents, Harvey Dent, and possibly just endangering everyone he ever cared about. Kind of heavy stuff for a cartoon series or maybe any series.
Other episodes that were 'bad' ideas were "The Underdwellers," "P.O.V.," and "I've Got Batman in My Basement."

The movie versions of the show were also no good.
That "Mudslide" episode was a really 'MORONIC' idea.
Never jumped! Every Bruce Timm cartoon from Batman: TAS to Justice League Unlimited was pure gold. BTW they're showing Superman & Batman on Toon Disney now every weeknight.
I enjoyed this show. I thought it depicted the Dark Knight version of Batman extremely well. I also enjoyed the placement of the art-deco 1940s style into the modern world. People had all sorts of high-tech gadgets and were driving around in Packards.
I hated the new Robin. I hated the angst of the original Robin.
This show was the best thing ever on tv. I as the devoted batman fan i am must honestly say, when the show became the adventures of batman and robin it was a lot less dark and it lost a lot of its edge. It became a lot more saturday morning, so to speak. Ive seen in a season 2 episode someone selling crack. If that isnt grounds for the grittiest cartoon ever i dont know what is.
