Pretty flat characters. Grandpa was always a blowhard, Sarah was always sweet but awkward, Buddy was always clueless yet funny, and Jamie was one of the snottiest teenage girls ever on TV. If they wanted to improve the show, they should have sent her off to a faraway boarding school(the Grandpa could have had academy connections from his days in the military). Man I could not stand Nicole Eggert! Then Charles's mom had to step in with the combination new character/new business endeavor attempt to save the show. Didn't work!
I always thought this show was silly.Never inderstood why the kids needed a live in babysitter? Man I use to stay home by myself at the age 9.
Yeah The Powells made no since either. There Grandfather was living with them why could'nt he take care of the kids while the mom was off working?
I tell you I would of be embarresed if my parents hired a lived in babysitter.

The show improved when the new family moved in and then became one of my favorite shows of all time when Willie Aames' character evolved and he became more and more stupid.
Jim, that comment you placed was quite funny.
However, I must respectfully disagree. Although I admit to be a bit biased in this. My father has a first-cousin who directed a few episodes. I don't know her very well, and I certainly never met the cast or anything. Also, I was extremely young when this show first aired. I don't remember the first run. I only remember watching it at about 17:00 or so on weekdays after school. So there is probably a nostalgia bias in here too. My mom likes it a lot too. I got her the first season DVD.
Baio sucked on Happy Days, but I thought he did okay here. The first season was probably a lot better than what followed, for many of the reasons people have mentioned. In the first season, both parents worked and the oldest kid was only 14, so it made sense that they would have a housekeeper. In syndication, when the oldest was in high school and they had a healthy grandfather living in the house, it did stretch credibility quite a bit. Also, to correct Jim, Buddy was not always an "idiot." In the first season, he was Chachi's somewhat sleazy best friend, who certainly wasn't Einstein, but he wasn't Frank Burns either. It was only in syndication that he became one of the stupidest characters in TV history. I actually thought "stupid Buddy" was funny at times.
Sometimes, this show could be serious. There was an episode in the first season where a cousin of Lila's wants to take her to a bar to celebrate her 14th birthday. Charles has a confrontation with the cousin, which I felt was very well acted. Who knew Chachi could act?
Someone mentioned something about interwoven plots being especially well done on this show. That doesn't sound too far off. I'll have to look at season 2 more to fully comment on that. I guess that's all for now.

Great friggin' show, though I'm probably just speaking out of nostalgia and bias. And this is because I was insanely in love with Nicole Eggert, and I mean literally. Yeah, it sounds goofy I know, but damn - she is a gift from God. That face was truly incomparable. But now I lean more toward Josie Davis (as Sarah), who was such a sweetheart and had a better personality. Why on earth did Josie cut that incredible mane of golden hair?! Sigh.
Bad acting aside, it still made me laugh my tail off. How hilarious was Buddy? One of the greatest 'moron' characters of all time. James Callahan was great as Mr. Powell. "Doorbell". His insults to Buddy were totally classic. Even Adam had his moments. But Sandra Kerns was totally unmemorable. Which leaves us with Charles himself. While I'm not the biggest Scott Baio fan in the world, I thought he was great on this show.
Classic sitcom.

Both Scott Baio and Willie Aames were major hunks of the day!!! I don't know which one was the sexiest!! Personally, I liked Willie's arms and chest the best, while Scott won hands down in the hands department!!!
Charles In Charge had jumped the shark on several occassions. I disagree that the show jumped when the Pembrookes left because the Pembrookes were a very uninteresting family. The Powells were 100 times more interesting than the Pembrookes. Nicole Eggert is one fine actress and her character is more relatable to most teens and I can easily relate to her when I was a teenager. The show definitely jumped when ir was the final season because it ran out of ideas and when Charles became Chaz and married a slut named Tiffany. Nicole Eggert was the only saving grace of the show because the other characters were unrelatable.
The theme song is pornographic but then many women(and some men.)agree with its lyrics.Stupid show otherwise.
I thought it was a great show about how a gay man can work in a household and have his buddy around. It was one of the first openly gay programs and I thought it was great. I think they should've shown more about the relationship between charles and his "partner" buddy. Truly a pioneer in this genre. It was an early will and grace (jack and karen) way ahead of it's time. I always knew chachi was gay. Ayyyyy.
This show was so inane, I don't even remember any of it. Whoever thought up this mess should receive a patent for inventing the TV-induced lobotomy.
Chachi in Charge sucked on ice. It had neither the depth of Gilligan's Island nor the intelligence of The Munsters, and it was less humorous than Perry Mason reruns. This show was to TV what Etch-a-Sketch is to art. Did Scott Baio's mother have any kids that lived? Baio shouldn't quit his day job, which was probably as a proof reader for M&Ms - and he probably got fired from that job by finding too many W's. As an actor, he couldn't even hold a candle to Barney Rubble!
Then there's Willie Aames. Oh my God. What, his overacting on Eight is Enough wasn't bad enough, they had to dredge him up for this box office bomb? I don't mind that he played the role of an idiot, because he was perfect in that role! He could be himself.
Yes, Chachi in Charge JTS from day 1. I'm ashamed to say I saw this show more than once, but have been forgetting it every day for the last 15 years.
Peace.
