"Chopper One" was one of the last half-hour action series produced for network TV. It had a fair amonut of action, though I doubt that some of the things the pilots did to catch the perps (like knocking over fleeing suspects with the landing skids)was approved police procedure. It IS possible, though highly unlikely, that a kite could get caught in the air intake of a turbine engined chopper (Like "Chopper One" Bell Jet Ranger)and bring it down. I do fondly remember this show despite its short run.
This show appeared on our TV's in 1976, I think. As an 8 year old I thought it very cool. What does an 8 year old know about acting etc.. Even though it was only on for a short while I can trace my interest in flying back to that show becoming a commercial pilot myself a couple of years ago.
It really didn't get a chance to jump they only showed 6-8 episodes, the normal for a summer tryout. (I wonder if the guy in Greece is talking about the same show?) Featured Dirk (Battlescar Spastica) Benedict as the observer in a police helicopter but he and his pilot partner were bounced by the low ratings bug and was not renewed. This was teamed up with the also short lived Firehouse.
The first time I saw this show as in Athens, in syndication. It was so bad that I thought for sure it must have been a Greek production with out-of-sync sound. Then I recognized Dirk, and it all fell into place. I finally saw it in English a few years later, but prefer it in Greek.
Oh my god! I can't believe this show is even listed. My memories are as vague as yours. I just remember liking the show as a kid and thinking that Dirk Benedict was cool for saying "10-4 Chopper One." And yes, NBC would then say "Next, James Drury in Firehouse!" Of course you watched that so you could get to the 9:00pm show "Kung Fu." Now that was "Must See TV on Thursday" 25 years ahead of schedule!
Dirk Benedict before Battlestar Galactica. I never missed it or "Firehouse." Okay, so I was twelve, what did I know?
I can't believe anyone else can even remember this very short-lived show. All I remember is the one where the mechanic (school bus driver in "Duel") is involved in some kind of illegal activity. After 25 years I forgot who was even in the damn show. All I remember is the spinning chopper blades that made up the title. I guess it jumped on day 1. This show preceded a show called "Firehouse". That's how I can remember when it was on.
When the Police Helicopter gets caught up in a 17 cent kite and the pilots have to drive a squad car for the episode.
