This was not really a bad show, it was doomed from the start because they chose to title it "David Cassidy" Man Undercover. People were laughing about it and didn't take the show seriously. In the late 70's, Cassidy was still firmly entrenched in people's minds as Keith Partridge. He was typecast, and the public didn't take him seriously in this type of role. The show might have had a better chance if they had not used Cassidy's name in the shows title. But it was cool to see Cassidy in a totally different role, playing a cop and getting tough with the criminals. Cassidy did a pretty good job with this series which deserved a better fate. Some episodes of the series were better than others, but overall it was a pretty decent show. I have DVD's of all the episodes.
This show didn't jump, it wasn't on long enough to go bad. It didn't get worse, it rolled as an average show of the 70's. Come on, Keith Partridge trying to be a teenager, scamming on all the High School girls that look 20-something anyway. Straight looking guys that are big-time stoners. This show was like a Partridge Family Dragnet. I liked the show because I was 14 years old and I enjoyed checking out the High School girls. I always thought they would put a bullet in Cassidy's temple if they found out that he was a narc. I felt that there was a decent amount of suspense in each show. It was better than a lot of the other garbage on TV.
How many people remember the Saturday Night Live skit in which,"Fred Silverman, program executive,"said;"I can't figure out why David Cassidy-Man Undercover flopped. It was terrible,so it had to be a hit!Wait!I've got it!How about Donny Osmond-Man Undercover?"
JTS when NBC made its decision to call this atrocity “David Cassidy – Man Undercover,” which was ludicrous because Cassidy was the name of the actor, not the character he was portraying. The character was Dan Shay, an undercover officer, sort of a one-man Mod Squad. The only bright spot in this 10-episode mess was the casting of the always-wonderful Simon Oakland (“Kolchak: The Night Stalker," “Bullitt&rdquo
as Shay’s superior Sgt. Walt Abrams.
David Cassidy appeared in an episode of Police Story and was nominated for an Emmy Award for his out of character portrayal. With this success they decided to take that character and give him a series of his own. Not a bad idea. However, the powers that be, instead of making it a gritty cop show decided to turn it into "T.J. Hooker". And all the writing was second rate and boring.
It Should've been DAVE MADDEN-MAN UNDERCOVER. Reuben Kinkaid bustin' dope dealers and thugs every week, now that's must see TV!
How can a show possibly jump when you have a song by the GODZ - Ohio's premiere rock band? "Gotta keep a runnin, Gotta keep a runnin..." And guess what - David was runnin...
This show was just an excuse for Danny Bonnaducci to play a dealer that gets busted by another real-life doper.
Before the series was introduced, David Cassidy Man Undercover was done as an episode of Police Story, so in fact this show jumped BEFORE its premiere. As I recall, 27 year-old David played a teenager to infiltrate high schools to bust kids for smoking pot. Two things amazed the heck out of me. First, David was told he must never actually do any drugs, so the poor boy had to keep making excuses to his stoner "friends" (friends don't bust friends for doing drugs) to avoid taking a toke. The kids must have had some strong drugs indeed. Not only did they trust a druggie that kept avoiding taking drugs, but nobody ever said "Hey man, that's Keith Partridge!"
This show jumped the shark the second it got started because it Never had a chance to begin with. I think males between the ages of 17-50 would have felt more comfortable giving Hitler or Stalin another chance than giving Cassidy a chance to return to the small screen. That's too bad because this was not a bad effort all around. Strangely enough, about 5 yrs ago WGN out of Chicago aired all of the episodes during one summer which Never happens unless a show goes into syndication. This show never did due to the lack of episodes. Someone over at WGN must have liked it.
