I am in the midst of watching season 2 on DVD...I've watched through the third disc. I think the addition of Lila's character caused some jumping, as well as Dexter's "addiction". It's all Rita could think about, then he goes to a few meetings and she forgets about it.
I gave this show a chance. Season 2 finale where everything falls into place perfectly for him was lame.
I hope they catch this psycho. He kills the woman who saved his ass? His GF says it's no big deal her kids were taken?
I don't like this scumbag. How can you like this guy?
People who like this show are just weird.
Weirdos!!

I just finished the first two seasons. I don't think it has jumped at all. The only bad part of this show is the sister Deb. I can hardly stand to look at the screen when she comes on. Too bad it seems her character will be more involved in the new season.
After a spectacular near-flawless 1st season, the second season starts with a thud.
Truthfully, things started to go a bit bad with the last couple of episodes. And the last episode was really good but a bit of a mess, in my opinion.
I'm watching the 2nd season - 1st episode and I couldn't wait to come to JTS to find what other people said.
It's true that it's no longer following the books, or the formula which made it successful. The acting (except for the sister who overacts, it seems to me) is still good, but the storyline seems weaker. In fact, I no longer want to see the rest of the 2nd season.
Oh well. Guess I'll read wikipedia for updates if anything changes.

"then again you could say the show JTS in a way when it was broadcast on CBS, and CTV in Canada. no way this show should be on network tv, and those commercials on CTV during the SuperBowl were annoying as hell"
I see what you mean, definitely. But I have to admit- it was the first network ep that convinced me to get Season 1 on DVD- and I'm getting Season 2 as soon as it comes out. So yeah, it was mostly to reel in more people, but I see what you mean. Case in point?
HORRIBLE CENSORSHIP.
"I'm watchin you, mothalova."
I rest my case.
BETTER:
"I'm watching you."
But they had to put "mothalova".
Still, the original series? Hasn't jumped the shark yet, and I don't quite think adding Jimmy Smits to the cast is going to make it jump either. Can't wait for a third season.

From the wisperings I've heard, this show coudl jump the shark this season. Something about Dexter being possessed in the novel. sounds lame.

No , I don't agree with the two who think that Dexter 'jumped" in the first season. And I liked the cliff hanger implied to be addressed in 2nd season, when the girl friend found the shoe that the x lost when Dexter was engineering his reentry back into prison.
And now the Black cop suspects Dexter, but can't prove anything. Now will the sister learn from her fellow cop, will she believe him or her brother. Sounds like a good show starting next season. I wish the writers would reveal themselves and diologue with Dexter's fans. A well written drama is always better than any so called 'reality' show.

Sadly, after a near flawless first season, Dexter jumped the shark in two ways the second season: adding Lila and killing Doakes.
Lila violated what made the first season interesting: Dexter was the oddball in a millieu of boring (but not nice) people. His attempts to fit in actually made him more normal than normal people.
Lila was like something out of a soap opera, an over the top character dropped that made Dexter look like an out and out hero instead of morally ambiguous by comparison.
Dexter capturing, revealing himself to, and Lila killing Doakes was like Sam and Diane finally hooking up on Cheers. The one person who had the scent of is secret life was gone.
The only plot twist that is left to explore that would match the first season for Shakespearean depth is if his sister finds out he is a serial killer and how she chooses to react--will her devotion to him as her only family match his when he chose her over Biney, or will she put being a cop first?

I've only seen Dexter on CBS, but it looks great. I like that it's not the glossiest show on television with the most beautiful people created by surgeons.
There is a lot of subtext. The guy is a killer, but that's almost beside the point. It works for dramatic effect really well, but the real story is that Dexter knows he is different and disconnected from the people around him. He has a difficult time reading people's feelings and understanding their human impulses. It's really a story about alienation and disconnect from the world at large.
There's also the highly important theme of a person retaining control in order to not lose everything they have even if they may not entirely understand why those things, like friends and loved ones, are so important.

I find it interesting that CBS, in a scramble due to the writer's strike, put a show like this on...I also find it interesting that I enjoy watching a crime drama featuring "a serial killer with scruples" as opposed to, say, a "reality"-TV-type show where the players/gameshow contestants/models/actors/yuppies display absolutely no scruples at all...I don't suspect the show is meant to glorify serial killers...but,for whatever reason, I find it more entertaining than crap like Survivor or Big Brother...it's just a show from a twisted point of view, which makes it entertaining...
I finally got to see Dexter via CBS. I can see why people talk about this show. It's sick yet fascinating at the same time. A awkward fellow that works in forensics by day and serial killer that only kills bad guys at night, trys to live as normal life as possible with an equally emotionally damaged girlfriend with her two kids. All his fellow co-workers rely on him, but one is highly suspicious of him. Very well written. The last ep was very far-fetched (Dex's long-lost brother also a serial killer, a.k.a. the Ice Truck Killer, that happens to be dating Dex's cop sister Deb), but the show was never dull. The only weak spot is Deb. She comes across like a needy kid dying to fit in to a exclusive club. Her taste in boyfriends (the amputee expert/Ice Truck Killer) doesn't help, either. Basicaly, you either love the show or hate it. At least it's something different from all the cop shows, doctor shows, and family sitcoms out there. I hope CBS airs the second season.
Perfect show for a country that celebrates serial killers as rock stars. (Not to mention puts children and the mentally ill to death.)I love the show a lot but read between the lines a bit. There's text there. OK, now be outraged, call me names....GO!
Dexter really is a hard sell. No one wants to LIKE a cereal killer; most decent people prefer to think of killers as fundamentally different than themselves. the reason Dexter wins a place in our hearts is through skillful writing, carefully planned direction, and masterfully executed acting. the show is a masterpiece simply because it takes pre-conceived ideas that people firmly hold and turns them on their ear. Dexter has never, and hopefully will never, jump.
