I think the show jumped after Season 1. Season 1 was great. Bo Hopkins evened things out as the struggling "wildcatter" going up against the established Blake Carrington. Bo's daughter annoyed me to no end but I think the first season had some reality and wasn't too soapy. But when Joan Collins entered it turned into a daytime soap opera, and just wasn't as good. I'm probably the only person who thinks Collins ruined the show, since she's the staple of "Dynasty", but oh well.
'Dynasty' jumped the shark for me, when Emma Samms replaced Pamela Sue Martin as Fallon. I remember hoping against hope that Ms. Martin would come back. Then one day they showed the portrait of Fallon in the background. Ms. Martin was no longer there and Emma Samms was.
Emma Samms and John James had no chemistry whatsoever. Jeff Colby never worked with any other character so it was like my favorite couple had left the show, even though they were still there.
Another thing: I didn't like the Adam/Dana relationship, or the revealation that Adam was not a Carrington. It made everything we'd seen thus far seem like a waste of time.
There were a few characters that I did like, but their storylines never seemed to go in the direction I would have hoped. I LOVED Sammy Jo from day one, but not enough was done with her, even when Heather Locklear joined the show permanently. Catherine Oxenberg was a real find! And I kind of wanted to see Amanda and Adam bond as brother and sister, kind of like Fallon and Steven did, since they both came into the family late.
Joan Collins rocked. I often wondered what the hell she had ever seen in Blake? I didn't like or hate Krystle.
But in the end, Pamela Sue Msrtin's leaving kind of ruined everything for me.

Dynasty was one of the best shows ever. I have fond memories of being a kid in high school and watching this for years. I'm glad it ended in '89 though just when the 80s ended. Whenever we remember the 1980s we think of the Reagan era, glitz, glamour, and Dynasty. This show will never be duplicated.
dynasty jumped the shark when dale robertson and bo hopkins left during the first season they were great as wildcatters they were missed by me
Jumped when Emma Samms replaced Pamela Sue Martin as Fallon. They were both such beauties but Fallon was a badass and PSM had that 'hellcat' or spitfire look about her, Emma Samms looked ladylike. And played it that way.
"Dynasty" was the best. The extremely beautiful Linda Evans and the gorgeous Joan Collins were superb in their roles that made the show fun.The fine and classy John Forsythe is a legend and was super perfect as the head of the Carrington dynasty. I'm proud to say "Dynasty" was my favorite of all time.
"Dynasty" was cool. What killed the show was not what some of you are claiming.ABC purposely moved the show
from Wednesday nights to Thursday nights against NBC's "Cheers".ABC knew it would be certain cancellation of a very expensive show. What gets me is that why is "Dynasty" released on
CBS home *****?

Are you people crazy?! Ya'll complain
about "Dynasty" not being real enough and being over the top!!! It's a freaking night time soap, it's supposed to be outrageous. "Dynasty" was the absolute #1 best night time soap ever in my opinion. I'm a strong believer that truth is stranger than fiction and "Dynasty" was not any more overboard than today's newspaper headlines. I LOVED the Moldavian Wedding Massacre cliffhanger even tho some of the cast thought it was a turd of an idea. Admit it!! It was shocking!! It was awesome!! That's what a soap is supposed to do. I have read articles that in forgein countries that wedding massacres DO happen!! See? "Dynasty" was ahead of its time. And the Krystle imposter, Rita, is NOT outlandish , either. That storyline was very suspenseful and fun with a climax of a catfight!! "DYNASTY" rocked prime time and knew when to quit when ABC cancelled it. It was like James Bond with family.

I loved watching Dynasty in the 80's, it was a family show for us. I just ordered the entire collection of all 9 seasons. After ordering it from thedvdplante.org before xmas, it was to be a gift, I never received it. Now, they have an announcement on their website that their supplier has pulled out, etc.,etc. I am in communication with someone there and it will supposedly come in the next few weeks. I kept the order the thedvdplanet.org. I also ordered the same set from dvddonkey.com. That set too, is to come i a few weeks. We shall see. After doing some research, these two companies in some people's opoinions, are bogus and others have said they are ok. I will keep you all posted as the reason for my writing this is to warn other fans about it. Especially since the networks say that they have only released seasons one and two so far. I will keep you posted on my deliveries! Thanks and Happy New Year!
I loved dunasty as an adult. When it was actually on TV, I didn't look at it,I was a kid. I fell in love with it, on Soap Net looking the re-runs.
I do admit, it was abi over the top and some of the storylines are unbelievable, but for the most oart, it was just entertainment.
The difference between the vians of both of the big "Ds", is that JR really didn't have anyone to match his vilainy but Alexis did. Namely, Dominique and Sable. It took Sable one season to do what Blake couldn't do in the 10 years the show was on air.
The conflict was greatest part of the show(catfights, dogfights, dirty business dealings, rich vs middle-class ...etc....)
The make up of an eighties PT soap was rich warring families who owned mega companies, with one major key villian (JR-Dallas, Alexis-Dynasty,Angela Channing-Falcon Crest, Abby-Knots Landing, for the 90s it was Amanda-Melrose Place)

Dynasty actually jumped BACK over the shark. The first season is such a slavish imitation of Dallas, it's almost embarrassing. You've got the squeaky-clean humble-beginnings new bride (Krystle), the working-class pawns (Matthew and Claudia), the deep-rooted rivalry (Blake and Matthew), etc. Both Dallas and Dynasty even had the same original title - Oil!
The second season, introducing Joan Collins as Alexis, is when Dynasty starts to take off. Abandoning its imitative beginnings, Dynasty became much campier than Dallas ever dreamed of being. Alexis's Glory Days of Hollywood attire (remember those HATS???), her Queen Diva demeanor, and her thin brown Cheroot cigarettes set the tone for the show from then on. Claudia's husband Matthew disappeared with their daughter and the working-class storylines were gone, replaced by a made-over, newly-glamorous Claudia who became involved in affairs and industrial espionage. Cat fights and splashy parties featuring Nolan Miller-costumed guests occurred virtually every episode. The Reagans were in the White House, and Glamour was King (or, more accurately in this case, Queen).
It all came to a shuddering climax with the infamous Moldavian Massacre. In the wake of the cultural phenomenon that was Charles and Di, Blake and Alexis's newly-discovered daughter Amanda had a whirlwind romance with a foreign prince. But their fairytale wedding was interrupted by terrorists who crashed through the windows of the cathedral and began mowing down the guests with machine-gun fire. The cliffhanger ending of the final episode of the fifth season featured the entire cast lying unconscious or dead in pools of blood.
When the opener of the sixth season revealed that only two very minor characters had been killed off, with all of the central characters receiving only the occasional scratch or bruise, it was inevitably a letdown. Dynasty got even goofier and further out of touch with reality in the episodes to come, and its audience dropped away. Though Fallon's disappearance at the beginning of season five was damaging, it was not until the Moldavian Massacre that the ratings for the show dropped precipitously. Dynasty's brief reign was over, and although the show limped along for another four years (!), the writing was on the wall.
Dynasty ended, fittingly, just as the '80s did...with a whimper, not a bang.

Dynasty was so realistic...ehem.It established three rules.Brunettes are all evil, blonds all good and then there's Sammy-Joe!There was also this freaky phenomena to come out of it.Why is Heather Locklear(whom I like!)still a big star?
The first couple of seasons were good, but then it started losing the narrative in between the lines. Perhaps because it somehow became more Reaganite as a show...it probably got loads of things cut out that were a little "liberal", I mean sexy Fallon became a nun...the gay son turned straight...censorship forces shows to jump the shark and become crappy.
