Lost interest after Michael Zaslow was fired. Roger Thorpe was the best soap villian (daytime or nighttime) EVER! The way the producers handled the situation was atroious. Showed a complete lack of class!!!
Guiding Light jumped the shark when Maureen Bauer was killed, in my opinion. This was around 1992. It simply was never as good after that.
This show "jumped" the day the late, great Beverlee McKinsey called it quits.
I've been an on-again/off-again watcher of the show for years...my mom and sisters all watched the show at 3pm on CBS so i was sort of backed into watching it because there was only one TV at the time and the majority ruled. There have been plenty of stories that have given the show a bad reputation and the storyline that fits the jump the shark are a few from fairly recent times.

One story involved Reva time traveling. I liked Ron Raines {Alan} involvement...he made it watchable when his segments were on but it was not a favorite story of mine.

Another storyline that left me clueless at times was the Carruthers story with Ed, Buzz, Alan, Billy, and Josh. Yes, at that time I was glad to see all of those character interacting with one another in a front burner story but the story had to do with all of them knowing each other years ago...and the fact that four of the five characters have been on the show since the early '80s, it just looked like a bizarre event.

See, the 1983 fisherman storyline with Eli Sims worked better because the main characters in that story were all away from Springfield. For those not familiar...the 1983 fisherman story involved Annabelle Sims finding a roll of film and after the film was developed a picture surfaced showing Bill Bauer, Henry Chamblerlain, Tom Reardon, Brandon Spaulding, and H.B Lewis all on a fishing trip. A woman was in the picture with them and it was revealed to be Annabelle's mother...who her husband, Eli, had murdered.

To make a long story short, that 1983 story is a classic. The men that figured prominently in that story had not been a part of the show's land-scape for years and years...you could make the argument that Bill Bauer was but his character was written on and off the show so many times that it was believable that he got wrapped up with the other men on the fishing trip and kept quiet about it.

The Carruthers story with Ed, Billy, Josh, Alan, and Buzz was bonkers because of the character histories of each of them. Billy and Buzz were always at Alan's throat for the things he did...Josh in later years was always tangling with Alan as well. Ed's history with Alan is mostly contained in the early '80s during Ed's marriage to Rita. All of these character traits and story lines that had taken place on the show were in effect rendered pointless because it turns out everyone knew each other from years ago...Alan, Ed, Josh, Billy, and Buzz...when you approach the story from that view point then you can see how deranged the story was.
I like the new format!!!

And I heard that now that GL has been getting close to cancellation they are wrapping up the current stories to make room for new ones and they are going to try and listen to the fans more now. I think they proved that with Jeffeva. Now they need to put Mallet back with Dinah!!!!!
Guiding Light jumped the shark when Maureen Bauer was killed off. 1989-1993 was the best period and the show has never recovered from the loss.
I think it would really be cool if the past 2 or 3 years on that show starting with Tammy's death turns out to be one long dream sequence. Tammy could awake from a coma after being hit and that would give a show a chance to start over from scratch to clear up this messed they made of the show.
I watched GL for a long time. A LOOOOOONG time. Like Kelly and Morgan and Nola long time. Capice?

But not now. I cannot stand the new "cinema verite" style of filming. It's like they're trying to make GL look like Survivor. Just a totally "off" feel for an afternoon soap.

Shark...jumped.
i had the biggest crush on krista tessurau, the original mindy, when i was a teenager.she was hot in a bikini in scenes at the cabin during the summer episodes.
i hope that they stick bill and lizzie back to together for good cause they are like meant for each other and the spaulding enterprises and the house belong to the spauldings. also i miss the marah and tony love story i can't believe they had marah leave and killed off tony that makes me mad.
i stopped watching this show because
they took off all the good characters.
like Danny, Michelle, Eden, Tony, Maura, Gus, Harley, etc. the people from around that time. it was sooo good. now i dont even know whats happening.
I agree about the Reva issue. Not sure what is up with her looks but it's bad and it's not just the HDTV like some actors like to blame. The new filming techniques make me dizzy and the fact that it's in one house? What is that?
I was home sick and happened to fid Guiding Light - the first time I've watched it since the mid 80s. Wow! I could not belive all the actors that are STILL on this show.

What in hell happened to Kim Zimmer (Reva)?? I mean, I know she's 20 years older and all, but jeez, go on a diet or something. When Reva was first introduced circa 1983, she was portrayed as this outgoing, attractive vamp. Now she is just downright haggard looking.
The show jumped in 1981. That was the year that Rita Stapleton (one of the greatest soap heroines ever) left, and around the time the Bauers started to be de-emphasized as the central family on the show. Also, Sara McEntire, Adam Thorpe and a lot of other core characters were written out around '81 or so, just so they could make more room for talentless 21-year olds who couldn't act.
New camera work/lighting stinks. Trying for faux-film noir? Ugh. Can't watch anymore. The Harley-Gus mess helps too. Josh a minister? Naaaaah. And have they decided yet whether or not to Bring Back Philip?
