Good show, good animation and music.
I remember this show as a cut way above the standard Sat. morning fare of the time. I later read a collection of the original comic strips and the story line in this cartoon followed the strips very closely. Spoiled me on Scrappy Doo forever!
This was the best cartoon ever for a short time. Every episode ended with a cliffhanger (something studios, for some retarded reason, are afraid to end their cartoons with now.) Every other week, the local station would replace it with mid-south wrestling, just to drive me a little more toward the abyss of madness. When they made the dragon the main character, I began looking forward to seeing Junk Yard Dog vs. Mr. Wrestling 2. Ugh.
This version of "Flash Gordon" was truly the best, and some of the finest animation ever seen on Saturday mornings. I had a huge crush on Dale Arden! Ming's voice was great, real sinister-sounding. The dragon was kinda dumb, but didn't keep me from tuning in! Too bad the studio execs wouldn't keep it going. Is this show in syndication???
Initially, The New Adventures of Flash Gordon was intended to be a prime time series. Instead, it went to kidvid. The animation and character designs were probably the best in Filmation Studio's entire history. The heroes were modeled after creator/illustrator Alex Raymond's visuals. The stories were exciting, suspenseful and serialized. They were easily the best version of the Flash Gordon legend ever done. Unfortunately, the series had low ratings so the powers that be decided to dumb down this series by adding a stupid little dragon. At this point, the series went down the proverbial toilet. (By the way, the animated series after this one produced in the '90s made Flash a teenager. This was one of the worst pieces of garbage ever made.)
