Ed Begley, Jr. tried VERY hard to make this work and it's a shame because it had been a good movie but the TV show had no imagination whatsoever. I mean, one could count on at least one scene from the movie being recreated WORD-FOR-WORD in each episode! The one thing they DID do differently than the movie was drop the younger gambler son's existence and, thus, ignore the movie's ending which touched upon his late middle-aged conservative parents suddenly having to act as the parents of the son's biracial toddler who'd never known real parenting before. Would they have tried to do a better job raising their grandson than they'd done their troubled adult children- while caring for the elderly great-grandmother ? This intriguing premise brought up by the movie was totally ignored by the series and it's too bad!
I thought this was kinda cute, though not on par with the movie. I especially liked Max Slade in this, who had a different role in the movie. He has a sweet little lisp.
Never jumped! This show was great. The episode where Michael thinks about smoking pot was the best episode about drugs any show ever did. It wasn't preachy like some shows or corny like others.
It jumped the shark as soon as it started. Everything seemed really corny and none of the actors could act. The way Roger would keep daydreaming got boring very quick. It never had a chance.
unfortunately I remember this show. The theme song was that old Randy Newman song "smile" or something. On the first episode they followed the opening credits with that old Crest commercial that used the same song! Proof positive that the show was an attempt to cash in.
Anyone remember this-another unsuccessful attempt to adopt a movie to a TV series? It aired the same season as "Ferris Bueller". Ed Begley Jr. was in Steve Martin's role, and Leonardo DiCaprio was in this one a year before "Growing Pains." And David Arquette played Keanu Reaves's character from the film. Arquette had previously been in the TV version of "The Outsiders," also unsuccessful. Three small kids form the film reprised their roles for TV, but I don't think much has been heard from them since. This one definitely jumped from day one.
