The third season
Day One
Special Guest Star (Frankie Avalon)

Shark Bytes
The show jumped the shark when the show moved from Brooklyn Heights and the Lanes bought a condo in Miami and adopted that little Guatemalan girl Mitzi. She never had any of the complicated hairdos that Patty and Cathy had.
Susan I hope you are aware just like I am aware that hopefully the whole world will be aware that Youtube has some TPDS episodes so its kind of like a mini marathon there are some good ones especially the one with Chad and Jeremy that was an inspiration of me making my first ever record but not singing-poetry its recorded but not yet released only I didn't have to do a demo with poetry I just did an album of 31 tracks or poems but the key point is TPDS some episodes on Youtube that makes me happy close as we get to TV
I have tried writing to Patty Duke directly and am awaiting an answer. I know Lifetime Movie Network had it at one time. I agree it is a classic and should be released on DVD. Could be a right of ownership situation that is keeping it off TV.
Despite what a lot of people think, this show is definitely something that SHOULD be out on DVD. Its a great show and it taught a lot of valuable life lessons in a fun and contemporary way that kids these days would do VERY good to actually learn.
Anna Marie "Patty" Duke-Pearce is one of the most gifted actresses I've ever seen, and I thoroughly enjoy all her work. This show has a particularly special place in my heart. It was a shining spot in my youth, to say the least.
I won't go into rehashing all the wonderful praise and observations that have been made concerning this show. We all know that they are true and accurate, with the occasional exception of asshats without half the sense to pour piss out of a boot in a rainstorm. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, and if they don't share mine, that's fine, they don't have to.
However, I do want to address the "comment" made by the person that identifies themselves as Dwayne Goettel. That was completely uncalled for, and more, it was childish and utterly stupid. You have no idea of any of the problems the lady has or had in her life, nor would you probably understand them if you did have an idea. Such comments are on the brink of bigotry in their offensiveness, and I'm amazed they allowed you to post such nonsense on a public forum such as this. My advice to you is very simple, grow up. Otherwise, that "kindly and endearing attitude" of yours is going to be returned to you a thousandfold. If you're such a staunch believer in karma, you'd know that already. Karma has a way of biting people in the ass rather hard that are so blatantly proud of their stupidity. When it bites you, I would expect it'll bite quite hard. Pardon me if I do a little enjoying of karmic justice when it does.
Other than people like this, I agree with most of the comments made here. I hope they keep this show alive for generations to come, so people can learn what real entertainment actually was.

I recently bought this - my fav show when I was 10 in '63)- on DVD-R from someone on www.ioffer.com who taped it off of Nick at Nite and transferred it to DVD-R. Quality of the 104 episodes is great and the entire series I got for only $20 +$6 postage.
I just finished watching the last DVD (21 in all)two weeks ago (started watching couple eps a night in April when I bought the DVD-Rs). There are other sellers on there for this show at much more reasonable prices than any other website. I got tired of waiting for it to be released professionally and when a friend of mine saw Patty in a play last year he asked about the show on DVD and she said she knew of no plans. But I have them now in glorious black and white with Chad & Jeremy, Sal Mineo, Sammy David Jr, and all the other grest guest stars. Her stand-in who's back of head we saw as Cathy or Patty, went on to be on the soap As The World Turns, but now is a eye doctor in New Jersey.

It never jumped! I double ditto what Janet said too! Teenage life was much simpler back then! And they had a lot more direction to explore with this show. This and 'Gidget' with Sally Field are two of my favorite shows.
I won't waste time repeating what "Janet" said... ditto ditto ditto. Too bad she didn't escape the Rosses sooner. Patty Duke is just an excellent actress, and I like it when some TV special puts her on as the Mom or Grandma or something. It doesn't happen often enough.
They SHOULD show this on Nickelodeon or somewhere, because it would be a real eye opener for young people to see what the 60's were actually like for most of us. They weren't perfect, but young teenage girls, and boys, were certainly a lot safer back then. Ah the lack of tattoos, body piercing, ugly makeup, trash talk, and every kind of unspeakable raunch and lifestyle in general. It was nice... trust me anyone under the age of 35... it was very nice, and relatively decent.
Makes one think, actually, that there is a hidden agenda with all the crime and blood and guts, and witch type shows, when a new "Patty Duke" type show would be just as easy or easier to produce.

hi....the patty duke show is shown here in chicago on channel 23 wwme-tv......on sundays at 2:30 pm....the show should be on dvd too ....mgm owns the rights
This show is a blast to watch today. Patty was excellent in the two roles. What a great flashback to the wonderful 1960's!I wish that it would be released on DVD.
show so horrid it was enjoyable that karma came back @ her in real life & was the cause of her suicide attempt[s]
Patty DUke...sigh...I love the early 60s Jack Kennedy/Hairspray hairdo and the theme song did NOT have ANY of those gosh darn lyrics or themes (Lesbo) occur..Brookyln Heights, Cathy, Patty, cousins. NOTHING OFFENSIVE about that song.
Too bad Patty didn't get to do this for Walt Disney (who used "Technicolor" TV--Technicolor being in quotes here as his TV product was really, ironically, in Eastmancolour.). Plus her issues in the mid 1960s when this and Walt himself checked out would be too much. Anyway she got United Artists and Chrislaw Producitons.

Never jumped - and I agree - it should be on DVD!
Production for Season 3 was not moved from NYC to Hollywood because of Sidney Sheldon, it was an attempt by Duke's managers, John and Ethel Ross, to curtail the romance between their client (more accurately, their meal ticket) Patty Duke, and an assistant director of the show, Harry Falk (who wound up moving to LA and marrying her, anyway.) The Rosses had controlled Duke's private life like jailers from her earliest days acting during the Golden Age of TV, trying to keep her looking and acting younger than her real age to prolong their control of her, and her salary. They dictated every aspect of her life, claiming she'd be nowhere without them, and so intimidated Patty and her family that they got away with their abusive treatment for years. When Patty reached her late teens and fell in love with Harry, though, she reached a breaking point, threw caution to the wind rebelled against the Rosses and ended her life with them. She came darn close to ending her life, period, but you can (and should) read about that in her autobiography, Call Me Anna, if you have not already.
The show ended after three seasons because United Artists would not foot the bill for the next season to be in color. It's true that by then Duke was very bored with the show and thus it might have not gone on much longer anyhow, but the real cancellation reason was just the economics of B&W vs. color.
The show had room to grow in other directions, if it had continued. It had a great cast, and the characters could have inspired some very good late-60's storylines. I'm guessing that Patty would have become something of a hippie idealist, but would also marry Richard too young and bring him to live in the Lane house instead of a home of their own. Cathy would attend a prestigious college, and would find the counter-culture a challege to her conservative ways. Ross might have taken up the slack on the teenage storyline front, perhaps with some less-than-wise advice from his new brother-in-law. Natalie would take to women's lib like a duck to water, and Poppo would try to stay serene amongst all the change.
