Brilliant show. Wish there was a third season, but the production costs were so high, I can understand why HBO pulled the plug on it. So many good actors. So much good writing. I think my favorite aspect was the whole mother daughter and mother son relationships. British-American shows should be created more often because of this show.
So great. I wish the show had a third season, but perhaps it was best that it didn't, as it would have probably jumped the shark. As it stands, it's a beautiful look at a very different way of life.
Bring back ROME!!! The 1st season was the best.Would love to watch at least ten more years of it. Wish the executives behind the cancellation were fired. I miss it so much. Must be some way.
Never Jumped. The best drama to emerge from the HBO stable. Consistantly engaging with great sets, costumes and background effects. Realistic to the period with graet extensions into historical fiction. Pity there will be no third series. "True Roman bread for true Romans".
I must disagree with Sid,the series didn't posit that Titus and Lucius were the impetus for everything that happened. They were simply present at a lot of important events, the way many anonymous soldiers were. They only "changed history"by carrying out the orders of big shots like Octavian and Antony. The series was imagining how the great events may have influenced the lives of the little people.
Another triumph for HBO. Rome was an wonderful experience, great acting, great story based on historical fact.
Also, to those that disliked the fact that the show was played out through the eyes of two who didn't actually exist, I disagree that it was a problem. It gave us a view of actual historical figures from a different perspective, from a more common perspective, as if we were alive in that time to view them ourselves. But if that still bothers you than please remember that HBO did not invent this style of story telling...you didn't think that there really was a Johnny Tremain did you?

This show was great! From the acting to the stories, one of the best shows ever! All you people that said the show jumped when Pullo and Vorenas became to much a part of "real" history are fools. First of all, since the story takes place about 2000 years ago, nobody alive today really knows the real history. For all we know, some of the "true" historical figures could've been "5 billion times" (the way way one poster put it) LESS important then we thought they were. Secondly, this is entertainment, not a history lesson. Don't take it so seriously.
"Rome" has to be one of the most well written shows in TV history. Yes, it did dance a bit on going overboard on some subject matter, but it does give one a small taste of what life was like in Ancient Rome. (Yes, there were beautiful buildings and statues, but there was also a dark and dirty underside to it complete with grafitti.)
My only complaint with the show is that is that it doesn't have any characters that have a semi-happy and normal life. It would help if for nothing more than cleansing the palate after yet another tragedy hits Vorenus, Pullo, etc.
Anyone else notice Octavian's mother getting fatter in Season 2?

My last word on this crap...
If there was another season of this horsecr@p I'm sure we would find out that Pullo and Veronus were the anticedents of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, JFK, Mohatma Ghandi, Osama bin Laden, Martin Luther King, Hitler, and every other important character in history...
And that's when it became cr@p. When it took two interesting "Joe Schmoes" in Rome and made them 5 billion times more important than they (historically) originally were.
The original idea of the series, The higher class vs the lower class during one of the most interesting times in history (Julius Caesar's Rome) was destroyed in season two when Pullo and Veronus joined the upper class.
And if you don't see taht, you're a moron.

ROME is one of the best tv shows I've seen in years, and I had to buy the dvds since I don't have cable. It was a strong series with excellent historical accuracy but also great acting and stories. The weaving of Pollo and Verenus was a great technique, and how they interacted with the power struggle in Rome, which was made more human by this insertion, and showing it as a war of families as well as mere politics. I especially liked the battle between Atia and Servilla, and in season two the rise of Octavian was really enlightening. Some complained about the new actor, but they had to show Octavian age, and although I missed Max Perkis, his replacement was just as good. The interplay of him and Atia and Octavia was also well-crafted. The series never lost touch with the characters. I had my only problem with Cleopatra. Somehow, I never saw her as the ditz first seen, and I think Alexandria would have been more hellenized than still remaining Egyptian (a lot of Greeks on the make for 300 years). A never really good story of Cleopatra has not been told, but I still liked the way it was handled on ROME. The series ended very well, too. There were historical liberties taken, but they were necessary to tell the story. What mattered was the characters remain true. The ending, with Atia looking to one side was priceless, as was Pollo taking Caesarion into the crowded streets and saying 'about your father...' ROME was shark free and chock full of dolphins.
God I am so sick of hearing about historical acuracy on shows like Rome and Deadwood. It s not all supposed to be real.Thats why they call it entertainment. The only litmus test for these shows should be whether they are good. You want real go outside and watch you neighbor mow the lawn. See how f@#king entertaining that is.Both shows are some of the best work on tv. Even when they slump a little they are still better than almost anything on the networks.
aaron...
Julius Caeser was murdered by his trusted allies, that's a historically undisputed fact.
Octavian suceeded him, and he was young when he did...again, historical fact.
But again, the first season, which seperated the upper and lower classes while marginally intertwining them was intersting, and infintitely better than season two which forcibly pushed Titus and Vorenus from the lower class into the upper class. Suddenly they were Colonel MacBraggert from Underdog. They were magically and mysteriously the key cog in everything that happened in Rome over a 10 year period! They were the fathers of every figure head born in that period, they were the impetus for the reforming of a democratic parliament, and the birth of Christian religion in Rome. I was actually shocked that Lucius and Veronus weren't Ghengis and Khublai Khan. I'm pretty sure if they had a season 3 Veronus would've hidden in France and renamed himself Charlamagne 1000 years later while Lucious became Pope Paul the 1st.

Ok, the Homosexual Box Office remarks are pretty far off. Like it or not, sexual encounters between men were commonplace during Roman Era. It was something that also took place more among the higher class than the plebians. But g4ngr4p3 wasn't uncommon, and the romans aren't the type of "clean" people we are in America today. So just because he was on the toilet really meant nothing.
