I remember watching Square Pegs when it was originally broadcast and then a few years ago when it was shown for a short while on TV Land (to be fair with only one season it would be hard to include it in any type of regular lineup for the network). I think it was a fairly good show and does represent the early 80's well. I wouldn't go as far as to call it a classic, but it obviously had enough impact to warrant fans of the show (so the term cult classic probably does apply).
It was a spring board for alot of the actors on the show who would go on to have successful careers beyond the show. Sadly , Merritt Butrick would die not many years after the show, but not before he would go on to play Captain Kirk's son in 2 Star Trek movies.
I think the show would have been better if it had stayed grounded a little closer to reality. For the most part it did ,but I remember watching the Pac-Man addiction episode on dvd and seeing the scene where Marshall is mimicking the video game joystick movements while in some sort of trance and thinking it seemed like something from Saved By the Bell ( now there is a true piece of crap show). Luckly they didn't go that far in too many episodes and had it survived longer I would have hoped it would have improved even more.
While it is not ,imo , a true classic , it is worth watching for those of us who like to stroll down memory lane and for those who weren't growing up in the 80's it does offer a peak into what it might have been like to be a teenager then (even if it is not the most accurate )

amy was a woofer because they put padding and fake braces on her. sex and the city girl though i agree was a woofer with that horse face. and yeah you're right some popular people werent perfect looking, just confident. and i thought i came up with something original when i noticed tracy nelson resembled jerry seinfeld in drag, then learned from a seinhead that she was in an episode of seinfeld playing a girl that george dates that looks like jerry.
James,
We'll agree to disagree about Amy Linker & SJP--both woofers, IMO, but different tastes make the world go round!
Jamie Gertz--you are on the money.
As for your statement: The popular people on the other hand are plain looking...This makes no sense, the popular being dogs and the nerds being gorgeous. Shouldn't it be the other way around?...I'm not sure I agree. This seems pretty much the way high school is (or at least mine was). Some kids, for whatever reason, get defined as "popular" and "hot" and everyone seems to agree. However, when you think about it later, you find yourself asking "why did I ever think SHE was cute?" and "Why didn't I run after her??"
Strange but true.

Amy Linker is one of the cutest girls ever, even with fake braces and padding it was really hard to believe that no guys would be crazy for that face. Guys do like a pretty face and boy did she have that. Sarah Jessica had great lovely eyes and a nice body under those clothes. The popular people on the other hand are plain looking ('cept the gorgeous Jami Gertz who isnt popular because the students hate her). This makes no sense, the popular being dogs and the nerds being goreous. Shouldn't it be the other way around?
I gotta tell you--back in the day, I enjoyed this show. I actually liked Devo; I thought they were hilarious (still do). Their "Satisfaction" on SNL was funnier than most of the crap Lorne Michaels tried to pass off as comedy ("Cheeseburger", yuck. Give it a rest).
Sarah Jessica was perfectly cast as a skinny, unpopular, dish rag. How she ever got to "Sex & the City" is still a mystery.

I don't know anyone can say this show jumped the shark. It wasn't on tv long enough to do that.
I liked the show and wish it had been on longer. Except for the episode with Devo. But then I always hated them. Devo sucks.

Loved this show when I was a HS senior - I wanted it to last at least one more season. But if I saw it now, it might be excruciating.
Is it true Adam Ant was considered for a guest slot? And that Jennifer D. was supposed to have a crush on him?
At least SJP's come a long way since ...
RIP Merritt Butrick!

I wanted to like this show...I really did. But it just wasn't very good. Vaudeville-style humor and an excruciating laugh track do not a classic make.
But hey...credit where it's due: they did use good music.

Ya know what would be really cool? If TVLAND would rerun episodes of Square Pegs back to back with That 80s Show. I think the contrast in shows made 20 years apart referencing the same era would just be cool and interesting.
