JUMPED, big time... I loved that show... but in season 4... dear lord what happened!!

They edged out the FDNY stories... the Cruz stories were insane... The whole faith, cruz and Bosco shooting at each other... The Mann line... the Russian mob crap.

The first two season were the BEST... three was good... but after that... whatever. So dissapointing!
I have to say it never jumped - though I hated how self righteous Faith was - always - and that the FDNY storylines became so few once Kim, Jimmy and Doc left. But I would watch Jason Wiles read the phonebook and thought this was one of the best shows ever to air on TV. It had some weaker moments but "jumping the shark" - never! And those of you complaining about the 9/11 storylines - it was refreshing to see a show telling the story so honestly - the fact that Molly Price's husband was FDNY and was involved in consulting on those shows proves they wanted to do them with respect and honesty!
Well, I am sad to see so many Cruz haters on here. I actually liked her character a lot. The show needed a villianess, as it had plenty of jerks over the years. Plus it gave Faith someone to spar with, giving Molly Price some of her best stories. And her chemistry with Bosco was off the charts. I wanted them together so bad. (and to the people who want Bosco with Faith? ewww, that's gross, she thought of him as one of her kids!)

I HATED that they killed both Bobby and Alex, but more so Alex. I loved her character, she was so fun and lighthearted when they brought her in and we saw her evolve into a responsible, caring woman. I always felt more of an attachment to her than to Kim.

As much as I loved the cops, I think the show jumped the shark when it changed from being a show about cops/medics/firefighters to just being about cops with the medics and firefighters making appearences here and there. Sully was terrific, but killing off his wife was a huge JTS moment. Why couldn't they have just faded Tatiana to the background and have her make an appearence every so often? They didn't have to kill her off.

I suppose the show became a little unrealistic when they killed of so many of the characters. And there was absolutely NO need to kill Alex in the way they did. That was just vicious and I cried my eyes out on that episode. When she called out," How am I doing?" and her legs were beside her head, I couldn't believe she was still alive. I didn't like that the person to comfort her was Carlos, who was one of my least favorite characters. They should have had Ty or Kim comfort her as she died.
I loved the show and there were many GREAT episodes. My chioce as to when they jumped the shark can not really be pinpointed to one episode. It used to be "I do not miss a show" but once they lost the originality of having all three different levels of service Fire, EMS and Police and became just another "cop" show is when I didn't care if I missed an episode or not. I hope all seasons come on dvd so I can atleast see the final episode that I missed.
cruz handles her bizzzznesss with her fine azzz
What they did to Doc's character kind of aggravated me. I voted for it as jumping, but that might be overstating it. Still he was one of the better characters at one time, so having him go completely wacko and shoot a guy seemed a bit over-the-top. I could see suicide or good-old-fashion madness, but the situation with him was weird and I think it was implausible.
Third Watch was probably the best cop/crime show ever - great characters and great writing almost until the end. The episode where Bobby assisted that lady in dying was tremendous and I still get goosebumps when I hear that Nick Drake song. And the show really picked up steam once they cut back a little on the fire-fighting action episodes which could have gotten repetetive quickly. Anyway, the show JTS not by its own accord - it got screwed by a crappy timeslot and was pre-empted constantly for sports and other bologna. Indeed I didn't know a single other person (other than my wife) that watched it or even knew when it was on - even through degrees of separation. We were convinced we were the only people watching that kick-butt show! The fact that it stuck around so long even when finally put on the death watch of Friday nights is testament to its faithful following and great production value. I think the producers were given fair warning of the end of the show and the storylines and characters had to all be wrapped up awkwardly hence the less than stellar last season. The final episode was cheese-bag but I liked that it gave the fans closure. I think if the show started off in a better time maybe on a better night it could have musterd a bigger audience - the writers and producers could have taken it at least a few more seasons.
I loved this show when it premiered. Never missed an episode for nothing. After they killed Bobby though, it started to come undone. My favorite character was Ty. He was so hot and not on screen nearly enough for me. Sully was an honest depiction of a cop. He "new" his city and the people in it. He had a strenght of character that was comforting. His life was his job and outside of that, he was a lost and lonely man. His relationship with Tatiana was so sweeet. When they killed her, he was never really the same. The show JTS for me when Doc started coming unhinged. JTS for good when they killed off Alex in such a horrible way. Her ties to 911 were really touching. She showed people alot of how the family members of the heroes of that horrible day had to deal with the tatters of their lives. I missed so many episodes that when I catch them on reruns I'm still lost. Oh, and Kim and Bobby ending up together again and pregnant? GTFOH. It totally ruined Kim's character. Her strength in being a single Mom who maintains a civil relationship with her EX-husband (a pig who cheated on her by screwing her own sister)was the focal point of the first season. Yes, Eddie was a hot hero with some serious character flaws but his courage/adreneline junky needs were representative of how he fails in all the other areas of his life. Those "other areas" were his relationship with Kim and how he treated her as a women. Moving it to Fridays was a death sentence for this show. It kicked off hot and simmered lost for too long before it finally burned out.
Moving it to Friday was for sure the kiss of death for this show. It lost some major players which I think hurt it (Jimmy, Doc, Bobby, Kimmie) but I still think it was one of the best shows on TV. Bosco was the very BEST!!!!!! He was such a "butt" on the outside but he had a heart of gold. I want the entire 6 Seasons on DVD. I absolutely HATED the ending. It was a stupid ending. I just don't think the writers put any thought in to it.
definitely jumped when cruz came on board. show should not have been cancelled, cruz should have been cancelled, probably would have saved the show. sully was the best. should bring it out on DVD.
I'm not entirely sure why it was canceled. My husband is a fireman, and I started watching it with him after we met. He thought that it was pretty realistic, and never missed an episode. I thought the ending was really stupid, though. Sometimes when shows are canceled unexpectedly, they do this type of ending, which is what happened to 3rd Watch. In fact, I don't think they knew it was getting canceled until the last minute.
Jump the shark?

Warning signs were there after More Monsters (sixth season premiere)...Bosco's in a coma, Faith's a detective, Sully & Ty are broken up, that little whiney boy Finney comes along...then they do a 180 on the death of Ty Sr (if you watched from the beginning, you'll know)...it finally jumped the shark when they started focusing on Faith, forgetting about EMS and FDNY and delved into terrorists (ok, we've seen it before, move along), not-so-scary vampires, Cruz's lukemia (yawwnnnn)...it was like they put a whole bunch of stuff in a blender and hoped to hell it worked. Oh yeah, most of it didn't. I love TW, and probably will for a long time, but I'm glad it was cancelled when it was, otherwise it would've been extremely UNWATCHABLE for this fan; which is sad since it was a great cast--especially Skipp Sudduth and Coby Bell.
Am gonna give this one a pass and say it never jumped, if only because I came into the series about mid-way through its run and ended up really enjoying it. Agreed that the post-9/11 shows got a little too involved with the personal lives of a few characters to the exclusion of many others. All the warning signs of cancellation were there (departures of longtime characters, Bosco being in a coma for the better part of a season and WAY too much Sgt.Cruz/Tia Texada). In retrospect, it may have ended at just the right time, because it was on the way up the ramp when it left the air. Timing is everything.
Jumped when Cruz join the cast
