The classic 1940s Woody Woodpecker cartoons were cool, but when Woody changed his laugh and appearance, it went downhill. It got worse when DIC Animation attempted a resurrection of The Woody Woodpecker Show with lame two-minute segments in and out of commercials, complete with recycled Hanna-Barbera sound effects thrown in for good measure.
Thank goodness Filmation didn't have the chance to resurrect Woody Woodpecker like they did Tom & Jerry and Mighty Mouse--the company would have done a horrendous job with Woody like they did the other toons.

This show JTS. He was just funny like cartoons should be, not the crap they have tv today. Kids of today should watch Woody Woodpecker if they want to know what cartoons are really about. The best Chilly Willy cartoon is "The Legend of Rockabye Point." Rockabye baby in the treetop, when the boughs breaks the cradle will fall and down will come baby cradle and all. Do you remember the one cartoon (not a Woody Woodpecker) called SHHHHHHHH!!. Now Mr. Twiddle, be careful or you'll explode. I got the Woody Woodpecker cartoon on DVD. I hope they keep coming out with more cartoons from the 60's.
when woody hosts his niece and nephew (?) knothead and splinter--also at about this time his voice was sort of cutened up and the cartoons went all wimpy.
Never jumped (although like most 'toons, the new ones weren't quite as good as the originals). The best was THE WOODY WOODPECKER POLKA! When the walrus takes a bite out of that pineapple (or ham) face--what a riot!! Another great was when he wanted to take a bath and destroyed the house getting his dime back! And that one with the full-figured female bird--hilarious! Everywhere he ran, she was behind every corner! (Once she hiked up her skirt and coyly said "Cheesecake?") As for Andy Panda, he was good mostly for little kids, but I liked the one with the evil weed trying to strangle that poor daisy. To the person who called him the f-word with the double g's: you have some rotten karma coming your way, for you are evil, but you knew that.
Same ol' story with so many cartoons. It was more fun to be a kid when playground equipment was hazardous and there were no seat belts in the back seat so you and your siblings could wrestle during trips. And the old, more psychologically unstable versions of characters like Woody and Daffy. Favorite has got to be the taxidermist one "money...women..." and the one with the cement layer: "nice and smooth, just...like...glass. NOW GET TO WORK!!!" Oh yeah. The one with the fat bird that tempts Woody to her house with food and then tries to jump him was positively alarming to me as a child. Also the sadistic green apple dream that Andy Panda had, where he gets strapped into a chair and force-fed green apples by a machine!
Woody never JTS! The old classics are hilarious. Buzz Buzzard and Chilly Willy kicked ass! Do all cartoon characters have to be heroes? Hell no!! I like Woody's attitude. Look at all the shitty cartoons they have nowadays. Poor kids! I'm glad I grew up when cartoons were actually enjoyable to watch. If I had to enter adulthood with the crap they have now, I would be wearing pig skin as a mask and living in a run-down farmhouse somewhere in ultra-rural Texas, with my chainsaw and meat-hooks.
Chilly Willy the Penguin is one of the best characters ever to grace the small screen! That episode where Willy had the fight with the lighthouse operator made me laugh harder than I have ever laughed before.
Woody Woodpecker J.T.S. when Ben Hardaway died in 1957 and Woody was voiced by Grace Stafford, Walter Lantz's wife. Woody sounded a bit too cute with that new voice, his old voice sounds so much better, at least to me
I loved the Woody Woodpecker reruns they showed on TV around the `80s. I always thought Woody was hilarious. As for his name being perverted, I'm sure every 12 year old in the world has heard that joke already.
Woody Woodpecker is a True Classic. He deserves the same recognition that a certain "Waskilly Wabbit" gets. When I was a kid, this was my absolute favorite, and Popeye. They showed back to back at one point on what is now Fox5. How can people put this show down so harshly. The characters are great...Buzz Buzzard? Wally Walrus? Dapper Denver Dooley? The Grim Reaper? Smedley??? How can you hate Smedley? And classic episodes...the one I think that is probably the most popular and funniest...the going over the falls in the barrel one! AYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!! And the taxidermist one..."we are going to stuff zee wooood pecka" The problem I have with Woody is...Where the hell is he??? He has been on hiatus since God knows when. And to the person who commented on his name being perverted...I think your the one who's perverted. Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha...hahahahahahahahaha
OK, I say Day One, but that really is a misnomer. Woody Woodpecker is the best old cartoon ever made. Much funny that that wimp Bugs Bunny (though I like BB as well). Why? Because as Seinfeld said (and I said way before Seinfeld), Woody was the instigator. He caused the trouble just for the sake of being a pain in the ass. That was great. I am torn as to which Woody was better. The crazy one voiced by Mel Blanc (actually Blanc didn't do that many. Woody writer Ben Hardaway did most of the 'crazy' Woodys) or the Grace Stafford. The originals were more crazy, which I like, but the newer ones had some better stories. Niagra Falls in a barrel. Woody getting swindled out of his money. Many Gabby Gators were pretty funny as well. And one of the best single cartoons ever which appears on later Woodys though not starring him, is Crazy Mixed Up Pup where the ambulance driver mixes up the human and dog plasmas. However, Woody himself was Bugs Bunnified in the later shows. He rarely instigated anymore. But still, it was good because though he didn't always start the trouble, he certainly ended it. So why do I say it jumped Day One? Because the original Woodys were MOVIES, not a TV show. When Woody became a TV show it got REALLY bad. Check out some of the Western episodes. Those are just horrible. So the summarize, the Woody theatrical shorts came close, but never jumped. The original show jumped on day one. And the 1999 version jumped before it began.
