Absolutely classic trash T.V. I remember when Sandra Bernard was a contestant. Can't remember if she won though.
This was the biggest piece of trash on TV in the 70s! It was a waste of time...not even winning $2! (This isn't enough for bus fare in L.A......) and what's worse, is that it was NOT a real contest-it was FIXED!!! What a piece of crap!
This show never jumped. I always thought it was kind of funny and some of those chicks were really hot. Pity I never saw it until my family got the game show network.
When I grew up a bit and realized that $1.98 really isn’t the *fortune* I had thought it was when I began watching.
Burned in my (then 8 year old) brain as a child, this show jumped it when one contestant, during the "swimsuit" modeling segment had both breasts stuffed into a red, white & blue stars n' stripes, Uncle Sam style top hat . . . which constituted the entire top of her "suit". Can you imagine this woman now, Marlboro dangling from the corner of her tacky lips saying, "HEY YOU KIDS, LOOKY THERE'S YER GRAMMAW ON TV!!" YEEEEEEESH!
I think that the $1.98 Beauty Show JTS day one. All in all it was a funny show, but that host...ewww...Who in their right mind would hire Rip Taylor? One thing I have always wondered is how the "beauties" are feeling having Rip hug all over them!...I wouldn't be able to handle it...But I guess for your 15 minutes of fame...
Did anyone ever see this show? It was on in the late 70's early 80's. It was basically a spoof on beauty pageants. They would have all these obese, heinous women parading around in pageant wear. Then, at the end, one would win. She would be awarded with a bunch of old vegetables and weeds, and of course, $1.98 in prize money. Very un pc, but I am sorry, it was pure magic. What a classic!
Never jumped. My idea of great television is giving me an experience I'll never have in real life. Chuck Barris productions always were so campy and creative that the results were faciniating. Even if you hated a show like this, you still watched it. WE NEED MORE FUN TELEVISION!!!! HELP US OUT CHUCK!!!!!!
Chuck Barris following his success with the Gong Show scores again!!!....The contestants while reflecting middle America, satirized and skewered the beauty industry who by that time was in the wholesale selling business to the middle class or the so called silent majority. The beauty (not to make a pun) of the whole thing is if I remember correctly is either Revlon or Maybelline always bought time on Barris' Productions. Never jumped, Barris was the Shark
Rip Taylor was the host of this show. I love it for the fact that this could never be produced again. Fat women in bikinis prancing on stage for a $1.98 check and a bunch of carrots (instead of roses). How can you not love it!!
I still remember the haunting lyrics to that lovely theme song. This show is a testament to the most noble attributes of the human spirit.
this show. a camp classic, quite possibly worse than pink ladies and jeff. i don't they both were pretty bad. i am scarred. i saw the both as a child and now that i think about it, i don't think any of the contestants were really women at all.
