Linda Lavin could not sing her way out of a paper bag if she had to! The "jazzy" crap she added to the theme song reminded me of someone saying to her "Yes, you are very, very talented" while crossing their fingers behind there back. I got so I couldn't listen to the theme song cause it sucked. This show jumped when they decided to let her sing more regularly. I heard that it was a contractual agreement - no kidding!
"The Robot That Wore Pink" was TV at its lowest point. This episode purely sucked. The 'actor' that played the robot was nothing more than a street-person wrapped up in tinfoil...OMG what a travesty of a show...I'm not into censorship or anything like that, but can we get this show banned, please?
You know Alice was sooo bad that even ION pulled it after only a month or so. Linda, honey, let's face it...you're not a good singe-and I'm being very, very kind.
Oh...my...God! I can't believe how many of you think this show was great.

I was forced to watch this turd when I was 16 and thought it was inane; I saw it in re-runs two days ago...my opinion remains unchanged.
This show wasn't as good as it was when Flo was on. The other two were good, but did not attain the popularity that Flo had. Another thing. Why was Flo always saying kiss my grits? Because those screw asses at CBS (Colombian Broadcasting Society) did not allow Kiss my ass at that time on TV.
They never should have made this show. The movie that inspired it was a great piece of work and then to have this garbage made out of it was an insult. Linda Lavin's nasally singing was like listening to fingernails scraping across a chalkboard. The only worthwhile characters were Mel, Flo and Vera. This show jumped the shark by not giving Philip McKeon enough airtime. Why was he even there? He was always sent to his room.
Hey "Alice Rocks": Alice was never EVER considered in the same league as "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" even at its peak around the 1979/80 season. The MTM Show won scores of Emmy awards (did Alice even win one? I doubt it.) The sophisticated writing of the MTM show versus the "corny jokes" of Alice are no comparison. In fact, any episode after the departure of Flo is reason enough not to bother watching, particularly the godawful finale where Alice is finally discovered by some COUNTRY(?!) music star who apparently has a fetish for 50-year old waitresses that sing show tunes.
Jumped when Flo left. I believe that the season after Flo left was the one when Linda Lavin and Mel's mom belted out "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy"....

Jumped back towards the end. I thought that the robot episode and especially the one when the wrecking ball went through the diner were pretty good..I remember Vic Tayback being really funny in those episodes...
Seriously, are you all 10 years old? Apparently, none of you have seen any other the other brilliant shows that aired roughly the same time Alice did, namely Rhonda, Barney Miller, Mary Tyler Moore etc. All of them had the same type of plot lines. Linda Lavin did a fantastic job on that show of representing what it was like to be a single, working mom, struggling to make ends meet while weeding out all the looser men that tried to hit on her. If y'all didn't take that from the show and were only watching it for the corny jokes, then turn it off and go back to watching SouthPark.
i really enjoy this amazingly enjoyable sitcom. me and my boyfriend love al8ice and everyone at mels diner!!!!!
Alice was a wonderful concept at first-then it went to the writers heads (and Linda Lavin's, too) that the show was actually quality TV (an oxymoron?) Well, it wasn't-it was the Kleenex of television-watch it once, maybe twice, vomit, and don't watch it ever again. It was pure punishment to hear Linda Lavin sing-I mean, she had a powerful voice, but don't confuse that with having to hold a note or have range. She simply sucked at that and she looked and acted kindof bitchy, too. The "plots" were insulting to even a 10 year-old's intelligence. Awful awful writing, even worse acting, although Vic Taybeck and Beth Howland were decent. Ugh, please make this show never appear again-ever!
I used to watch reruns of the early seasons as a kid. I always stopped watching when the Flo episodes ended, as did most of North America.

If there's anything worse than the acting and writing, it's the editing done by ION to force additional commercial breaks into the show. They basically cut off the show in the middle of dialogue in order to run more Drew Carey promos. Oh well...If I had to edit this show, I probably wouldn't pay much attention to it either.
Regarding Clevergirl's comments..you're SO right! I couldn't have expressed myself any better! This show is terrible and I, too, remember watching it as a young kid in the 70's. Were we that dumb back then that this stuff passed as entertainment? Wow! When I watch it now on ION, Its kind of like slowing down to see a horrible accident on the roadway...but this entire series, except for ~maybe~ a few very early episodes is an American tragedy. One question, though..how can I get the last 22 minutes of my life back after wasting it on this show?
Alice jumped the shark when Flo left, but it was fairly intolerable even before that. As a kid, my mom used to watch the show and I found it craptastic even then. It's actually very comforting to know that I'm not the only one who found Linda Lavin insufferable and her constant need to sing (badly) all the time highly annoying. I don't think any of us will know what horrible things we did to deserve hearing Linda Lavin sing at the drop of a hat.
I've been reading the comments posted about "Alice" and some of them are quite funny. I remember watching the show as a kid and liking it. So I've been watching the reruns on ION and I too can not believe this series ran for 9 years. Everything about the show is dreadful - the acting, plotlines, punchlines - it's all such an insult. I haven't cracked a smile once. In fact, I usually switch the channel a few mintues into the program. But I have a sick fascination with something so terrible. And the singing...Linda Lavin should be arrested for crimes against humanity. I love the episode where Alice and the gang are in jail with Martha Raye and to help pass the time Martha suggests they sing "The Lullaby of Broadway"! Worse than water boarding.
