Went downhill after both the original writer left -- apparently the producers felt the series was too 'complicated and intellectual". At the same time, the character 'Rev. Ben" left (for unrelated reasons.) The final straw, imho, was when Tier left.

Could have been a good show in spite of the fact that Kevin Sorbo was in it, lol.
The last episode sucked, I mean geeze, the Abyss is suddenly dead and nobody is worrying about the Magog or the Nietzschean anymore? Oh well, you can't expect all sci-fi series to make sense. after all at some point some idiot cares more about ratings than the story making sense. That being said, I was surprised that it didn't suck as much as I thought it would. I mean even Star Trek is better than Andromeda comparably but it was still interesting up to the last dull episode.

Still, I wish they could make a show that stays true to its self all the way through the series to the bitter end without having to worry about bean counters hijacking the show.
worse show EVER. i swear i can't even watch an entire episode without being insulted at how bad the plot is. terrible. firefly, sg1, atlantis, and bsg are 10 000 times better than this show at their worst. i'm embarassed that andromeda is still on tv.
After obsessing over how awful the ending was and how annoying Kevin Sorbo and Doyle were in the last episode (I woke up the morning after watching the last episode of Andromeda thinking I had to rewatch Red Sonya--and realized it was just a bad dream brought on by the bad ending of Andromeda)
I found the coda by Robert Wolfe and read the last scene he had for Andromeda where purple trance is back talking with Harper (not one mention of Dylan Skulking in the shadows---Dylan just became creepy to me in season 5) Wolfe's ending was much more satisfying, and sad. I hope when the writers strike is resolved that actors will have less ability to influence what writers do. Kevin Sorbo ruined this show. I wish they had killed him off, Robert Wolfe would have been able to reconcile him going away. If Brighette Nielson (sp)(Red Sonya) + Kevin Sorbo + Doyle + (a resurrected Sheena the Movie with the same actress/she also played a charlies angel) were all brought together, the lack of creativity they would produce would .... create a black hole (create your top 10 here)
Needless to say, I will endeavor never to watch anything that they are affiliated with....in order to do my part in saving the universe.
By the way in the previous post, immasculate is usually emasculate I changed the e to im because I mean Tyr...it's not really plausible is it? All it did was make him hotter in other words.
Ok bad costumes, bad makeup, bad hair, season 1 was fun, I loved the cute trance. Tyr was HOT. Dylan was not objectionable and was ok.
Season 2. Makeup better, Trance more interesting, Harper whiny, Tyr HOT.
Season 3 Makeup better, not sure what happened with Bem. Would have liked to have seen more done with Trance, she became a Warrior woman and kinda stopped saying lines, I think she couldn't move underneath her hair, possibly her neck could have snapped. Missed old trance. Perseids became interesting, decided I liked Romy. Tyr HOT. Dylan begins to take over more of the show and his acting range is bored to condescending.
Season 4. What happened with Tyr's hair! Rhade makes sense as a replacement as the one scene from the first show where he dies takes up 30% of the entire 5 seasons in replay time, so feel as if he is already a regular crew member. He gets the "kick me" sign from Harper and is immasculated immediately (fears of female fans thinking he is HOT? fear that he will be sexier than Dylan?) He's pretty cute anyhow, and has more range than Dylan. I like Beka by now, and Trance lost some of the weight in her hair so is beginning to run around.
I really liked the Cliffhanger from this season A LOT.
Season 5 mmms
Somehow in the route of ages, all abilities of everyone in the universe is grafted under Dylan, whenever a character displays an interesting characteristic unique to them, Dylan assumes it and has the power of the star Avatar, has robots following him at will, has unique genetic markers, etc. Kevin Sorbo should never be allowed to influence writers in an ensemble cast, unless it is an ensemble cast of one. Doyle was awful, I call her FastForward. As soon as I saw her I fastforwarded. I missed Romy, I began to theorize that she must have anchored Dylan/Sorbo's multiple personality disorder. Rhade is HOT. I miss Harper whining. Beka as mother of all Nietschiens is a good way to try and immasculate a character that competes with Sorbo I suppose, but Rhade is still hotter. Doyle taking so much control over getting Romy back online really was annoying. Where was Harper? I suppose following Dylan around Doyle took on his multiple (I have the power of everyoneelse) personality disorder. By the end she is also psychic, she also goes from being Harper to Dylan to independent after Romy to Dylan's slave again. It was pretty hard to observe, and extremely annoying. I think they wanted to rip off other Sci Fi series but without the writing staff on this last season. The end is the worst of any series I have ever seen, Sci Fi or otherwise. So much potential, sigh.
Other than the last portion (getting stranded on the planet), this was great. They should have replaced the one girl actor which was not available to continue as the ship's computer. I recall turning the television set off during some fool bar scene in which one character was wallowing in extended self-grief on that god-awful planet which the writers stuck the Andromeda & the crew. At least, they got off the planet & restored the Commonwealth in the last episode, thereby wrapping everything ( including all the loose plot - threads ) up neatly.
When the ships computer Rommey got those two huge silicon processing units.
Years ago, the rock group King Missile had a musical recitative name Mystical Dung [euphemised to let this be posted---we have nukes are we _children_?]. I think of it every time a science-fiction show jumps the shark by leaving an at least ostensibly naturalistic universe (things work according to laws, wishing don't make it so, no werewolves) and make an end run for Importance by going for The Mystical "Dung". I think it should be a category on this site, further euphemised to Mystical Bullstuff if need be. As the above would imply, I think the show superselachisalted the moment it became dedicated to Mystical "Dung", as opposed to merely dabbling in it occasionally. Season Four?
This is my favorite show of all time! (Admittedly the last season sucked, but what're you gonna do...?)
Probably at the beginning the suits took over creative control and killed the project. "Let's insert some medocrity so we can sell tampons." Happens all the time in the real world and in Hollywood. That's my take.
So it was doomed from the start. It couldn't decide whether to appeal to 13-year olds or an older teenage crowd. So we get the dumb philsophy vs. that hideous tail on the token clown character. And the whiny stock tech smurf-dork channeling a midget Kramer who likes to surf on some planet was brutal.
It changed course so many times trying to find its voice that even the obviously aging Hercules couldn't keep it together. Not that aging is a bad thing, but kids (the target tv audience) get conditioned early on to think it is. Even the breast implant relief pitcher, the fulsome Brandy, couldn't save it. Perhaps, the awesome Traci Lords?
I'd have to say it was all of the psedoreligious metaphysical garbage which did it in for me.
You know what I'm talking about. Any problem that they run into..."Oooh! It's the ABYSS!"
And then they turned-down the Magog's scariness and turned-up the 'suck'.
The premise of the show was simply ridiculus. Like in every other show where some sort of ship ends up in the future and becomes the hope of humanity. Really after so much time the technologie would be antic and every enemy would have no problem to simply destroy it.
Having just bought season 4 & 5 on DVD and watched them over a week or so, season 5 did indded at times end up as the Kevin Sorbo show, when i got a bit fed up with Dylan always getting the girl...

Rhade was written as a bit of a wimp, not at all in the same vein as tyr.

The show started so well and did it seems go a little of course towards the end, having said all that i will miss it, knowing it will never come again.

and Doyle wasn't that bad, she was great to look at almost as great to look at as Beka.....

Sad to see it end, worse to see it go off towards the end...
It went downhill during seaseaon 3 if I remember it right, when they had suddely Dylan stand-alone crap and getting the girl in every single freaking episode (blah), sidelined and replace the main cast, 'completed' the commowealth and forgot the magog.
Not mentioning that they could not remember if they did or did not have other soldiers stationed on Andromeda or not.

Not sure which of the above choises it was, but I'm guessing it's the influence of the writers being fired, so I picked that one.
The last season was a joke, a very unfunny stupid joke.
