It was always a mediocre show but jumped over every shark in the open when the guys showed no guts and said they'd root for that human syringe Barry, "Big Head" Bonds not only to surpass Hammerin' Hank Aaron as the all time major league homerun champ, but endorsing the jamoke for Cooperstown as well. Leading the way in all this was Rob Dibble who I think has his lips still stuck on Bonds's big ol butt.
This show is the biggest waste of time and airspace ever created in the world of cable "sports" programming. Half of those people they have on would not have a legitimate job otherwise. What real sports fan relies on this for entertainment ?? Thus the title itself is a sham.
Best Damn is trying to jump back now. At least FOX realized what a huge mistake they were making having Tom Arnold's annoying personality as the host of the show. And trying to turn it into another "Tonight Show" clone was a mistake they fixed also. Bringing Chris Rose back seems to work, although he didn't seem to want to be back there at first. Now they have Tom where he should be, an occasional guest. The only thing I miss about Tom was the "things you don't say to..." bit.
This show is going to get CANCELED because of their new "look". i dont really understand why they changed the whole premise of the show. just having Tom And John is totally lame (even though i think both are really funny guys) i just really started to notice it being this way just after the great Johnny Carson died. are they some way paying a tribute to the great late nite performer or is this just a cheap plug to get rating. i will forbid myself from watching it now. good riddance best damn!
Chris was a good host and Tom was better in a reduced role on this show. I would bank on it being cancelled now because Tom is horrendous at the main host.
This show has been like a minor league to ESPN. By that I mean that all of its talent has moved up to ESPN. John Kruk is now on ESPN's Baseball Tonight and does well. Michael Irvin is on NFL Gameday (or whatever it's called). He's OK, but kind of annoying. Lisa Guerrero got the gig as a Monday Night Football sideline reporter and failed miserably. After one season she was history. I'm glad she failed. She was the most conceited woman, had fake breasts, and was too old to be hot. She also changed her last name to cash in on being a "minority." Last but not least, Steven A. Smith has moved on. He's a big NBA insider on ESPN these days. Funny thing, Bryan Cox was on ESPN too, but then went to BDSSP (I guess he was demoted). I used to like Best Damn Sports Show Period (mainly because of the guests). Chris Rose was smart, but kind of boring. Tom Arnold was annoying and was only funny once a week. John Salley brought nothing to the table. But on the other hand, Michael Irvin was funny when he was on there, and so was John Kruk. Why did they ever have Kevin Kennedy on there though? That guy was as dull as a doorknob. The show also had too many damn commercials. They had a good discussion going and then they went and cut to the commercial (which ruined what could have been a great show). The part at the end "things you would never say" was somewhat funny. If they had better writers and a better comedian than Tom Arnold, this show could have been much better.
With the removal of Chris Rose, we're being tortured to watch Tom Arnold hold the show down on his own. A true comedian would be better off hosting this show, with Arnold and Salley as sidekicks. Arnold's career precedes him. Nothing he's ever been a lead in has went anywhere. This show will slowly become the Worst Damn Sports Show Period.
I thought Chris Rose and Brian Cox were on Christmas vacation but it does appear that they may be gone permanently. I don't like the new format at all. I rather enjoyed the ensemble cast and revolving door of guest hosts (i.e DeMarco Farr, John Kruk, & B. Cox). It was fresh and entertaining. The new format looks like the same old, hum drum talk show & set. The focus now appears to be on Tom Arnold as a solo host and the celebrity guests rather than sports. I give it two thumbs down even with John Salley as his sidekick. I liked the raucous fun and stupid antics when Chris & B. Cox were there. The chemistry between Rose and Tom Arnold worked, because Tom needs a straight man to take the gay joke abuse,on his own though I can't see him doing much. Personally, I thought the show was better when Michael Rapaport, or any other TV or movie stars were there instead of Tom (I can't stand his sorry @ss anymore). About a week into the new format I just stopped watching it, it's not really about discussing sports anymore, it's just a sorry attempt at turning TBDSSP into a regular old talk show. The show is just plain boring now. I can get "boring" from a dozen other talk shows. Tom Arnold is a jittery, sarcastic, annoying, piece of **** while John Salley is a washed up basketball player, who thinks he's big time. I believe they fired Cox & Rose because they think the can get bigger ratings with Tom and John just being their pathetic, ignorant, selves. Nice going Fox Sports!
I'm afraid that TBDSSP has now official jumped the shark with the disappearance of Chris Rose, who had been with the show from the very beginning, & Brian Cox. It appears that the show as taken on a much different format (less about sports and more about Hollywood) than the one that we've grown familiar with during the past four years of the show's existence. TBDSSP now appears want to model itself after more traditional talk shows like "The Tonight Show" for instance. It's just Tom Arnold as the host and John Salley as Arnold's sidekick (or Ed McMahon to Arnold's Johnny Carson or Andy Ritcher to Arnold's Conan O'Brien). What made TBDSSP so fun was the loose, "anything goes" atmosphere. Now with the new "Arnold & Salley Only" format, the show has grown to become way too predictable and formulaic. Besides, someone like Tom Arnold is really a personality that could only be taking in doses. I'm sure that's one reason why he has had better success in supporting parts like "True Lies" or the first "Austin Powers" movie where has vehicles that had been centered more on him (i.e. "McHale's Navy", "The Stupids", and his various sitcoms) have been considered major flops.
My major problem with the show is that, Yes, these guys are basically has-been athletes, but they can be somewhat interesting and they do interface rather well at times with the guest Has-beens. Tom Arnold on the other hand, seems to be living off the reputation of being Roseanne's X-husband and that is most likely his best attribute. He is not funny (ever), and did anyone see his interview of Michel Moore after the fight on Thursday night, Dec. 9, 2004. Arnold has to be on some sort of drugs to be as twitchy and nervous acting as he is. I cannot stand to watch him shaking his legs back and forth on the show. Anyway, his interview was riddled with just pure stupidity. Even Michael Moore looked at him a couple of times with a quizzical look like "Where the hell is this jerk from?" Then of course he tried to throw in a couple of funnies that did not work at all. But you know what pisses me off the most. I completely bust my butt for $120,000 a year and have to give my estranged wife $32,000 right off the top - and pay the taxes on that. Tom Arnold probably has that kind of money for pocket change and WHY. Not funny, not good looking, night bright with any remarks, comes over as an idiot much of the time, has not even done an equitable acting job in the couple of movies he has been in. Life is just not fair!
This show jumped when they started putting more of an emphasis on Hollywood Celebrities and figures from the entertainment industry instead of Sports Figures. In fairness to Tom Arnold, Tom does a great job on this show. His role on a Sports show is much better than Dennis Miller's role was on Monday Night Football.
One of the primary reasons I watched the show was because of John Kruk. Hey. Don't get me wrong, I'm an athlete, played college sports and enjoyed seeing Kruk hit a home run in Dodger Stadium, playing for or against the San Diego Padres, I was sitting down the 1st base line, and the lefthander hit the damn ball well into the right field bullpen for a home run. That had to be about 15 or 20 years ago, yet that was my personal connection to the show. and to see him resurface on this pretty cool show, then disappear, was kind of suspect. I still tune in, but the show is changing all the time. I get my updates from the net, the papers or live I guess. Don't really tune in ....catching the same vibe, people come and people go. The show is not any better for me without Kruk.
Much to my surprise, this show is actually getting better. There's a new producer who toned down the sophomoric elements, and they do get some good guests. It flows much better now that there are no more updates (scores on the bottom are just fine, thank you) and Tom Arnold seems to have calmed down just enough. However, asking the eye candy of the moment to chose between a date with Brad Pitt and world peace is still painful to watch.
This show was D.O.A. Tom Arnold is a fool and the ultimate jock-sniffer.The ex-athletes are louts who were marginal "stars".John Kruk-a 250lb singles hitter-John Salley-ok on the Pistons, but a bench warmer after 1991 are the "big names" on this dreadful exercise in buffoonery.Tom Arnold is poison,How could the Fox Sports executives give this dud a green light?
John Kruk's exit was definitely the first and biggest jump. This guy had a great sense of humor and was a great foil for Tom Arnold plus he was a career .300 hitter who knew a little about the game. Next jump was the exit of Michael Irvin. I always thought Irvin was a complete dick-weed when he played for the Cowboys but he was a very entertaining, articulate and interesting host. The exit of Lisa Guerrero hurt just for the spank factor. The last jump is the retention of John Salley, does this guy have naked pictures of Fox executives, he is so boring, never makes me laugh and tries to dominate every interview.
