Sure there were things that weren't spot on, but I stuck around because I liked Hank (OK, Duchovny may have had something to do with that.) He's your friend who always seems to step in it, but keeps on keepin' on. You just have to shake your head and say, "what next, man?"
Just rented Disc 1 based on the "buzz." What a piece of juuuuunk. David Ducovny thinks he is just too adorable, and maybe he was 15 years ago. But to have all these women and young girls just falling all over him now is pretty hard to watch, let alone believe. Karen is just way too amused and charmed by his "wit", also. In reality she'd be rolling her eyes at his endless self-absorbed commentary and drunken musings. But the worst part of the show are the opening credits. Reminds me of the way Ben Stiller edited Winona Ryder's film in Reality Bites. SUUUUUUUUCK.
I think the finale was a dream sequence, lame and cliched, yes, but I think that would be better than the actually ending (keep in mind I only saw the last five minutes or so of the finale).
And to Dru- Mia stole Hank's manuscript. She didn't write it herself.
Overall I think the show is good. The relationship between Hank, Karen and Becca being my only real reason for watching (I seriously can't stand Charlie and his wife). I do think it tries to be shocking, but it's on Showtime, so what do you really expect?
This show has such heart, the heart of a good family show really. That's what sets it apart from others in my mind and will keep me coming back next season.

This show jumped when the writers decided to base the Duchovny character on Bill Hicks without giving any credit to Mr. Hicks or what he stood for.
I just saw season 1. The finale was horrible! How can they possibly think that people will fin interesting a new season where the family is reunified? The good thing of the show was the isolationist, decadent, self-distructing lifestyle of Henk. And now? What's gonna happen? Another happy famlily show? NO. There won't be any more tension in the show. What a disappointment. Until episode 11 I just wanted to be like Henk
The shark was jumped during the battle of the bands at the daughter's school. That was the worst I've ever seen. Horrifically bad and totally out of left field.
Anyone else remember the first time this show was on and it was called "Dream On?" C'mon! The 2 shows are virtually identical. Anyone else notice that Showtime, HBO, and whatever other premiem network are replacing their movie showing opportunities with a lot of blink and you'll miss them sitcoms, of which only a handful are well done or interesting?
I'll admit this show is very clever and the writing is smart and funny too. Although it recently became evident to me that Duchovnny's character Hank seems to be suspiciously similar to Michael Douglas' character Grady in the film "Wonderboys," that is beside the point right now. This show jumped the shark when Mia, all of a sudden, writes what seems to be unanimously referred to on the show as one of the greatest novels of all time. It just doesn't seem at all believable to me that an average high school student would be able to do something like that. I also was not a big fan of the battle of the bands scene with Becca rocking out as the lead singer of her own band. Too much. I like the show, but I lost a lot of interest upon these two plot devices. It's just too much for me.
There is no way they are going to solve the main conflict in the show with Hank getting his Ex back and riding happily into the sunset with his family on the first season finale. It's not real. He dreams a lot in the show. It didn't happen. The show is fantastic. Duchovny plays an amazing character. Love the writing. Best show on TV. Didn't even come close to jumping.
Sadly, I feel the shark jumped in the finale. What is left to do? Hank's main wellspring of angst and bad behavior (the love of his life leaving him, with their daughter) has apparently been resolved ... what's left? They tied up all the loose ends except his novel, which he has apparently let go ("I think I'll be a teacher") ... Season Two? Happy, boring teacher Hank turning down passes from underage girls, more of the teen angst of his daughter, blah whatever.
Great show, great cast, great writing ... I just feel they've painted themselves into a corner.

The Season Finale:
This show has proved it's ability to take all the main characters on the show and give them a full life in the very 1st but short season.
Hank is madly in love with his ex who was supposed to marry Bill; the D Bag. Who would've even thought that AFTER they said their I dos that Hank's love would have jumped in the car with him and their daughter to run away together? I sure didn't.
Was this a dream like the ones he had in this episode or was it real is the question we are left to ponder until next season.
I will be there when Hank's world opens up again next season. What did you think about the finale?

You people jumped because of shock value or over the edge in this series when the name says it all; Californication is NOT just a song by the Red Hot Chili Peppers people.
This show gave me the edge I need and I too consider it one of my favorite shows on TV.
I will so miss Hank and all the cliffhangers I'm sure we'll be left with. Ducovney is brilliant in this show and I see the behavior on each side of the table with the character he is in love with still, the Mother of his Daughter.
I just pray she doesn't marry the guy that is so wrong. They give you hope that maybe in this screwed up world even after a relationship is over that maybe just maybe in their own screwed up way they can work it out.
I'm in and not jumping.
