Maybe the most schizophrenic show in the history of television. It was almost always funny but what show had this many cast changes and writer changes in such a short time. The problem with the last season was once again brand new writers. Ellen was never loyal to the writers and costars that made the show a success. I don't feel that bad for her that her show was canceled. Although, it should be noted that she was canceled even though she had better ratings than Spin City which was renewed.
Love Ellen DeGeneris.
Perfectly happy she is gay.
Hated the soapbox episodes of Ellen.
Please, one or the other. If you want to be accepted for your sexuality and be thought of as normal, don't jump up on a podium and shout about what makes you different.

Just so everyone knows, this Ellen is referring to the sitcom of the 90's, NOT her talk show that is on the air now. So, her "dancing to sexy back every episode" isn't what we're looking for. Thanks.
Man, I tell you, Ellen's disarming goofiness made this show worth checking out. I started watching and found myself fantasizing about her-then when she "came out", she ditched her easy-going humor and the appeal of her show (and half of her personal appeal)disappeared. No more beating off furiously in the shower to her. Nowadays,I am glad her talk show is doing well, and although I no longer "think" of her in "that" way, she is still a cutie.
uhhhhhh,,,..i think the "dancing" is getting to be ""EXPECTED" on every show now......soooooooooooooo ..when that formula ends....so will the show....(she is getting tired of that, i can tell)
Ellen jumped twice, and when I say "jumped", she cartwheeled. First was after season one, a very enjoyable show with likeable characters. Looked forward to season two, only to find cast changes, and DeGeneres' bloated ego changing the title to "Ellen" (does anyone remember the old Mickey Rooney sitcom from the early 60s? Mickey took a ration of you-know-what for naming it "Mickey" and at least he was an established star). Second hurdle over Jaws was the "I'm gay, as if nobody knew" episode. I knew she was gay at least 3 years earlier. And, as many have commented, it became Ellen's gay soapbox. Check out the reruns, and see if she goes 5 minutes without saying "gay" or "lesbian". Now, she has her talk show, where she thinks she's the hottest thing around. Good Grief!

The show was fine until "every episode" was about Ellen being a lesbian. We get it already.
Ellen Dengenerous is funny. I remember watching her routines on television. She was one of the few comedians who made me laugh. I enjoyed her for the sake of her. Just be funny, not preachy.

I agree with eveyone so far who has said that the coming out episode was fine (albeit, with a few too many Very Special Guests). It's that after she did come out, everything was about her being gay. I'm gay. Some of my friends are gay. But our gayness is neither the sole basis for our friendship, nor the sole topic of our conversation. And having the large lady welcome her to "The Family" was just awful. Lesbianism is merely finding other women sexually attractive. Not some freakin' sorority.
As a gay person I have to say I stopped watching the show when it became a political rant for gay rights. It wasn't even funny. Another good idea down the toilet for the sake of pontificating. Won't Hollywood ever learn? What idiots!
Come, now, don't blame the coming-out episode. I didn't really get the cousin, as soon as he came in. "He used to be a doctor, but his rage fits cost him his carrer" is not exactly comedy material. Also, it seems they did lots of episodes with Ellen mispronouncing somobody's name as a recurring joke. Why is that should be funny, I'll never know. She should take an approach similar to Seinfeld's, and transplant her stand-up material to the plots.
I think the beginning of this show jumping the shark is when Ellen came out of the closet. I was about 14 years old when that happened, and I didn't have a problem with her being gay. At all. As a matter of fact, most of the people I talked to didn't really care that she was gay either. It was the fact that after she came out, her life seemed to revolve around that. You can't expect a mostly straight audience to understand that. To a point, a gay relationship is no different than a straight one, but it's still not in touch with the general audience. I remember when Ellen started dating women...it just seemed like everything went so fast on the show. It was a great show and if her coming out would have been timed better, I think the show could have lasted and I think the fact that she has a very popular talk show now proves that not a whole lot of people cared that she was a lesbian, we just didn't understand it.
I laughed at that too when the Big Chick did the whole "welcome to the family" thing.
That was the funniest line ever uttered on the show.

duh, Ellen "coming out", the actual episode was fine, it was what was to entail that ruined the show. Didn't we know that Ellen was gay before? Wasn't the character obviously her? Why did the show have to take that turn to look, I'm gay! I hate when they do that. It happened on Will and Grace, too. The show became just completely about the guys and their being gay. It was always there, ylnow.
